Title: What movie do you hate the most?
Post by: Inyarear on December 26, 2006, 02:20:14 AM
From time to time on here, we see topics asking "What is the worst film of all time?" Frankly, I think the question is a little too broad and subjective to have any definitive answer. Therefore, I propose a more relevant and objective question, namely the title of this topic: what movie, for whatever reason, do you hate the most of any you've seen? What movie would rate a skull with you if you were to review it here? What movie is so bad you would use it to torture your enemies, or is it so bad you wouldn't use it even for that? What terrible waste of celluloid is the worst movie you've ever seen?

For my part, I haven't really seen anything that I'd rate a skull yet, though some things might come pretty close. Red-Blooded American Girl, which I have come to realize is really just a soft-core version of a hard-core vampire-themed porno movie complete with bad writing, a worthless plot, and lots of bad acting, is probably the worst film I've ever seen, and I certainly do hate it the most. Judging by the old war stories I've heard from some people on here, though, I've gotten off pretty lightly if that's the worst movie I'll ever see.

How about the rest of you? What movie do you hate the most, and why?

I think Bullethead is the worst movie I've seen.  Boring, confusing, and with one of the stupidest endings ever.  It's one of three or four movies I would rate a 1/10.

I can think of two movies that I really hated when I saw them:

* DUNE - I saw David Lynch's long, boring, confusing version of this movie during its original theatrical run.  I remember sitting in the theater, squirming in my seat, wondering when the hell it was ever going to end.

* WIRED - This is the movie about John Belushi's life and death.  I remember it playing for about 1 week in the local theaters and then quickly disappearing.  A few months later, I rented the VHS tape.  I actually got a headache watching it.  Bad, bad, bad.

I don't know if I can narrow it down to one, but I'll ramble a few off the top of my head.

Zardoz: The mention of the words bad and painful bring up memories of this. There are some peolpe who really like this movie; there are sanitariums for such people too.

The Man Who Wasn't There in 3D: If 3D wasn't already a dying fad by the time this came out in the early 80s, then this movie alone succeeded in not only killing it, but in beating the corpse as well.

Fear No Evil: This absolute pile of *tuna fish* was a poorly conceived and executed (which should have happened to the director) waste of good film stock. Somewhere along the way, someone should have informed somebody that they were making a movie; instead, they ended up with this. This movie (I am really stretching it there) has become my litmus test for video review guides; if they give this anything other than a turkey, they are incompetent.

Stick It - the plot is completely cliched, the theme confused, and the main character excruciatingly annoying.  It's bad enough that every word out of her mouth is a smart-alleck comment, but having a 24 year old actress play a 16 year old girl really pushed it WAY over the top.  This thing grated on my nerves worse than anything else I've ever seen.  Teen movies are supposed to make people feel nostalgic for all the crazy fun they had when they were kids;  This thing just made me feel damned happy to be an adult.

Death Tunnel - I despise the MTV style fast editing that seems so popular in movies these days, and it was inevitable that somebody would eventually make an entire movie that's nothing but MTV style editing, and it's not surprising that the people who did it were completely untalented hacks who also gave us awful acting, no plot, and really no reason for the movie to exist other than to play with the editing equipment.  To think that the film makers could watch this and be pleased with their achievement is a really sad commentary on the human condition.  The director should be punching a timeclock in a factory and inserting tab A into slot B all day every day.  And he'd probably be lousy at that as well.

Let's stir up some old stuff for the newer crowd:

I don't know if "hate" is the right word, but I dislike the Terminator films because the time travel is based on a premise that doesn't work in its own fiction: nothing dead can go through the time tunnel (or whatever you want to call it), so that no weapons can be brought back. The Terminator, a robot and therefore not living, can go back. "But he's encased in living matter!" (<- one of the replies I've gotten) Then why not stick a laser up his butt and get busy wiping out humans? I enjoy the special effects in the movies, but the story line just has that one major inconsistency that makes me dislike the movies. And then they even pretty much do away with the "nothing dead can go through" idea completely in T2 when the T-1000 comes through--there's no part of him that's alive.  I'm not trying to be too picky, and I love escapism. I just want stories that are consistent in whatever fictional universe they portray.

Another popular movie (okay, not so much on this board, but in general) I actively dislike is Titanic. I don't mind that it's a "chick flick"; I like quite a few of those. I dislike it because, underneath all the Titanic scenery and folklore, the movie is about a one night stand. Rose has a fling with Jack, who subsequently dies. She then marries a man who encourages her free spirit and helps her develop into a strong, fully realized woman. His total screen time for this lifetime of devotion is a pan across some photos as Rose nears the site of the wreck, where she joyfully rejoins her frozen lover to dance forever aboard the ghost-Titanic. She's a pretty lousy character in my opinion, but then I probably picked up on this angle more because I am more like that stolid, encouraging husband than like the footloose Jack. Also, I dislike it because it would have been a major flop if it had been set anywhere but on the Titanic; the storyline is a sketchy cliche. This attitude also goes out to Pearl Harbor, another movie that would be nothing without an interesting setting; however, that movie depends even more on "powerful" music and camera angles than Titanic to fool the eye into believing that Ben Affleck can act.

Am I sounding bitter today or what?  :tongueout:

Other movies probably annoy me more than these, but these are among those that garner popular praise they (IMO) don't deserve. There are also plenty of boring movies that have wasted my time that are far worse than the ones I mention here; these two just pop into my mind when discussions like this one come up.

Death Valley: The Revenge of Bloody Bill-I knew I was in trouble when the back of this said "The best Zombie movie in the last ten years!". I actually don't remember most of it (guess I blocked it out) but what sticks out is a couple of really stupid scenes. One is the main character is running away from what I think passes for zombies and a gunshot sound goes off and a zombie fall. The problem is she was running straight not looking behind didn't even point or aim the gun.

Vampires Vs Zombies- This one sticks out in my mind the most. Incoherent plot that seems to have two separate movies going and no zombies and the vampires that can walk in the sun and make cars vanish (don't ask).

Battle Royale 2- I went in knowing (thanks to the reviews) that it wasn't anything like the first so I went in not comparing it to the first. What I got was a heavy/ham fisted social commentary that just p**sed me off to no end and mindless violence that I just hated. I'm actually getting angry thinking about it.

Aeon flux- While Chalize Theron is nice to look at and it was pretty movie to look at I just hated it. I'm a long time Aeon Flux fan (I even love the universally hated/panned MTV show). The only thing good is that the all the cartoons came out on DVD thanks to the movie.

Read your comments about Titanic Derf and I agree.  That film is probably my most despised due to several reasons.  I think it was a slap in the face to all who died in the real Titanic.  I saw it in the theaters when it first came out thinking it would be a historical movie but ended up with a third grade love story teenagers could make out to and 40 something house wives could live vicariously through.

Dantes Peak gets a nod because it was horrid.  However, I look back with fond memories on that film because a buddy and I turned it into a MST3K episode in the theater and everyone around us joined in.

I generally hated the Star Wars prequels.  I think Jar Jar Binks put me over that edge.

Body of Evidence A better title would've been Cliche' ,The Movie, I never really understood how Willem Defoe's character recognized any of those "invitations", and every time he accepts one, he looks like one of the victims in a teen slasher flick that the audience yells at for being so stupid. And seeing Madonna naked at this point in her career was strangely disappointing.

That stupid boxed set I fell for, from the Polonia brothers. Not just because it blasphemed the name of my favorite Roger Corman flick, and not just because it sucked, but also because... uh... Oh, crap! I forgot! Now I'll have to watch the stupid stinkorama all over again.

I am such a masochist!

The 1976 remake of KING KONG! Evenmore blasphamous then the American GODZILLA.
Menard-Is FEAR NO EVIL the one about the Antichrist teenager made back in the early 80's? I like that picture, personally! Zombies, laser fx,and the Ramones and Sex Pistols on the soundtrack! Cool!

The first film that came to mind is Pearl Harbor.

This is a movie that was so bad it made me mad. I walked out of the theater angry. It wasn't just because it was bad, but because they had the nerve to make this movie over 3 hours long. I mean how bad can a movie about Pearl Harbor be? How do you mess up a movie about Pearl Harbor? I didn't think it was possible considering how interesting the source material is, but Michael Bay found a way to do it.

Amen! It sucks in every way possible. This is the textbook-example of a billion dollar piece of crap that makes you wanna nuke hollywood and every godforsaken director in it who has made a movie like he s**ts, without any inspiration whatsoever.

I have several, and they are pretty obvious, if not downright pedestrian.

1) the Bodyguard- I am not against Kevin Costner at al (quite fondof his work, actually) but by gawd I hate this film.
2) 1976 King Kong- This was actually my first non-G rated film, I was all of 5 when I saw it and thought it was just cool.  But I recently re-watched it and its not good at all.  The eco-moralizing was too much (and I'm pretty eco friendly)
3) Requiem for a Dream- I have never seen a director or maybe writer hate his characters or his audience more.   If I wasn't in the middle of an aisle, I'd have walked out, and I NEVER do that.
4) American Godzilla- 'nuff said.
5) The recently reviewed Millenium- If I wanted to watch a movie twice I would do so.

Zardoz- Shawn Connery in his most emarassing role?  Just that endears it to me.
-Ed

Ya know...cut out all the parts with Ben and...who ever else was in it,...same with TITANIC, and its watchable. Kinda.
As for TITANIC...SLEEP WITH THE FISHES, LEO! And say hi to Luca Brazi!

"Deanzilla" loses a lot of its ire if you just look at it as a remake of "Beast from 20,000 Fathoms," rather than a Godzilla film.  With that done, all you have to do is get past the enormous running time.  Well, that and the annoying raptor-inspired scenes with the baby monsters.

"Sextette" is a film that manages to disgust me.
"Candy" - ditto.
"Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?" - painful and disgusting.
"The Trial of Billy Jack" - why didn't you just give all the National Guardsmen and Police pitchforks with dead babies in the tines?

I want to say "The Matrix" simply because it was a total tease.  It had unlimited potential but only gave me s**tty wire-fu and even s**ttier gunfights.

"Kill Bill" was pretty s**tty, too.  It was almost as if ol' Quentin took a look into my mind to find out how to make a movie specifically for me to dislike.

Don't even get me started on "Hulk".  Because if I think about it too much I might cry.

I think I just might have to go with "The General's Daughter", however, since it was the first.  That is, this was the first movie I saw that I absolutely HATED.  I'd seen plenty of movies that were boring, or that I just didn't like, but this is the first I remember that I wished were a living thing so I could kill it.  I felt conned out of my money.  It was like there was somebody hanging around the set to make sure every production decision was the worst one possible.   It probably wouldn't seem that bad if I were to watch it again but it sticks out simply because it was the first.

Not to p people o, here, but some of the films I hate are also loved by some of our regular posters -- Guess it just boils down to a matter of taste.  Like the man said, "hate for whatever reason" -- okay:
Equinox -- both versions -- God knows I've tried, tried, tried to appreciate this thing, but I still find it lame and awful on every level.  A friend has the deluxe boxed set & spent a few hours one afternoon trying to make me see the glory of this film.  Didn't work.  Still hate hate hate this movie.
The Valachi Papers, with Charles Bronson.  An exploitation film trying to ride on the whole "Godfather" thing.  A mobster gets a blowjob at a funeral, in broad daylight, with mothers and children standing around -- he rips the clothes off this girl and she goes down on him right then & there in a crowd of mourners.  Then he gets his head blown off, & everyone is covered in blood.  Then everyone goes out and tortures this guy in a barber's chair.  Endless gore and pointless violence with no discernable story.  Puke.

I think his problem was the incredibly rude way you phrased your comment: "If you like this movie, you belong in a sanitarium."

Anyway, Zardoz is a masterpiece. And, yes, I am completely sane.

DUNE

My favorite sci-fi film. David Lynch hasn't got a single turkey to his name.

If you are going to bother to quote somebody, it would help if you actually quoted them rather than twisting it in any damn fashion you wish. Zardoz is far from a masterpiece and you are not looking very stable when you cannot even quote something correctly when it is right in front of your eyes.

Menard and Isaac, I think that both of you are sane, just apt to disagree on "Zardoz."

Personally, I find the film fairly entertaining, if not intentionally deep as a number of people do.  A fun thing about movies is that they can tickle one person just right, making them love it, while pushing all the wrong buttons for another.

"Zardoz" is a mixed bag for me, due to the history of emails and comments I have received about my review.  A great many were, "You are stupid, because you do not understand this beautiful movie."  Okay, I can bite, what did I miss?  I have asked that same question many times over the years.  The best answer I have received was something along the lines of, "People were not meant to live forever."

When the DVD came out, I saw that it had a commentary track by Boorman.  Finally, I could find out what I was missing.  Well, folks, the writer/director missed the hidden meanings too.  I realized that around the time he was talking about using an overhead projector to create some of the special effects.

The deeper message people see in "Zardoz" is either very simple (people should not live forever) or one that was not intentionally placed there.  Seeing it is not wrong, but looking down on others for not doing so is not right either.

Here's an overview of movies I loathe:

Snakes on a Train
Arachnia
Curse of the Komodo
The 13th Child: Legend of the Jersey Devil

And it hurts me to say I hate Arachnia, because I usually love goofy monster movies like that, but something about that one didn't work with me.

There only two I hate:

Meatweed Madness - I've never seen such a boring and crappy movie. This movie has no normal plot, It focuses on tits (what's more, ugly) and stuff like that and first 10 minutes is sight of a paper cow. An it's Troma's! I want to die :( , :tongueout: )

Second one is "Lucy Sky Diamond" which tribute is the "Guinea Pig" series. I wrote it in other topic: screaming, moshing and fighting with man dressed in a box. Crap

I guess it is a classic case of great title, bad movie, because that title certainly catches one's attention.  "Meatwad Madness" might roll off the tongue better, though the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" crowd would be confused by it.

It's been years since I've seen it, but my memories of Zardoz jibe almost to a tee with Andrew. I enjoyed it, and got it more the the second time I saw it, but there wasn't anything deeper there. Plus it's from an era of scifi films I find interesting, after the bug-eyed monsters and other 50s tropes, but before Star Wars. People often made scifi movies that were supposed to be deeper, most failed but I admire the efforts.

I love Lost Highway but mostly for creepy-ass Robert Blake. He made tha movie for me, and I wish he had been in more of it. The phone call scene with Bill Pullman is a classic to me.

Yet Blake was the star of one of my nominees for this thread: Corky. Maybe the promo on TV made me think it was going to be just another 70s good ole boy and his car flick, maybe it was because of the state of my life at the time, but I loathe that movie. I loved the opening theme song (reprised at the end), but everything else was just horrid. Watching this poor character screw up everything or have people jump to the wrong conclusion as he is slowly destroyed piece by piece. Just an awful way to treat a character and an audience. I was already in a depressed funk, but this film deeped it on it own.

Gargoyles - the 70s TV movie, not because of the movie itself, but for about 10 years it was on TV so much that I couldn't avoid it. I used to see it and think "they could be showing anything else but this is on again!"

I can honestly say that in the realms of science fiction, fantasy and horror there does not exist a film that I actually hate. Sure, there are numerous that I find to be pretty bad, boring or having little entertainment value, but even those contain something that I enjoy to some extent. Even films like Battlefield Earth, Mesa of Lost Women or my personal nemesis, The Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy have some something that draws me to them. The simple truth is that I love genre films and TV shows no matter what form they come in. I guess in my eyes it's an "all or nothing" type of situation.

Now, as for films outside of the scifi-fantasy-horror umbrella, there are plenty of movies I hate. Son In Law with Pauly Shore springs to mind.

I love Menard's avatar:  A demon that looks like Azazel from the Sandman series --
Those who dislike David Lynch for any reason should see "The Straight Story".  Rated G.  That's not a misprint.  Rated G.  A man goes in search of his lost brother, driving a lawnmower across the country.

Reading the "top 5 worst movies" topic made me recall another movie I had hoped to have repressed the memory of since it used to make me so angry everytime it was on.

Ghost Dad starring Bill Cosby. Now I can just ignore Leonard Part 6, no problem. I've tried to watch it, and I honestly lose interest and forget it on. But GD just touches a nerve in me. I don't know if it's the stupid plot, the "comic" hi jinx about leaving the lights off to see him, the bland special effects, the annoying little girl (forgot her in the annoying kid thread too) - but I could feel my blood pressure shoot up from the second it was on.

And for a while it was always on! For a movie that didn't do well at the box office (and is still reviled in some circles on the same level as Leonard Part 6), and that no one seemed to like, it sure played on TV a lot. I can remember being at family get togethers and this being on, no one would watch, but everyone would wonder why I wanted to change it. Even the little kids couldn't be bothered to watch it, yet it was left on since it was "safe" for them to watch.

I like Zardoz, and I've never been successfully committed to a sanitarium.   I find it fun because there is some pretense of there being a deeper meaning, but really there isn't.  It's just kind of bizzaro.  (I assumed you were just gently tweaking us on that point, Menard)

I'll limit myself to movies that I have seen (hence no Titanic:

Air America -- utterly boring, never watched the whole thing through.

Prospero's Book -- It's got a naked, old John Gielgud, which should be bad enough, but it is an utterly confusing mess.

War of the Roses -- I think my friends still haven't forgiven me for taking them to this.  Starts off not too bad, but the descent into the vicious fighting between Hubby & Wife is utterly unfunny black humor.

Showgirls -- this movie made it boring to look at naked chicks, which is a capital offense to me.

I can forgive bad B-movies, as budgets & talent levels are usually low.  These four don't have those excuses.

And, if I may bring it up, why hasn't anyone mentioned Gigli yet?

I just saw "Are You Scared" yesterday and that has to be the worst tripe I have seen in a loooooong time. Imagine SAW with about 1/4 of the budget, 1/10th of the acting abilities (and you all know how marvelous Cary Elwes is!) and just stupid, stupid saw-ripoff-traps and you have "Are You Scared". Man, this movie sucked donkey scrotum. :hatred:

Uh...yeah...sure

And, if I may bring it up, why hasn't anyone mentioned Gigli yet?

Now that you bring it up...

One movie that was an absolute boring piece of 90 minutes waste of my friggin life was Oasis of the Zombies

(insert comment from raj): "What the hell does that have to do with Gigli?"

Not a thing other than Scott liked both of them. :bouncegiggle:

Now, let's see how many more people I can p**s off. :teddyr:

Where in the hell did Jess Franco ever get the idea that he was a director? Sure, he can get naked women in front of a camera, and even get them to perform sex acts (he forgot to put that into Oasis), yet, he seems to make every single moment of it as boring as possible, overly long, and edited like it was thrown together randomly with scotchtape.

That's right Franco fans, take your best shots at me; the Zardoz nuts already did. (http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Tongue/mockery-022.gif)

Okay, this is mine.

"I Was a Teenage Caveman." Not the original 1958 version, which I quite enjoyed, but the 2002 remake for television. How anybody can like that film is beyond me. I'd rather have a hole bored in my head and hot sand poured down the hole, then watch a second of the 2002 version again.

You mean the one with more foul words than a Tarantino flick, but they were just there because the writer could not think of any other words to use?  Yeah, that movie was pretty darn bad, possibly the worst out of that group of remakes.  Which was the best one, "She-Creature" perhaps?  "How To Make A Monster" was pretty darn stupid.

Yeah, that was the one, Andrew.

I can't say which one is the best remake, as I don't think I've seen anyothers.

I'd say the two worst films I've ever seen are The Cat in the Hat (the live action Mike Myers film) and New York Minute.  I must mention that I work at a theater and I got paid to screen each of them, but I regret doing so.

Cat in the Hat is just a horrible and wretched assault on the senses.  It's not funny at all, it's incredibly hideous looking, and every character is turned up to 11 on the nerve-wracking dial.

New York Minute was horribly idiotic and pointless.  Everyone involved with it should've been banned from working in film ever again.

The only movie that I hate more than Ace Ventura, Pet Detective would be Ace Ventura, When Nature Calls.

Oasis of the Zombies was really bad.  Nothing really happens until the end.  A battle scence was taken from another movie.  A pane shot of the oasis is recycled about three times in the movie.  Scences that were suppose to be at night were shot during the day and merely backlit.  Did I menition that it was really boring?

Then why not stick a laser up his butt and get busy wiping out humans?
*geek alert*

In the comics they sent back a bloke with a Terminator whose sole purpose was to have a big sexy gun in his belly, which the Terminator pulled out at the end of issue 1.

I was young.

For me, the movie I hate most would be Phantasm.

Hahahaha.    :hot:   Just kidding.

I would almost vote for Pearl Harbor, even though I've never seen it, because I'm sure it sucks hard, and I avoided it on that certainty.  But since I haven't seen it I can't vote for it.

Ditto, the Cat in the Hat movie.  I didn't watch it, because I knew it'd be screechy and unbearable.  But again, can't vote for that.

Double ditto that again for Gigli, which I Did Not Watch.

For sheer screwing over of its subject material, the Dune movie is way up there for me.  One of the best scifi books ever penned, and they Chinese water tortured it.  But it had so many hilarious one-liners that I can't bring myself to hate it.  If I try,  i just find myself hissing "the tooth... the tooth... the tooth..." to myself.

Whoa!   Electric Dreams.  Now there is a movie I hate.  But the reason why is complex, and not entirely related to the movie (more related to why I ended up watching it.)

Has anyone seen Killer Nerd?  I hate that movie with the passion! Mostly from the horrible actor playing the nerd always saying "Accentuate the positive"....typing it even made me shudder.

Who's production on "Mind Killer", mort?
I think this was shot in Denver in the '80's -- I'm not in it, but I think I do know many in the cast and crew.
Doesn't have the word "Windstar" or Michael Paglia on it anywhere does it?
peter johnson/denny i know 'em all

If I still owned the video I could check, but I'm pretty sure I ritually burned it out in the yard afterwards so no-one else could watch it :)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0158785/

is the one. I still get shivers thinking about how bad it was.

Hmm ... tough question there are many I cared little for, but the one that cames to mind that everyone involved should be hunted down and tortured for the torture they inflicted would be Battlefield Earth.
