Title: Spookies
Post by: Blake the "Mad Chemist" on October 31, 2002, 12:13:27 AM
I remember seeing this one of the USA cable network on Saturday morning.  It was rather confusing trying to figure out what was going on with the plot.  Guess the producers were trying to make a Ghoulies/Evil Dead ripoff (with zombies thrown in for good measure) and they wound up with neither...

Found this flick for a buck.  Upon watching it, I realized that that is all one SHOULD pay to see this movie (if anything at all.)  Not the worst movie I've seen, at least (though definitely my least favorite in my collection.)

The spookies, a review I was definitely waiting for. This movie I will describe as quite random and somehow it never made sense. The only thing I do know is its monster puppet 80's hell with a cat man-thats all thats important. Maybe the FX makeup and sound people had too much fun and maybe the actors hated the whole thing but it still stands as a testament of random inana film making at its finest. The cat man was definitely a big inspiration to me. "that cat's something I can't explain."

The film is actually 2 different films intercut. You will notice that the kids in the car never meet face to face the socerer or anyone the socerer ever talks to. I wonder what the original film(s) looked like. There were rumors about a film called "Twisted Souls" which got some coverage in fan mags, and the name appears on the end of the film. My guess is, from my memory of the magazine, that the kids in the car, the ouija board etc, are parts of the original Twisted Souls and the garbage with the sorcerer and his dead wife are a different (much worse)film, which for reasons I don't understand, feels suspiciously like a badly made porn flick.

Hey! I'm the actor that played Rich! (That took balls to admit) "Spookies" was originally titled "Twisted Souls" and was actually a very good horror movie. But the idiot producer from England wanted it to be more than it was (or less) and because he disliked the directors, re-shot footage using a porno movie director to add crappy sorceror scenes. That's why it doesn't make sense. The Muck Men became FARTING Muck Men and the nonsense with the boy being chased and buried alive almost shut down the film because it was reported that the new film crew was abusing it's child star. The exploding Grim Reaper was done by strapping two cans of WD-40 to a blockbuster (M80) and filming it in slow motion. If you look closely you can see the aerosol can top go spinning right past the camera!
Makeup man GABE BARTALOS has written and directed a horror opus entitled SKINNED DEEP that I have a great scene in, so do a Google search or go to http://www.artexposure.com/images/framesskinned%20deep.htm and dig the next generation of independent horror movie directors. Peace, Horror Fans!

Another car boot trip, another handful of video nasties. Spookies being one of them. I desperately wanted to like this film, (the UK version has great cover art) and again it was one of those films from my childhood that I always saw the older guys renting. But unfortunately no amount of nostalgia was enough to mask the fact that this is quite a shabby way to spend 90 mins. The creatures are great, but as mentioned before the whole thing seems so disjointed. I was interested to read that this was cutr with footage from another movie, I would love to have seen the original "Twisted Souls". Keep watching those turkeys bad movie fans.

Silly movie, but I liked it enough to buy a vhs copy a few years ago. I really bought it for the Richard Corben art on the box!

I have watched this movie sence I was a kid. I really think as horror fans you should watch this again. It was f**king awsome. It had every single horror creature or monster in it, and I think that's what they were going for. Not only that but it was obviously a comedy. It was ment to be silly, even if everyone dies in the end.
P.S. the spider lady kicked ass!!!

Hi Peter!
Hi all!
I was the art director and made several of the really nice props in "Twisted Souls" (which is what it was called when I worked on it).
I made the OUIJA Board - my most beautiful prop to date. Making Twisted was a great, fantastic and intense experience that I will never forget!

It's too bad you folks will never get to see what the film should have looked like. If you like it now, it was 100x better in it's original form. I was there. I know!

Many of the people who worked on this film went on to wonderful careers. Gabe has done all kinds of special makeup effects in LA - including his own film, as Peter mentioned. (I always knew Gabe was incredibly talented).
As for me I've done special effects and worked on projects that got Emmy's. (For Special Effects).
Anyway, thanks for the memories and kind words!

Hey Pete !
I played the character of Dave in "Twisted Souls " .That was when the film made sense .I was the nerd with the sinus condition that was explained in the first car scene but cut out of the finished picture .So I just sound stuffed up for the whole film . We had a great time and we all took it quite seriously .We lived on Bachman's popcorn and danish form Cassone's bakery .

Oh, I remember this stink fest when USA Network ran ultra crummy flicks on Saturday evening. This movie seemed like three or four stuffed into one box and should have been mocked on MST3k! For some reason I really liked Adrienne, she was a bit of b***h but quite sexy in her own way!!   :teddyr:
The only thing that could have made her scene even better would have been to have her striped down to her undies and high heels in an attempt to seduce her hubby only to find out she's next on the monster's menu! Hey, erotic peril makes crappy monster movies worth watching!

To the lovely Adrienne, I raise a toast to ya  I was gunning for ya but it seems nasty critters and bad writting got you in the end!! Miss ya!!  :drink:

First off, what the hell is "Duke" wearing? I am watching this pile of cinematic adventure now and I am absolutely confused, as stated.
One thing I have learned, Spookies know how to set up for a party. I'll book the palce.

orator of long soliloquies - had me laughing at least for 5 and a half minutes.
and not sure if anyone caught this, but Duke seemed to keep his head as his lifeless body was tossed as so much common furniture about the room.

i'm so glad i finally got the need to see this out of my system. absolutely terrible. yet funny as hell.
