Title: Killer Cucumbers?
Post by: Shaggs[Pl] on December 21, 2006, 01:30:37 AM
Hello. If someone know about this film [at least title] I would be really grateful

A long, long time ago I saw in TV document about some dude, who was specialist in making "...from outer space" movies. He directed in early '50s I think. There was little reference to the movie which is considered as his the worst one. I don't remember anything except the thing that it was about invasion of cucumbers. Anyone seen it?

It might be the original Thing from Another World. The alien (played by James Arness) was revealed during the course of the film to be a non-animal lifeform, and was compared to a vegetable (often refered to in some circles and reviews as a "walking carrot".

Another thought was that the documentary might have been about Roger Corman, who directed lots of scifi ("from outer space") movies, among other genres, in the 1950s. I have heard the monster from It Conquered the World compared to a cucumber among other things. Frank Zappa refered to it in the intro to a song as an "ice cream cone" and a "rounded off pup tent affair".

Maybe one of these is what you are looking for. Any other details you can recall would help, the folks at this board are pretty good at figuring these things out if given enough clues and information to work with.

You are the new poster from Poland, right? Welcome aboard! My grandparents, mother, and aunt are all Polish and immigrated to the US from Germany after WWII. Many of my relatives have been back to visit Poland a few times over the years. I hope to make the trip myself some day.

I've always thought that the monster from Creature From The Haunted Sea looked a bit like a malformed cucumber.  Might just be me.

Hahahaha. Or a giant whale turd smothered in seaweed that came to life after a heavy dose of radiation. Now THERE'S a movie idea!  :bouncegiggle:

I don't think the movie is "Thing from Another World," as that film is highly regarded and considered one of the best sci fi films of the '50's. It is more likely Roger Corman's "It Conquered the World." I've seen the monster from that one, and it does look like a cucumber. The other facts fit as well. Corman started making films in the '50's,  and a number of them were science fiction.

James Arness -- The Thing in the original "The Thing" -- was referred to as a carrot from outer space in more than one review, so maybe that IS it!!

Thanks for being behind me, Gerry. Of course, anybody will tell you, you are safer if you are behind me, than in front of me.
