Try it now... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5Wf5TsddKc)

That fight scene must've taken months to create and film.
At over 8 minutes long, it's one of the longest fight scenes I've ever seen.

Holy crap  :hot:

I NEED to watch this movie. Brings back good memories from "The New One-Armed Swordsman".

It's a good one.  Loads of fun.  I really need to watch more Kung-fu films from this era.  My supply of Kung-Fu type films has slowly dwindled lately...

Yeah, it's from 1983, which is fairly obvious.  Blend of old school in most of its shooting style, with some of the exaggeration and excess of new wave.  That's generally a good thing, as in a lot of cases they get the best of both worlds.  I've been meaning to see this one for quite a while.  This is also directed by Lau Kar Leung, and assumedly choreographed by him and his brothers.  He's done a lot of awesome stuff.  He choreographed all all three of the original One-Armed Swordsman films (including New One-Armed Swordsman, heh), choreographed and partly directed Legend of Drunken Master, and numerous other films.  He also made a recent screen appearance in Tsui Hark's Seven Swords.

BTW, Shu Feng (the original lead) died in a car crash while this was being filmed, that's why Gordon Liu is the lead.

Neville...I'd give that fight scene a 2 out of 10.
There were several strikes the protagonist made where you could clearly see they did not connect.

You want really good fighting?

The dude with the pole is unstoppable!

Well almost....though I'm not quite sure what happens in the last several seconds...

I was kidding, man. saw this other clip on another board, looks like it comes from one of those Bollywood movies. I found it quite funny.

I had to wonder!   :bouncegiggle:
After I watched that I thought, "He couldn't have thought that was good, did he?"

The 8 Diagram Pole was decent. Too much wire work for my taste and there seemed to be a lack of harmony in style. It was a brawl, not a refined dance of kung fu. I preferred the Monkey kung fu for its better cohesion of form and style. Good shots of the feet to give balance to the fist work and nice perspective shots of the attacking pole. Most of the thrown kicks and punches landed close to their mark and the multiple fighters at once looked and felt naturalistic.

The fun part for me in these martial arts type movies has always been that what you're seeing is impossible in the real world, but they make it look so real and graceful that it's impossible not to believe and enjoy what you're seeing. Another aspect of these movies I enjoy is that the female characters are as good as their male counterparts and are not shy at all about getting in there and fighting. I can't abide helpless females.

I also like how the men rarely refrain from hitting them back either.  I find it obnoxious in western movies when guys won't hit girls in fight scenes.

I find that aspect enjoyable too, the ladies in these movies usually give as good as they get, now my wife is leaning on my shoulder and it's really bugging me so I'm going to hit her, if I do she'll hit me back and then we can have the first match we've had in years. Could be fun. I have to admit that in the early years of our marriage she once got in a back hand blow to my temple that not only knocked me down but also had me hearing bells for about a minute, since then I've been more careful. Been together for 35 years, the family that works out together, stays together.

I've got to add my two bits to this insanity.

One is from Fong Sai Yuk -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEy5sEKmJms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEy5sEKmJms) is legendary.

And then the final scene from Fong Sai Yuk Part 2 -- with God knows how many punches to the chest -- that one still makes me laugh: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FoE_G_5Yos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FoE_G_5Yos)

FYI, if someone wants to rent these films, they're titled "The Legend" and "The Legend 2" in the US releases.

I'm bumping this because I just saw the film.  It's excellent, and is the only Shaw Bros. film I've seen which comes close to topping my all-time fave of theirs, the two original One-Armed Swordsman films.  The film has possibly the fastest weapons based fighting I've seen in a Chinese film which doesn't use undercranking.  But it is still very old school in story telling, sets, and costuming.  Very cool.

This is up there choreography wise with Lau Kar Leung's best, Drunken Master 2.
