Title: I've got a FEVER. And the only PRESCRIPTION
Post by: Zapranoth on December 04, 2006, 02:35:06 AM
is more COWBELL!

Ever since that damnably funny Walken sketch, I've noticed cowbells in music (whereas before, I didn't ever notice them).   Now, I notice the damned things all over pop music.  Arrrgh.  So, name the most egregious cowbelling in pop music you can think of.   I'll lead the way:

"Beds are burning" by Midnight Oil has a really extra-special obtrustive cowbell in it.

"The time has come   ponk! ponk! ponk! ponk! ponk!
to say fair's fair!  ponk!! ponk!! ponk!! ponk!! ponk!!
to pay our rent   PONK PONK PONK PONK PONK
 to pay our share!"

Something I've been noticing a lot of over the past few months, is that with these fancy new digital recordings, I keep hearing that annoying shriek made by guitarists running their fingers over the frets.

Am I the only one who, upon hearing that sound,  imagines that their fingers are being sliced open and blood is pouring all over the frets?

Laaaaa (ponk ponk) la laaaaa laaaaa (ponk) la (ponk ponk ponk ponk)

Seasons don't fear the Reaper....

Explore the space!

I don't mind the finger sliding sound.  Like in, for example, Sheryl Crow's "Hole in My Pocket."  After she sings "and I'll prove to you it's square," you get a really prominent sound.   I don't play guitar at all but I figure it can't hurt them that bad if they do it.

The breathing noises in the Steve Miller Band's "Jet Airliner," though, is obtrusive and I do notice it.  (The microphone was too close, sounds like.  So you get "Leavin' home (breath) out on the road (breath)      I've been down before!")

But hey, it's about COWBELL here, dammit!   COWBELL!   COWBELL!   NEEDS MORE COWBELL!

AGAIN!

Man, that thing cracks me up.

I use the "Needs more cowbell!" phrase on people when they profess liking or needing something for reasons that I cannot understand.  Katie and Todd get it, but most say something to the effect of, "What are you talking about?"

Cannot say what I notice a whole lot of cowbell in modern music.  Maybe that is a problem.
