Title: Infra-Man
Post by: Jorge on November 25, 2006, 04:10:12 PM
I was 6/7 years old when I saw this movie. I remember having become flaberghasted and it stayed for a long time "as the movie of my life". It opened my horizons and my interest to the science fiction scene and only now, after 25 years I have come close to it. It is funny to verify that this movie seems to have influenced several people in the same way.
It is a must to see it again.

I saw "Infra-man" recently with a friend, and I must say THIS IS THE GREATEST SCI-FI MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN!!!! The non-stop action and hilariuos sound fx / costumes make it a MUST-SEE FILM!!!

Saw this movie when I was in second grade - thought it was great.  Saw it again when 21 yrs - thought the only redeamable thing to it was She-Demon.  If your in to Kung-Fu, Big/Wierd Monsters and Really Wierd Outfits (I don't think anyone in the movie dressed normally) you might survive (not enjoy) sitting through this entire movie.  Otherwise, don't count on it filling up 1.5 hrs.

This was the first real movie I took my kid brother to see, he was about 10 or so then. It must have made quite an impression on him as when Halloween rolled around he desperately wanted to be Infra-Man which was at the start frustrating as no Ben Cooper type costume was availible. Using a bit of ingenuity (and a roll of duct tape) my brother soon was a reasonible facsimile of Infra-Man, his pantlegs now resembled those shiny silver boots, upon a red sweatshirt was now a flashy mylar emblem to match the chromed 'Zorro' mask standing in for Infra-Man's incredible headgear. I even managed to spray paint an wide vinyl belt and affix a silver cardboard buckle to complete our version of this heroic garb.  My brother loved it, one of my favorite photos of him as a child is his posing as the kung fu super powered masked mystery man, ready to save Earth (or at least our neighborhood) from those wicked monsters.

I saw this movie when I was a kid..not too sure when though. All I remember is that I was still in the early years of elementary school. I just loved it! But I guess it's the kinda movie only a kid could actually enjoy. It's just weird that Infra-Man came to mind all of a sudden and I looked it up in a search engine..and now here I am. I'm actually thinking about going over to Blockbuster Video and renting it again. I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much as I did when I was a kid, but oh well, for old times sake. Anyway, I wouldn't really recommend this movie for ages 15&up..most likely because they'd think it's stupid and weird. But I think the majority of kids would still like to see this movie even in this day in age.

Roger Ebert called this film one of his guilty pleasures. I agree. As a Children's Pastor, I can safely say that kids would definatly love this movie. If you like kung fu action and goofy sci-fi (ie Power Rangers) you'll enjoy this movie. this movie was a rip off of Ultraman but hey at least it's a good rip off. one of the three ansesteral movies to the Power rangers

This is probably the greatest sci-fi movie ever made. i love the sound infra-man makes when he leaps; it's like a mini guitar solo. also did anyone else find the 'laser horn monster' and his dancing unbelievably hilarious?

Is there a single b-movie fan out there who doesn't have fond childhood memories of this movie?  How the hell can you NOT love Inframan?

I saw this Gem at a 24 hour Sci-fi movie marathon in the early 90's. Its crammed full of Kung fu action with a kickass Hero, crap acting and ill fitting monster outfits. So let me ask you, what else is needed in such a B-grade classic? A great time to be had by all and is my fave in this film genre. Inframan Rocks!!

I had forgotten all about this movie.  I must have seen it 5 or 6 times in the movie theater in OK when it came out in 1975 (I was 5).  I think my cousins and I saw every weekend.  My uncle would leave and go to a bar..HeHe.  I think I just might buy it for my kids.  I am pretty sure this is the movie that shaped my world view of science.  Any thing is possible...even a thunderballt fist.  I hope it doesn't suck when I see it again.

Just to clarify things, ULTRAMAN is not the sole basis for SUPER INFRAMAN, but mainly KAMEN (MASKED) RIDER.  KAMEN RIDER, created by manga cartoonist Shoutarou Ishinomori in 1971, was the one that gave birth to the posing, morphing superheroes that flourished throughout the 70s to this day, with HUNDREDS of imitations!  So SUPER INFRAMAN didn't "inspire" the POWER RANGERS (which were not even American, either; They are based on another KAMEN RIDER offshoot, the Sentai Series, which started in 1975).  I'm afraid Americans have WAY too much to learn about Japanese superheroes and their influence.

However, I WILL agree that SUPER INFRAMAN kicks ass!  And, in many ways, surpasses its inspirations.  Probably the best Asian superhero film, bar-none.

Even thought the SPFX are worst than those in TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA (which was released in Japan at the same time this one was released in Hong Kong), this Ultraman/Kamen Rider rip off is better than the last classic G-flick (and better than GODZILLA 1985, for that matter).
INFRAMAN (who looks like Ultraman's gay cousin) was a lot more fun than the above mentioned 'serious' G-flicks (see my comments for TERROR OF MG...if you dare), especially after smokeing something illegal.

This movie is amazing. I remeber the USA network playing this one along with some great Kung Fu and Gamera flicks.

If anyone's looking for a widescreen subtitled copy drop me a line, I can point you in the right direction.

Infra-Man a.k.a. Chinese Superman was supposed to be the Shaw Brothers answer to the Ultra-Man series.  Shot in Shawscope (panavision) and using the unique interior sets
located on the Shaw Studios warehouses, Infra-man was filmed.  Danny Lee (The Killer) was a rising star within the Shaw Brothers studio system.  Along with Mighty Peking Man, these films were going to make him an international superstar (that did not come until fifteen years later).  The story is about scientist awaking a dormant alien spacecraft.
The Space Dragon Queen and her skelton army come from the fourth dimension to claim the space craft and enslave humanity.  Her alien friends also want to dine on the non-human slaves as well.

A scientist is working on a body armor that'll turn anyone into a super strong human with great powers.  Danny Lee is chosen to wear the army because he's such a bad dude with remarkable fighting skills.  Can he save earth from these bizarre aliens?

Another one of those fun fantasy movies where all the actors seem to be having fun.  The vibrant technicolor that the Shaw Brothers like using is utilize to it's fullest.  This movie has to be seen in shawscope because the director uses every square of frame.  The kinectic action scenes were directed by the co-action director of Way of the Dragon (a.k.a. Return of the Dragon). I love Shaw brothers movies and they've finally been digitally remasted and in mandarin (with english subs). I advise you to seek it out.  You wont regret it.  Finally Infra-Man is availible uncut!!

I love this movie!

I think my favorite scene is when they "brainwash" the scientist and say"Now you will swear that you belong to the princess." and then the brainwashed scientist says"I swear I will do what ever she says."... uhh Mr Scientist thats NOT what they asked.

Probably the single most influential piece of terrible cinema to affect my young life.

It is the craziest, off the wall, technicolor, shadowramma, son of funkenstein piece of madness EVER.

period.

I defy anyone to challenge the simultaneous greatness and horror that is "The Super Inframan"!!!

and btw:  why is he excited about getting "Thunderbolt fists"?  He doesn't even know what they are...greedy little...

i agree, the DVD is really well done.  too bad Brenner seems to have become a bit mental about the movie, and they couldn't use any of the US trailers or promotional material.  still, it's just an awesome movie.

Most of the standard information concerning the villains of 'Infra-Man' comes from the original Goodtimes Home Video VHS, and is somewhat misleading. The Goodtimes copy apparently padded out the original opening credits with brief film-snippets of the various "Sci-Fi Monsters" as they designated them. Princess Dragon Mom is designated "Wicked Dragon Mom" in these added credits, and her reptilian alter-ego is separately designated as the "Giant Flying Lizard" (although in the film, it is obvious this "Flying Lizard" is simply the Princess in her "battle form"). Except for She-Demon and Nemesis, none of the mutants are referred to by name in the movie -- Nemesis, by the way, being the actual name for "The Driller Beast". She-Demon is not even listed among the adversaries in the Goodtimes added credits, although she clearly is a monster, too. "The Octopus Mutant" is actually a MONSTROUS PLANT, not some cephalopod; why else would he become an enormous VINE when he plants himself? And the "Giant Beetle Monster" is actually a SPIDER; not only does he have web-designs all over him, but he even envelopes some of the good guys in globs of webbing.

Stiill ... 'Infra-Man' still ROCKS.

And one more thing: because 'The Six Million Dollar Man' and 'The Bionic Woman' were big hits on television during the film's initial release, 'Infra-Man' was originally billed as -- THE MAN BEYOND BIONICS!

Well, sort of ...

Just to let you all know...I saw this movie in the theatre when it came out. I'm sure it was a sunny, summer Saturday afternoon. And after the show and for a week later I was Infra-Man Kung-Fu kicking my friends at school and giving them a dose of my Thunderbolt Fists.
I have always thought of this movie from time to time over the years. I plan to get a copy so I can show it to my son. Thanks for the memory.

I wrote the review and caught the clip many years ago.  The movie was on VHS, and it was an original (not a copy), but I remember the quality was poor.  There is a DVD available now that has very good sound and picture quality, so don't let that deter you.  This film is a whole lot of silly kung-fu and monsters action fun.

The Shaw Brothers did their take on Japanese monster bashers. The film comes off as a demented Power Rangers episode (and looks much like one) and is an absolutely stinker (I mean that in a good way).  If you're looking for one of those movies that you just can't shut off (for curiosity of seeing where it goes or how it ends) this is your ticket.  :bouncegiggle:

Li Hsu Hsien is Inframan  (if I recall) and he had become a star in his own right when he played alongside Betty Ting Pei in Bruce Lee: His Last Days, His Last Nights.  Betty was the real-life actress who was with the rea; Bruce Lee the night he died, and took a big chance starring in this movie.

actually, he didn't take a risk at all.  the Shaws were still in their "studio system" mode, so he made the movies they told him to make.  Bruce Lee... was made after Infra-man, as well.

Actually I was referring to Betty Ting Pei, being she was the actual woman that was with Bruce Lee the night he died. There was a serious backlash against her as "the woman that killed Bruce Lee" and for her to actually star in a film about that actual night in question was a very risky and bold move for her. She had a lot to face down.

I saw this movie as a little kid, and I just watched it last night.  I must say that this movie is a THING OF BEAUTY !!!
We need to design a drinking game for this movie:

1. Drink whenever a montage of clips of InfraMan doing a single thing (IE when he first sits up as InfraMan, they show him sitting up about 4-5 times in a span of about 3 seconds).

2. Drink whenever there's an explosion.

Anyone have any other drinking game ideas for this movie ?  :teddyr:

This movie has two really awesome stand-out scenes for me.  The first is when the scientist who looks like Col. Sanders is captured and being transported by monsters to Mount Demon (that was called Mount Devil earlier in the film).  You can clearly see that Col. Sanders is the one driving the boat with the two monsters sitting on each side of him.  Add in the somewhat inappropriate for the scene music and It looks more like they're heading out on a really silly fishing trip together. I can't tell you how many times my friend and I had to go back and watch that scene over and over again.

The other part I love is when Infra-Man finds himself frozen by Princess Dragon Mom's freeze ray or whatever it was.  As the monsters are carrying him off, the head of Japanese Col. Sanders slowly fades in like a ghost and says "Remember !  If you ever get frozen by liquid ice, you may use five of your rockets to thaw out !" as if it were some kind of flashback.  The funny thing is.... Col. Sanders NEVER IN THE ENTIRE MOVIE told him that !  Hehehe !

The next thing that me and my friends found hilarious were the doors in the Space Force headquarters.  Instead of opting for doors where you could just turn a knob and open them, they opted for the fancy kind where you walk up to them and they slide upward making a "WHUUUUUUM" sound.  The funny thing is that the doors all open REALLY REALLY slow so it takes a minute or so of waiting before they can get into whatever room they're going into.

The other thing we loved was the Space Force's incredible SECURITY !!  When Tu-Ming comes back all mind controlled, Col. Sanders says "Keep a good eye on him." and then in the next scene, we see him walking around... alone... with enough time and supervision to be able to overpower a guard, wait for the lab door to slowly open, steal the plans for Infra-Man, and escape.
The same security issues occur when one of the monsters tunnels into the Space Force headquarters through a cave to plant a bomb.  Once the monster runs off and Infra-Man saves the day, we get treated to a scene where Col. Sanders' daughter is sitting in a room in the headquarters when a monster comes busting through the door, grabs her AND ESCAPES !!!  Now I don't think the monster came in through the front door.  Did they even THINK of guarding that cave that now leads into their basement ????
This movie is a hoot !  I never grow tired of watching it !!!

If we did a drinking game of those two criteria, we be dead drunk by half way through! :teddyr:

I'll add another criteria: take a shot when Infra-Man kicks some bad guys asses! :teddyr:
we'd be then triple times dead drunk :bouncegiggle:
