Title: Ultraviolet.
Post by: Bill C. on January 07, 2007, 12:21:14 AM
Starz HD ran this earlier tonight. First time seeing it.

Indeed! This movie was complete crap! I was hoping it would at least stupify me, in a good way, but as it turns out, Ultraviolet is BORING AS HELL! How could a futuristic vampire war type flick be boring?!?!?!??!?!? I think even Uwe Boll saw this movie and hated it!  :bouncegiggle:

Why can't anyone make a good movie featuring a female super hero?

I saw this movie not to long ago and it remained of Aeon Flux. All style no substance nice to look (Milla as well as scenery) and no plot what so ever. Saying that I actually enjoyed it for whats it worth (Watchs my Karma go down)  :teddyr:

Nothing I plan to watch again or own but It did kill time.

One part that had me laughing though in begining when so goes "I hate all Humans" then a couple scenes later she asked to use the weapons she carrying to kill a entire area of humans she "I can't kill all those people". :twirl: All before she finds out whats in the case shes carrying.

And what the hell did those Asian guys on the roof have to do with anything? That had no bearing to the movie in a bit. Than again story and plot where a enemy to this movie.

I enjoyed it for adding some interesting ideas to sci-fi film, which is what I was in the mood for at the time.

I hated it for being a pointless Vampire-type film [utterly useless, when there was so much potential] and of course plot, story and characters was crap as well.  It all just seemed so rushed.

But hey, I'm kind of in agreement with Rich.  Aeon Flux is pretty much the same as this one: pretty, but boring.

All swing and no ding I suppose.

I just watched the trailer and enjoyed watching Milla. I can watch Milla all day long. You mean there was actually a longer version of the trailer called a movie? :teddyr:

I enjoyed Milla and her tight stomach...that is what this film was about afterall. The movie was weak but I can watch Milla wearing tight clothes and showing her stomach...that's entertainment.

One of the reasons I loved "The Fifth Element."  Milla wrapped in a few bandages and with bright red hair.

Its like these are true "man" movies. Women don't get why we watch UnderWorld, UnderWorld 2: Even Tighter Leather, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2: Look Milla Naked Last Scene!

Indeed, the only reason I bought Ultraviolet was to drool over Milla. I watched it once with the sound just to find out what the "story" was about, but since then I'll pop in it the DVD player and let it play with no sound, just enjoying the visuals.

I'm watching Ultavioet this weekend.  I only watched about the first 2/3 but I've enjoyed the heck out of it.

It's pretty bad, and is a huge letdown after Equilibrium.  EQ has some significant flaws, but it is still well-directed, has great action scenes, and has great performances from several excellent actors.

Still, I enjoyed Ultraviolet for its badness and stupidity too.  It deserves a review on this site eventually, me thinks.

The only reason I didn't buy Ultrapurple was to avoid Milla Jovovovovovovitch

In retrospect, the thing that really stuck in my head about Ultraviolet was the look.  And not in a completely good way.  It was like someone took all the overly blatant design choices from The Matrix and Casshern...and a tiny dash of, yes, Equilibrium...put them in a blender...put the blender itself on slight Gaussian blur...and then overprocessed the whole *%&#*&%!! thing to the point where it was gratuitously stylistic for the sole purpose of being gratuitously stylistic.  And even that was cranked up to 11.

I could probably forgive it a little bit if the action sequences were a little more consistent.  Some were zippy-fast, and some appeared slow as molasses.  Make up your damn minds, people.

And as for Milla...I suppose I can't hate on her too much, she's gotta eat.  And the monosyllabic badassette, thanks to Kate Beckinsale (I really need to watch my Underworld DVD one of these days), is/was back in minor vogue anyway.  But why did her stomach look rendered in this movie?  (Mr. Wimmer, however, should have known better.  I'd love to know if the thing mentioned earlier about studio interference is true, though...)

I don't know, she seems to have a knack for netting rich producer/directors.  Not that I blame the guys, but I do not think her slim and lithe form comes from a ramen diet.

Then, sir, you are mental :)

Possibly the worst film I've ever seen in a cinema.

The director has gone on record saying that the version released in theaters was not anywhere close to his intended cut. He said that the studio took over editing the movie and locked him out of the editing room as he didn't have any say at all in the final cut.

The extra stuff in the "unrated" version is just stuff they had to cut to avoid an R rating from what I've gathered.

I imagine they didn't literally lock him out. Imagine him banging on the door, going "let me in, you guys! Don't make my great film into a piece of crap!"

I'm sure that's not the way it actually went down, but he has said he wan't allowed to take part in editing the movie.

This seemed to be a series of fight scenes with no connection other than Milla, the fights were well done and she's a nice looking young lady but at the end of the film I found myself asking "what was that?"

It occurred to me right after posting this that 20 or 30 years from now Ultraviolet could be a favorite of bad movie aficionados, just  something to think about.

Exactly. It tries so hard to be cutting edge, that in a few years' time it will look as quaint and dated as a MC Hammer video now. This is definitely a future classic. It has everything: spectacular scenes, B movie queen, stylish looks, not quite up to par SFX, no story to speak of. I bet the kid from 'Thank you for smoking' is already trying to forget he ever was in this one.

Also I liked the way the security forces kept on surrounding suspects and then opened fire.

Re: the editing, sounds a bit like Highlander 2. There's the director's cut released, which still doesn't get round the fact the immortals are apparently aliens, something never hinted at before or since. I don't think the greatest editor in the world could make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

ULTRAVIOLET can lay claim to being the one movie I saw this past year that experienced the most walkouts. I was sitting in a seat by the exit and anytime someone left they had to pass in front of me. Over half the audience passed before me before the end of the film, only one or two ever came back.

I thought the director's cut actually completely excised the aliens subplot thing?  I'm going off memory though, as I haven't seen either version in a long time.  I do remember that Highlander 2: The Director's Cut was a HUGE improvement though, probably the biggest improvement I've ever seen in a recut of a film.
