Title: Cherry 2000
Post by: Steve Bentley on November 25, 2006, 04:09:49 PM
I passed up buying this one just the other day because of Melanie Griffith, but I may go pick it back up.  It doesn't sound good, but...hey, this isn't goodmovies.org anyway, is it?

I used to watch this movie all the time as a little girl (pre kindergarten).  Maybe that's what is wrong with me.

Dude, your missing out. Excellent rainy Sunday afternoon, family out of town, curled up with the blanket and a beer, watching a B-MOVIE experience!!! A movie from a simpler time.

Purchased it on DVD a few months ago. Worth every "B" penny

Memorable for the fact that it comes from the preiod when you could say Melanie Griffith was cute, and people would agree with you, (as opposed to laugh and spit and kick you), this film really needed an injection of gratuitous nudity - it's not as though Melanie wasn't doing nudity! christ, I've seen her norks hundreds of times.....she must have had a bad boob job, as it was POST boob job that she stopped flashing her norks, damn sloppy surgeons and their scars!!! But as I was saying, all the classic films of this genre HAVE NUDITY.....but not this one....gratuitous that is...

For the record, I love this movie. It's got loads of guns [I am to guns like gearheads are to cars], a sex robot, yuppie cultists and Melanie Griffith before she married Bandaris and turned skaggy.Sure, her voice sounds like she gargled with napalm and powdered glass, but I'm a freak for the gun girls[I love you Ripley].
I watch this flick every time it comes on T.V and so should you.

I thought Cherry was one hot babe... I'd like to know who she was as well. I remember she had sexy moles in her back, I find that very erotic..

I saw this film when it was first exhibited back in the 80's.  It was filmed in 3-D so that might have something to do with the 'red-eye' and the other odd visuals in the flick.

Back then, we were called "true fans" and not "stalkers". I still want one. Never met a wummin who liked this movie. Don't know any guys who don't love this movie. Watch it every time it's on the tv. Yup.

Who played the robot? I thought that there was a story there... can't remember what it was... something about it being her only movie and she either was a porn star before or after and died not long after the film? Anyone remember?

An AWSOME film. INSPIRING. This is truly art. I can't open the dvd case any more though, it's stuck. Stuck tight. Stuck sticky. I love this film. No really, I do. I love it.
I love because I no longer have to accept that the film industry expects you to produce great films to have a career. I can watch this film, drink heavily and foget that I have missed every opportunity that has come my way to create cinema. I am old now. I wish I was dead.

This is and always will be a great film.

Did you know it was a cult hit in New Zealand? It ran for ages.

A movie you love to hate. The astoundingly gross lack of any redeeming value is why I watch this every time it's on.

BTW, the actress who played Cherry is Pam Gidley. You can find out about her at imdb:

I get a bad feeling when I remember this movie.  It’s bad on so many levels.

First of all, I saw it in 1991 with my then-friend Peter.  He was a devout Christian, bodybuilder, and master of cars, single-handedly restoring a 1967 Mustang from total junk to mint condition at the time.  That Mustang of his was actually the reason he chose the movie--based on the Mustang appearing prominently on the cover.  I agreed because it looked like a science fiction movie.

About a third of the way through he realized what a B-movie it was and refused to finish watching it, returning it to the video store then and there instead.

On top of that, he and I aren’t friends anymore.  In 1996, I accidentally called his house at six in the morning because I had been sleeping weird hours and when woke up I thought it was six in the evening.  He hasn’t spoken to me since, except at our high school reunion, where he talked to me a little while glaring at me judgmentally.

In addition to that, the movie was horrible.  In spite of having a cool car and cool chick and a future with sexy robots, it manages to break two of my rules by being set in a post-apocalyptic future *and* by taking place mostly in the desert.  This is one of movies that led to those rules being put in place, in fact.  It also made me hate Tim Thomerson, and I didn’t get over that until I saw him in Trancers and a guest spot on 21 Jump Street as a crew-cut substitute principal who goes a little to far in enforcing discipline.  Cherry 3000, you evil movie--no one should be made to hate Tim Thomerson!  He was the only good thing in the Nemesis movies!

I still have yet to see the last half of this movie.  It traumatized me that badly.  I may very well go the rest of my life without finishing this movie.

Helmuut has it right. A simpler time! Now we have to deal with
millions of illegal Aliens brazenly demanding our money and that we change our laws as if they are entitled to it. But enough of that. Felicity is missing out. B-Sci Fi movies are great! Cherry 2000 is one of the best of the Bs! I love this movie. Yuppie dude comes of age, guns, explosions, Hoover Dam, sex robots, guns, killer Yuppies as the main antagonists, (Come on now! Surely that's a new one on all of you!) twister, reverting to their animal natures, a calvary charge of four wheelers, toaster ovens, (Lots of them!) donkeys, and guns.
What's not to like? Just watch and enjoy. Don't take them that seriously.

John

One of my all time favorite flicks next to Repulsion, Star Wars and 2001: A Space Odyssey - even though it has a minor flaw or two - **ha, ha**.

The first second i saw the movie back in the 80's i knew exactly why he developed such an attachment to the screwbot. mainly because women don't know how to shut up and do what i tell you to do kind of love these days. I keep checking every month hoping before the year 2050 in anticipation for this kind of perfection.

xoxo to my future screwbot companion.

You just have to know how to keep them in line is all.

I must have watched this movie about 10 times back in the '80s.  It goes well with a nice bowl of weed  :teddyr:  Watched it again recently, it's still fairly entertaining.  Definitely gets slow in a few spots though.

O.K. so was it me or do you think that Sam's ex-girlfriend Ginger was a robot? I mean they never really said that she was a robot, but she was acting very weird. She was Lester's girlfriend and she didn't bat an eye when Lester killed people. And at the end of the movie when Lester was killed she made a silly comment about no peanutbutter sandwich for him. And considering that she is Sam's ex-girlfriend and Sam preferred robots, it only makes sense that she is a robot too. I was just wondering if anyone else thought that too.

Did David Lynch & Quentin Tarantino secretly collaborate on this ?
It really looks like it. They really should've gotten an Asian, Asian - American, Hawaiian or someone equally exotic to play " Cherry " because the Japanese & other people in E. Asia are really robot - crazy, so I've observed.

One other MINOR, MINOR quibble I have with the movie:
They do an extreme close - up of her applying lipstick, & she needed either electrolysis or lip wax. Completely shreds the illusion, burns it, & stomps on the ashes. I know, picky, picky, picky.....

& the last movie Pam G. was in was a Disney flick, " Little Vampires " about a family whose son befriends vampire tykes somewhere in Europe. She was a human. I think it was a straight to cable thing.
& BTW, I think Pamela Gidley looks like Margot Kidder's long - lost kid sister, but that's just me....

If they ever do a remake (and it's about ready for a remake), I want Gary Busey to play Leroy.

Did anyone else think that Melanie Griffith looked like Leeloo from "The Fifth Element" in this movie? When she handed back Cherry's control-chip-CPU-thingie, I caught myself spouting out, "Kor-ben Dal-las. Mul-ti Pass." lol.
