Title: Guide For Submitting Reader Reviews
Post by: Andrew on November 30, 2006, 02:21:23 AM
The short version:  Reviews submitted for inclusion into the Reader Reviews section should be posted to this board or emailed to Andrew (http://www.badmovies.org/contact.html).

In addition to posting links to reviews on other websites, this is the place to post your own reviews of bad movies.  Every so often (monthly), I will look through this board for a well-written review.  If I have access to the movie, I will create all the sounds/images/and video for the article.  This forum is the proving grounds, where your review will be seen by other readers and you can work out any proofreading or final touches.

Posting your review here gives me no rights or ownership, except to publish the review on the website.  However, the review is still yours.  If you later want the review removed, I will do so.

In order to assist anyone who wants to write a Badmovies.org style review, I have posted the code for a skeleton template below.  It is the basics for writing a post here that will follow the format that I use.

Code:

[color=yellow]NAME OF THE FILM
Rated: MPAA RATING
X slimes
Copyright Company and Date:
Submitted by YOUR NAME[/color]

[color=yellow]THE CHARACTERS[/color]

Justin - Just a fictional fellow.  He likes to play the piano while his boat floats down the Amazon.  Squeezed to death and eaten.

[color=yellow]LESSONS LEARNED[/color]

Fish can be used as boomerangs.
There is nothing wrong with talking to chickens.

[color=yellow]STUFF TO WATCH FOR[/color]
4 mins - Look out Mr. President!
43 mins - And just where do you think you are going?

[color=yellow]NOTABLE QUOTES[/color]

Some guy: "Yeah, I ate a chicken."
Other some guy: "The whole thing?"
Some guy: "Yeah."

[color=yellow]THE PLOT[/color]

DELETE AND WRITE YOUR PLOT HERE.

Dang, if only I could find how to post music/video clips/take screenshots I'd bring Return to Horror High onto the board!

Josh Forbes (Or, I dunno, hero kid): Kastleman! You honky, (WTF??) There never was an Amos! (Sound incredibly like "Anus" in this instance :teddyr: )

there should be a screen cap button on your dvd player (on your computer) it depends though but if it does, you just have to set a destination for the picture files( a folder on the desktop will do) and press the button when you want to capture a frame.

What if we can get the clips and screenshots ourselves? Do we send them to you to put them on the review, or is there a way to do it alone?

You can create the files if you wish.  The thing I ask is that people who do so look through how I create the files.  For images, I create 6-8 of them, with a max size of 800 by 600 pixels and the edges cropped.  For sound clips, create 4-6 and I use 11 KHz, 16 bit, Mono and keep the length to short clips.  The video file is 352 by 240 (or smaller for the vert) and about 30 seconds long (no more than 880 mbit/sec) and the edges cropped.  With all that, I also need a 150 by 113 (or smaller for the vert) preview for the image clip.

I have a fair video editing system available that I use and doing all of these are second nature.

There is not an automated way for someone to upload files to the Badmovies.org server, so they should be emailed to me or uploaded somewhere I can download them (remembering that making too large of an email will cause my server to bounce the email).

Do we use the attatched template to write the reviews? :question:

Do we use the attatched template to write the reviews? :question:

It's not mandatory.  I just made it in case someone wanted to write a Badmovies.org style review.  It just provides a skeleton framework.

So do we just delete your names and stuff and type it in and it will come out normal?

Not entirely.  You copy from the template and paste into a new post, changing what you need after doing so.  What you get is a forum posted review that follows the format of a Badmovies.org one.

Question for Andrew: I mean to do a full scale badmovies.org review.  The movie I'm thinking of reviewing is THEY SAVED HITLER'S BRAIN.  Because it's kind of a "classic", though, I'm worried you might want to do it yourself someday.

In general, would it be a good idea to ask about the movie we hope to review to see if you already have plans for it?

Karma!  I didn't even think on that one.

Yes, certainly if you are worried I might be working on a review.  I've actually put off my own reviews at times when somebody submitted a reader review, and also put a reader review on hold when I was posting my own.

I do mean to eventually review "They Saved Hitler's Brain," but it's not even on my review horizon, so please feel free.  If anything, I think you're jumping in front of the bullet for me.  That movie is boring.  Hellishly boring.

I plan on doing a review of the most bizzare treatment of the Jekyll and Hyde story, Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde.  I even made a montage of the Tim Daly-Sean Young male to female transformation scenes that is on my Daily Motion page (it's been watched more than 1000 times!).  Can I post the link on here with my review?  I'm still writing the review itself, but I figured, as a new member, I should ask.

Sure thing.  If it's flash, you cannot embed it, but you can still link to it.

I believe it is in fact embeddable, as I've embedded it elsewhere.

Thank you!

Return to Horror High is among the top 10 all time IMO. I'll never forget when my buddy bought it from Walmart for $2, and we had about 10 of us watching on a Friday night....we put in the DVD.....and BAM!!! Laughter burst forth from all of us, 2 of my friends tumbled off the couch barely able to breathe....on the TV screen was just a giant play button icon...and under it...the text... "Strat Movie", that's right "Strat Movie". That alone was worth our $2, and from there it just got better with George Clooney getting killed off in 5 lines or less and the teamsters..."trying to make this movie good is like trying to polish a turd". Classic, purely classic.

I have about 800 odd boxed sets/$2-$7 DVD's I bought from walmart and the dollar stores around here from 2000-2007. I'll start posting some reviews soon as I have desperately been looking for others who share my twisted interest in terrible, terrible movies.

Howdy!
I have a review I'm working on I'd like to submit, for an early '70s Spanish horror flick titled "Blue Eyes Of The Broken Doll".  Just curious if you'd seen or heard of it, and just to be certain that you're cool with me posting it here; the review is just in the works, currently.  But I should have it ready in a few days or so.

Love the site, and all the snide comments that these movies so richly deserve.

Thanks,
"Retro" Russell Shiley

I had not hear of it before, but that wouldn't be any reason to disagree with a review being posted.  The only guideline for a review is that it should follow normal forum rules.  Is there any special concern about the film or review?

No, other than the fact that it's completetly inane.  Which makes it right at home here, doesn't it?

Cool.. I'll post the info for it here, then.  I don't have much experience in reviewing, so wish me luck!

Actually, I'll just email you the .txt file; that's easier.  I'll see if I can't capture some audio/video/snaps later for the multimedia sections.

Thank you sir!

Andrew,

You said if an e-mail is too big, it will bounce back.  I'm working on a review of Curse of the Cannibal Confederates, and am pulling the video, pic, & audio files.  Should I send them in separate e-mails when they're ready then, or is it okay to do all in one?

I can receive fairly large emails.  Try sending them to me in one, and let's see if it works.

I'm considering doing a review of The Cop in Blue Jeans (1976)? After watching it, I think it deserves one here. Any plans for that one?

Not by me, and nobody has mentioned it in passing.  Reading about it on the IMDb, it sounds like a real grindhouse film - lots of action scenes loosely cobbled together, characters who are almost two-dimensional, and so on.

Hi, would i be remiss if i paraded a review of The Flying Saucer past people? Or would the dullness overwhelm? Would this be the place to uh, bludgeon it? Thanks.

 Two things, for one I just saw what I now regard as one of the greatest movies ever because I had not seen it since I was a kid, the movie was " The Hypnotic Eye" (1960) starring Jacques Bergerac, Merry Anders, Allison Hayes, and of course as a kid, I didn't realize how stupid funny and great it really was either. I am very surprised it is not already on here somewhere unless it is and it's not under H or has another title maybe, anyone know of it on here?

 My second question is, if we use the format that you have, do you really want/ need us to do it in yellow like that?  :question:

I do not believe that we have ever seen a review of it here, and I cannot recall the name from my experience.  You do have me interested in it, and I see it is available via the Warner Archive collection.

You don't need to worry about the various colors if you use the format here.

Are TV episode reviews acceptable, or is it mandatory that I do movies? I honestly don't mind which one, but just so I don't get confused and submit a TV episode review without acknowledging that it may not be accepted.

Introduction/question:

I co-host a Parsec-Award-nominated and five-star-iTunes-rated podcast (I won't post the name of it yet, because I'm trying not to break any forum rules here as a first-time poster) dedicated to reviewing the worst movies of all time.  Basically, we cover a different terrible movie each month, scene-by-scene from beginning to end.  And we have a wiki dedicated to chronicling all the movies we have reviewed, all the notable characters in said movies, our own tropes we have come up with that you typically see in awful movies, and much more hilarity.  We are about to record our 52nd episode this month.

Am I allowed to link the wiki on here?  I think this community would really enjoy the content.

I believe you need 10 posts before you can add links. Just make 9 more non-spammy posts and you'll be good to go.
