Title: How are your movies organized?
Post by: Neon Noodle on January 04, 2007, 09:17:00 AM
There are 4 of the 80-capacity DVD cases in the Noodle house, all from A to Z. These are your run-of-the-mill films.

Next, there are 3 tier holders from the arcane days of the VCR.

The top of the first rack level is the Disney clamshell section for my daughter, the next 2 levels are for her DVD's. the bottom 2 rows are the beginning of the A-Z section of VHS movies I haven't upgraded to DVD yet.

Next rack, top row is exercise videos and DVD's.
next 2 rows, alphabetical VHS and some VHS TV shows like the X-Files.
last row, various VHS and some recorded junk.

Last rack, top tier is picture albums (wife put 'em there, no room elsewhere).
The next 3 rows are box sets that can't be broken up, or fancy-schmancy DVD cases I don't want to break down, like the special edition of SAW with the moveable blood in the cover or the Chronicles of Riddick package.

How about yours?

Randomly on various shelves or in boxes around the house, in at least three different rooms.

We actually don't own a lot of movies (by the standard of this site).  We have a home-made bookshelf with VHS and DVD's in one bedroom and a store-bought VHS cabinet in another.   The box?  Once in a while my daughter gets all of her movies (which includes some of MY movies for some reason) taken away for misbehavior and she has to "earn" them back.  While in 'solitary,' they reside in a box in my closet.

There is no alphabetical organization or anything like that.  We have few enough that we just "know" where each generally is.  With two little entropy machines constantly keeping the house in a swirl, any attempt at further organization is a fruitless endeavor.

Since joining Netflix, we rent much more than buy.

Organized?

Well, I do have the music ones lumped together, and the Barbarian Queen (& other Lana Clarkson sword & sandal ones) set together.

I have a DVD "bookshelf". Its made to hold DVD/CDs but mostly holds DVDs as I have my CDs on one of those in one those big binders that holds a bunch of CDs. I don't have any organization to my DVDs, just have my anime DVDs at the bottom of the shelves and my movies at the top with room to spare.

Like Ulthar every since I got Netflix I rent way more than I buy.

Whats left of my VHS collection is in the bottom cabinet of entrainment centers that holds the TV, DVD player etc..

Most of my DVDs are racks from a company called Boltz. (http://boltz.com/)  The reason I have them is that they do not take up much space and I can break them down into a compact form when we move.  They are a bit heavy.  If I remember, I will take a picture of the DVD rack that sits behind my desk.

The VHS tapes are stacked three ranks deep in some wooden bookshelves, while the LDs are all organized in milk crates.  The milk crates are nice for those, because when it is time to move you just pick them up and go.

My main reason to try and keep everything organized is answering questions.  I pull a title or two off the reference shelves every day, for whatever reason.  Accessing VHS tapes is driving me crazy.  I am going to have to come up with a solution.

My thousands of DVDs are fully alphabetized on a store bought DVD rack that holds roughly 360 movies, the rest are lined up on four shelves that on my bedroom wall. I'm going to add another four because I'm out of room. My VHS tapes take up a video store movie rack that my former employer let me have. I'm very anal about my movie collection and only an elite few can actually borrow anything.

Oh and I have about 200 or so DVDs that I haven't even watched yet sitting on my entertainment center in stacks. Yes, they too are alphabetized......  :buggedout:

I guess some sort of weird fung-shwai, I generally organize by the general feel I get from watching each one, usually to do with genre, time-period, film quality, box art etc. I usually put sequels near eachother, often paying attention to double-feature DVDs.

Regretably, Im stuck with "binders", after so many cases it got out of hand and my living room looked like walmart, mostly I pull the inserts and chuck the cases
a few sets i keep in original cases, but for the most part they are all in binders, within them I have them ordered by mood, theme, genre...no real order to it, except i keep the new ones in one spot,
By the way, with my music collection it seemed the CDs became more abused when i put them a binder.
I hope this dosent happen with my movies

I have no organization what-so-ever.  Yet I still manage to find everything. :)

Funny that this has been brought up now, as I just went through and reorganized all of my DVDs on Sunday, for the new year.

I have 6 DVD racks at the moment.  Four of them are the standard wooden stand up boxes while the other two are metal racks.

I ended up categorizing my DVDs by genre.  Horror films went on one row, action on another, foreign on another, animated on another, etc etc.  If the DVD is foreign horror then there is space for that, foreign action - another space, you get the idea.

I wanted to alphabetize my DVDs, but that would mean that I couldn't have all of the Night Of The Living Dead films in a row and such.

One of the DVD racks mentioned is used for only holding burned DVDs that are in the thin DVD cases.  Those are in no particular order.

I think that is due to two reasons.  One is that they are not in a case, which tries to isolate the DVD from touching other things.  Even if it is only the inside of the case.  Binders are a tighter fit, so if dirt or sand gets in there you start abrading the surface.  Two is that, because they are all in a binder, when you handle one you actually touch others by flipping the pages and such.  The more often something is handled, the more likely it is to be scratched or whatever.

I use some tall bookcases to store mine. I actually bought extra shelves to maximize the storage capacity of each one. I separate my DVD's into categories and then alphabetize them from there. Most of my movies are all together except for Midnite Movie double features and any other multi-movie set - those are on a shelf to themselves. All my Kaiju films are on another, Disney films take up half a shelf, Anime takes up several, non-anime animation (Simpsons, South park, etc) are in their own section and TV sets take up a large chunk of space. We're planning on doing some re-arranging, but right now the DVD's line two entire walls of one room.

I have 3 book shelves about 5 feet tall and 2 1/2  feet wide.

All of my DVD's are alphabetized and I don't break mine up into individual genre's. I tried that one time and it proved to be a headache.  Some movies don't fit neatly into one particular genre.

I own about 750 DVD's so I pretty much have to alphbetized  or I wouldn't be able to find anything.

I also do the same with my Cd's as well.

I just got them stacked all over the place in no order (I even got my arthouse films mixed with z-grade trash). Good places in my house to stack them are on tables, next to my tv or computer, and even on the unoccupied bed above me (I sleep on a bunk bed by myself now cause my brother likes sleeing on the couch instead. ah well, his bed is now my closet/shelf/garage haha). As long as it's in a spot nobody in the house will step or trip on, then it stays there. I even got some VHS tapes just laying under my bed. Yeah I'm a slob but I've been able to keep track of where a specific title is in this complete anarchy system I have.

I have 3 shelves filled with cheap DVD's. With 2 shelves of the films I have already viewed and 1 shelve of films that have yet to view on my stand-by list. Stand-by list is now well over 200 films.

Almost all of our VHS tapes are stored in 3 storage units, 2 with 3 drawers and 1 with 2 drawers in no particular order but I have no problem finding things in these units. There are 2 shelf units in the living room, one on each side of the TV, Gamecube starts at the top left hand unit, grouped by title/type so that all related games are together, at the bottom on this side are VHS tape sets. To give an idea of how they're organized, my Godzilla set is right after Walking with Dinosaurs and followed by all 3 Jurassic Park movies, last item on his side is Band of Brothers DVD set.
Top of right hand side holds my wife's Russel Crowe collection, after that comes all my DVD's, everything from Rodan and Kolchak the Night Stalker to The Magic Sword and The Battle of Britain in no apparent order but again I have no problem finding things, but then we really don't have all that much.

However they land in the big bins into which I toss them.

Most of mine are still in boxes from my move last year, a the joys of having a junk room. About half are organized by genre or theme: anime, horror, HK or martial arts, western. some boxes are a mish mash general stuff. My VHS tapes are in their own boxes in the same area.

Most of the recent purchases or stuff I am actively planning to watch soon I keep on my coffee table. Some TV show box sets sit out there as well if it's stuff I watch a lot or want close at hand when I need a pick me up: Newsradio, Due South, Monty Python.

The Cd's are mostly organized by genre or artists whose styles lead into each other, to me anyway.

I'm getting tempted to pare down my collections, as part of an attempt to get that room decent looking, and to purge myself of movies and music I no longer like or bad purchases. I cut way back on buying DVDs and music. New year, time to organize and make more changes. The book backlog needs a good slash and burn offensive as well.

They are not. I have DVDs & BluRays stacked on my dresser. I have VHSes at the foot of my bed in a crate. I have a mix of both near my computers. It’s a mess.

But it’s my mess.

Not.
VHS Tapes on a shelf. DVD's in an old wooden soda pop crate.
