Title: What Did You Get For Christmas?
Post by: Ash on December 26, 2006, 12:20:16 AM
I got some nice gifts.

I received:
A hardcover book:
(http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/9881/075661465101aa240sclzzzjh1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
This book is awesome!

(http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/4667/159223483601aa240sclzzzkz1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
(take a guess where I'll be reading this....)

A five disc DVD encyclopedia set of all of the major events of the 20th century(http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/3835/077862212601aa240sclzzzgr7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

A mini book titled:
(http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/2994/096586680701aa240sclzzzjr0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

A new vacuum cleaner!
(http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/9599/0018550000049215x215si0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
(my old vacuum cleaner blew a rod or something and I haven't been able to vacuum my floor for almost a month...now I can!)

I also got a new iron and ironing board.
That's how I know I'm getting old...when I ask for an iron and ironing board for Christmas and actually get it!  :teddyr:
I have a bunch of shirts that cannot be dried in the dryer, so I hang them up.  They always seem to end up wrinkled no matter how much I try to smooth them out.  So I asked for a new iron & ironing board.  They'll definitely come in handy.

My parents also bought me a new set of tires for my car.
I really needed them.  The old tires were so bad, the steering wheel would shake in your hands and if you didn't hold the wheel firmly, my car would go off to the right and into the ditch..
And my gas mileage went to hell because of that.
Now, it's like driving a brand new car.

The last item I received was a handmade cloth bag for cooking baked potatos in.
Apparently, you wrap a potato in a paper towel, place it inside the cloth bag and cook it in the microwave.
It's supposed to make the potato taste like it came right out of the oven.
Anybody know how and why this would work?
I haven't tried it yet.

I think I got some nice gifts.

How 'bout you?
What did you get for Christmas?

An electric razor
A helluvalotta candy
A wee smidgeon of cash
A nifty little flashlight - http://www.9voltlight.com/
A copy of "The Far Side Gallery 3"

And, I think the word would be, "Vindication". I think I'll treat myself to something.

Ah, the "Christmas Loot" thread.

Todd sent me a very cool "War of the Monsters" print done by an artist in New York.
Katie gave me the "Marines" book I have been wanting for some time.
Jenna, taken to the sci-fi and horror section of a movie store, picked out the "Trilogy of Terror" special edition for daddy. (I'm so proud!)
Also received a good set of sweats from my wife and a pair of rugged shirts from her father
My mother gave me a pair of fuzzy green frog vibrating slippers.  Mom is strange.

To make it easier on my family, I am going to maintain an Amazon wish list.  This was in response to several saying, "We never know what to get you and are afraid of buying you a DVD, because you probably have it already."  This is also my attempt to help mom.  About three years ago she got me a sword from a mall ninja place.  It was, interesting.

I have a sword (from Katie), but it is a broadsword by a company called Starfire.  The company was started by a guy named Zack who used to make swords for a lot of Renaissance Fairs.  If you sharpened it, you could actually go on a crusade with the thing.  I think it is made from some sort of spring steel, like 5160.

FRom the merry Christmas thread...

Kolchak: The Night Stalker complete collection
The Naked Gun 1-3 gift set
Shaun of the Dead
The Amicus Collection: Asylum
The Amicus Collection: And now the Screaming Starts
The Amicus Collection: The Beast must Die
Airplane; the "Don't call me Shirley" Edition (which is not as expansive as the title suggests  )
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist; the Chosen Edition
Grosse Pointe Blank
Game Maker program, which isn't as easy as they say

My headboard is made up of 3 sections, the largest with the capacity to hold 47 DVDs (with some on top of those, I keep my fragile ones from getting crushed like that) I need 3 more to fill the space.

Clothes as normal.

Also got:

Maxtor 200GB Internal Hard Drive

Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi on DVD.  Included in the sets were the graphic novels of each film, each one about 100-150 pages.  Also the DVDs are the double discs with both the original theatrical cut and the redone Lucas cuts.  I've refused to buy the older DVDs as I hate what Lucas did with the films.  It's so nice to finally see the films the way I first saw them.  Very glad my wife picked this up for me.

A new Leatherman!  I've needed one for a long time now as my old one was just about to fall apart from use.

Also got K-Pax and Red Dragon on DVD from my parents.  K-Pax is pretty good but I could pass on Red Dragon.

Also got a crap load of Christmas cash which will go towards this:

1Ghz memory clock speed.  Overclockable.  MMmmmmmm......

For the old one, you might want to contact Leatherman and see if they will do a factory refurbishment on it.  I tend to use Gerber multipliers (because, I use the pliers quite often).  I have sent two pairs in to Gerber for repair, one of them a set I absolutely destroyed in Iraq.  Both came back almost good as new.

I did the same thing with my Mission MPT knife and I still cannot figure out how they fixed it.  I had put a permanent bend in the blade (it is a titanium alloy), along with dings and knocking off most of the coating (at one point, I used it to cut through a wooden wall and pry up a floor).  It was less than two weeks turnaround to get the knife back from Mission and it looked good as new.

Okay, I got one present back in November that was a Silver Anniversary/Christmas present, an Olympus Digital SLR camera with a 14-45 mm lens and a 45-150mm zoom lense. With a couple of extra parts I need to buy I can convert my Meade spotting scope into a 1000mm lense for it.

At Christmas I got :

Boxer Shorts and Pajama pants

A Star Wars The Ultimate Guide Book (from my sister in law, they still don't know the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek

My brother in law gave me a cool jacket that's waterproof nylon on one side and is reversible to fleece on the other.

5 seasons of Buffy
2nd season of Dead Like Me
Social Distortion DVD - Live from Orange County
Marvel Zombies Hooded Sweatshirt  This is so freaking cool!  :teddyr:
Various college T-shirts and hoodies
Windchimes
Soundtrack to Phantom of the Opera - The movie version
New coffeemaker
New flat screen computer monitor
Various jewelry things and whatnot...

Very nice haul this year!  I can't wait to watch the Social Distortion DVD, but have to wait till my Dad leaves.  He only likes country, and he's picky about that.  He's down visiting from Minnesota, and I haven't seen him since my mom died two years ago.  So him being here is really my absolute best Christmas present.

We did Christmas small this year, my sister has a child coming (lots of other stuff to buy that will be needed, my mom is getting ready to retire, I'm kind of retooling my life slowly, probably have some big purchases to make next year and hopefully changing jobs.

My loot, includes extended family and friends presents:

A little bit of clothes
Yet another flashlight (which I can always use)
A book by a local author (inscribed with a message of encouragement)
A little cash
Gift card to Best Buy
Socks (my aunt buys nice socks for all the males in the family every year)
Wind chimes for my newish house
A weed eater (which will probably be exchanged to help pay for a grill), my yard is small with few tight spots where the mower can't get, and I tend to use Roundup and pull weeds after a rain to keep the trouble spots neat.
I also still have a "Crazy Santa" present from my aunt coming, no idea what it is though.

I also got sent home with some stuff that weren't presents but were given to me
to use like nicer bed covers and a yet another book.

I bought myself a Tracfone to use when my landline goes out again (died again over the holiday). Temp fix until I decide whether to go with cell phone only instead. Will require a change in internet also. Crunching numbers on the budget.

The family got me a bunch of excellent cinema. I landed a copy of A Scanner Darkly, which almost completes my Philip K. Dick collection. I haven't gotten Blade Runner yet cause I figure with the 25th anniversary in 2007 there will be some super-deluxe-unrated-with-curly-fries special edition. I also got Star Wars part 4 with the original edition, the latest X-Men movie, and Wifey decided to go for an extra - she got me a copy of Demolition Man on DVD.
This movie is just so darn silly that I can't help but watch it whenever it's on TV...it's wierd to finally see it in widescreen again, since my vhs tape was pan & scan. This is another step towards replacing the VHS tapes with DVDs.

I also got my Playstation 3, just having wayyyyy too much fun with that. Unfortunately I can't play Guitar Hero on it yet, but I am sure they'll make an adaptor.

A book on Buddhism also came for me, a nice gift to mellow me out during the afternoons. Also the standard clothing, gift cards to Blockbuster & Best Buy found their way into my stocking.

A good haul, to be sure  :teddyr:
