Title: The Lair of the White Worm
Post by: Paul Haney on June 21, 2000, 09:13:21 PM
Yep, this is a different type of film.   Well worth seeing for the change of pace and to see a movie that plays by different rules.  Not great but not bad.  Watch it, enjoy it, then don't tell your friends or they will think  you are one of those type of people that like art films.  (note: this is not a art film. it just seems that way)

Man, oh man, I love that song.  I wish I could buy it.  I have only seen this movie on the Sci-fi channel, where the mentioned scenes with raped and impaled nuns are cut out.  I also don't remember the dream sequences.  However, they did leave in the Strap-On-Of-Death.

Snakes and Ladders is actually the original name of Chutes and Ladders.  In its original British incarnation.  A friend of mine from England actually has a Snakes and Ladders game from when he was a child (FAR pre-dating this film).  Just a nitpicky little commment here.

I found this film wonderfully fun.

Oh boy--Ken Russell finally makes it to Badmovies.org!  I, alas, have not seen this film, but I really look forward to the Good Sgt's reviews of Lisztomania and The Devils!

I'd have to give this one 4 slimes.  Hugh Grant swinging the broadsword and falling into the drumset is pure brilliance. Can't forget the White Worm song, either.  I want the soundtrack.

I would give this half a slime, the movie is really really boring, I hated every minute of it.

Hmmm. "Never get a blowjob from a woman ith two inch fangs." If only Hugh had listened to that before he went to Devine Brown!

KidJustice, if you will go to www.geocities.com/lairof/, you
will find the lyrics to the song, which is called "The D'Ampton Worm." There it says that the song is performed by Emilio Perez Machado and Stephen Powys, but, I have also heard that the song is performed by The Pogues. I do not know where you can find a recording of the song, but I have heard it is used as the background music for the film trailer. If so, that can be found at www.vidnet.com and www.horrordvds.com/downloads/. You need RealPlayer to see the first and DivX to see the second.                       Now, now a criticism, but an observation about our webmaster, who ". . .really didn"t need to watch . . . nuns being raped by Roman soldiers," but, he doesn't say anything about not needing to watch a young boy scout, being seduced,
then emasculated, before being murdered by being drowned in the bath by the villainess. Hmmm! As a boy scout for an year in the 5th grade, this scene and the scene of the death of the four boy scouts in "Cemetery Man," makes me think that he has something against the boy scouts. Anyway, a great site. Who would have thought a marine had a sense of humor, and an eye for picking out the best scene in a film, including the two scenes mentioned, 77% of the time.

There is some debate as to whether Kevin, the goofy boy scout, in this film actually received a blowjob from Lady Sylvia, before she emasculated him. At www.geocities.com/lairof/, the webmaster says no to both the blowjob and the emasculation. (Check the bulletin board at the site listed.) But, everyting is open to debate in this film.

Man, what a flick!  You get to see Amanda Donohu run around near naked..but then she whips out the scariest thing I've ever seen a woman wield in a horror film!

Best enjoyed while drunk.  May cause brain damage.  But still great fun.

I usually don't like Ken Russell's films but this one was quite good, an adaption of Bram Stoker's last novel of the same name.

I thought this was a very good movie. I don't know what it is about Hugh Grant, but even when he's being dead serious you just want to bust out laughing at him. I'm not saying he's a bad actor, which he isn't, he just got a natural funny look to him. Enough about Hugh. Amanda Donahoe looked damn fine, too.

Finally, a Ken Russel film-here!!  I can't see why Russel has garnered such a wide-range of fans, his films are botched pretentious pieces of junk...

Great googly moogly!! What a huge, horrible, waste of time! For the love of Benji, all I ever wanted was a bit of(BUNCH OF) vampire related violence and gore! Too much to ask for Kenny? Hmmmmm? This movie brought me closer than I've ever been to doing harm to myself or my fellow man! Horrid...fetid any other id's you can think of!! Oh yes. By the way, my scouting experience was almost equally painful.

True story--my sister is a Hugh Grant freak.  She called me up all excited because she had found this movie at the video store.  I had seen it previously, thanks to a boyfriend who gravitated towards anything gross and bloody, and I warned her that this was no "Four Weddings And A Funeral."  That did not deter my sister.

The next day, I asked her how she liked it.  She sputtered, "I can't believe Hugh Grant would make a PORNO movie!"

She also thinks that the hooker framed him.

This was a boring movie.  I taped it only because I wanted to watch it with a friend who is a big David Icke fan and see if it could be appreciated on a “British aristocracy are actually reptoids” level.

The setting is relentlessly dismal and bleak and drab.  It essentially qualifies as a small town setting.  The villainess was sexy but completely unlikable.

The film was scored by Polish composer Stanislaw Syrewicz and the score was actually released on CD.

This was a great film.  I like those weird, dark, B-movies.  Hugh Grant was hot, but I've developed a mad crush on all of Scotland!  You can seduce me with your manskirt and bagpipes ANYTIME, Angus!

I saw this shortly after it was released.  I remember being quite impressed with Hugh Grant as he had a sort of Cary Grant air about him.  I was famililar with all the other cast members as well, so found it an enjoyable movie in a twisted sort of way.

What I once questioned, I no longer question. If you look at the expression on Kevin's (Pitt's) face, when Lady Sylvia's (Donohoe's) head disappears below camera range, that is the expression of someone receiving their first oral sex from a woman. What is still questionable, is whether she emasculated him or merely bit him.

I know I have to see this. I actually like Ken Russell, just because he's different. His stuff either works (The Devils, Salome's Last Dance, Altered States, Women in Love) or it doesn't (everything else). But either way it's unique.

I remember renting this many moons ago.  Started off slower than Rosie O'Donnell in concrete shoes.  Next thing you know nuns are being raped with spiked dildos.  Where in the hell did that come from?  Admittingly, that was not the most uncomfortable part of the film for me.  It has to be Amanda Donohoe's hairy armpits.  Sadistic sexual attacks on religious women are one thing but bad female grooming habits is where I draw the line in the sand.

Ken Russell has left the (Big Brother) house, 7/1/07. I can't believe that nobody in the house asked him about his work (even mention this campy little gem). He's a living genius for pete's sake!

The worst bit is when Hugh Grant dreams that he is on a plane, filling out a crossword, and he toys with his (red) pen in such a way as to suggest his arousal by Amanda D. It is crude in both senses of the word.  And why does Mr Russell have to include nuns in EVERYTHING he does? Usually there are nuns being abused, acting blasphemously etc, etc. I remeber reading an interview with him many years ago in which he said that he had a fantasy of filming "a million naked nuns running through the desert". It takes all sorts, I suppose.

Yeah, Amanda Donohoe was pretty good at hypnotizing people. A hitchhkiking boy scout. The local constable. The village virgin. But not the local lord. He must be made of sterner stuff. LOL!

I totally dig this movie! It's so weird that you can't help loving it. It opened in January 1989 (here in Philadelphia) at the same theater that ran "Rocky Horror Picture Show" every Fri and Sat. I missed it at the time but caught it on video in May 1989. Ken Russell is definitely a unique director. Anyone see "Altered States" (1980) or "Crimes Of Passion" (1984)? Check them out.

I've seen "Altered States," but except for clips on youtube.com, I haven't seen "Crimes of Passion." Which one did you see mg247? The edited one or the unedited one? The unedited one is suppose to be better, as it creates more empathy for the heroine.

I have seen some of his other weird and non-weird films. Oh, wait . . . He doesn't make non-weird films, Some of his more weird films I've seen include "Lair of the White Worm," "Salome's Last Dance," "Aria," "Gothic," "Altered States," "Valentino," "Tommy," "The Devils," and "The Music Lovers." Some of his less werd films I've see include "Billion Dollar Brain," "Women in Love," "The Boy Friend," "The Rainbow," "Women and Men: Stories of Seduction," and "Prisoner of Honor."

Did anyone notice, besides myself, that the women in the film have more hair on their legs and under their arms, than the men in the film--Hugh Grant (Lord James D'Ampton), Lloyd Peters (Jesus Christ), and Chris Pitt (Kevin)--have on their chests? What's up with that.

That sword used in the film is called a Zweihander or two-handed sword, because it requires two hands to use it. If you want to practice with one, before you have to use it, so you don't look like a doofus like Hugh Grant in the film, there are websites, where you can purchase replicas of the sword. The actual sword itself was as long as six feet, but the longest replica I've seen for sale on the internet, is somewhat less than that.

Seriously love this movie.  It was the first real horror I'd ever seen and been able to make it through without constantly looking over my should in broad daylight.

Amanda Donohoe is brilliantly cast and I feel sorry for the kid in the hot tub!

Yeah, but didn't the kid have a great time till she bit him and then drowned him in the tub.

A couple of things about that scene. The actor who played the kid was named Chris Pitt, and, he was apparently only 17, when he did that scene with Amanda Donohoe? Does anybody know what happened to him, as he dropped out of acting about a couple of years after he appeared in the film, and I haven't been able to trace him. Since I wanted to ask him how it was to appear in that scene, as some actresses don't like to work with an actor that young, but Donohoe apparently didn't have any problems appearing in the scene with him.

And that tub, while it is often refered to as a hot tub, I think it is more likely what is known as a sunken bathtub, as the tub is sunk beneath the level of the floor, which is probably why you don't see them that much anymore. And if you want to see another great scene taking place in a sunken bathtub, then watch Claudette Colbert bathing in asses milk in one in "The Sign of the Cross" from 1932.

Saw this movie on the "on-demand" one night.  Nice full version with no editing out of the nasty parts.   Right as the girl touches the LSD/toxin on the crucifix and the movie dumps into one of the most bizarre/blasphemous sequences I have ever seen, my wife comes downstairs.  She had no clue what I was watching and just started yelling "turn it off!" I eventually got it off, but started it up after she left.  Some people just can't appreciate bad cinema.  I agree the song was the best part of the movie though and also seeing Hugh Grant in a movie which actually has a body-count to it rather than a romantic comedy was novel.

Similiar scenes
Both scenes being on youtube.com
Different films
1 works: "Lair of the White Worm"
1 does not: "Razor Blade Smile"
As to the why . . . ?

The writing
The sets
The music
The lighting
The directing
The costumes (a boy scout uniform is a nice touch, as is a female fetish outfit)
The cinematography
The acting

The characters
--their sex appeal
--their occupations (one being a boy scout)
--their experience or lack thereof (one being a virgin)
--their age (one being underage and the boldness of that)

The actors'
--physical appearance (one homely. one not)
--age (one being in his teens and the boldness of that)

The first named film being superior in all cases (IMHO.)

If you are interested in one of the following philias, . . .

aquaphilia
water

assassinophilia
murder of a defenseless male

biastophilia
assault on a defenseless male

ecdysiaphilia
provacatively entertaining in an erotic costume

emasculaphilia
belittling a weaker male

fumephilia
smoking

hypephilia
clothing in shiny fabrics

leatherphilia
wearing leather

narratophilia
talking in a sexually provocative manner

predatorphilia
preying on a male to sexually ravage him

sadistophilia
sadistically abusing a lesser male

voraphilia
being eaten alive

and paedophilia
sexual interest in a child. Though, because of the victim's age in the film, which we can presume was 15, it's actually more specifically ephebophilia, or an sexual interest in a male between 15 and 18. Paedophilia specifically being interested in a child under 11. And hebephilia being sexually interested in a child between 11 and 14.

. . . then you might be interested in seeing this film.
