Title: Snakes on a Plane DVD
Post by: SaintMort on January 07, 2007, 02:11:24 AM
So in 2006 Hollywood had a film on their hands that was going to be a record breaking hit; or a complete flop. The Internet has always proved to be a great source for information; reviews on websites like aint-it-cool-news.com can literally make or break a film’s success. Furthermore movies are setting up camp at websites like myspace and directors and actors are writing blogs in order to keep people interested in their film till it’s theatrical release. So when hundred’s of imdb users were raving about upcoming Samuel L Jackson film “Snakes on a Plane” the people at New Line Cinema began to feel very confident with their film.

I’m sure you’ve heard the hundreds of stories about the movie. How they were going to change the title and Samuel L Jackson said that if they changed the name he’d drop off the film; or perhaps you heard about how because of the extreme internet hype New Line took 5 days to reshoot the film to add some more gore, nudity and language to raise it from it’s PG-13 rating to an R rating, even taking the new catchphrase from an internet parody video.

Of course 2006 also taught us that not everything that you read on the internet is neccessary true (I know Conrad; sad but true). Snakes on a Plane was a flop. Hopefully the movies DVD release will do much better than it’s theatrical run because the film is actually quite brilliant.

The film follows surfer Sean Jones (Nathan Phillips) who witnesses gangster Eddie Kim murder of a prosecutor. Sean is taken into protective custody by Neville Flynn (Samuel L Jackson). While they board a red-eye flight for Sean to testify against Eddie at trail they discover that Eddie has released poisonous snakes on the plane.

The film is dumb and absolutely ridiculous and that’s the point. Many would call it a b-movie on a A-movie budget and I agree with that statement but furthermore it’s a parody on all action-horror movies. The film doesn’t have any moral and I think that’s another appeal to it really, it’s not a film that you watch to apply to your life and draw lessons from, it’s something to put in if you want to have a good time.

4 stars out of possible 5?

I loved the fact that critics were giving Jackson a hard time about being in this movie and he told them to stuff it. He said that anyone who goes to a movie called Snakes on a Plane knows what they're getting.

The producers tried to change the title but Sam Jackson told them he signed on for Snakes on a Plane.

As of Jan. 7 Snakes on a Plane was number one in DVD sales and number five in rentals.

I didn't care too much for this movie. My problem with it was it didn't go far enough with the campiness. The movie was somewhere inbetween being a silly campy movie and a serious thriller. It didn't work as either.

I enjoyed this film and it was great to see a Johannesburg boy (Trevor Rabin, who did the music) doing so well for himself.

As I said on another thread, I took a small rubber snake  :buggedout: with me into the cinema and after the film was over, I went to the box office and asked for my money back, complaining bitterly that one of those mutha-------- snakes had escaped.

The joke was on me later when I flew from Cape Town to Johannesburg in October last year and Samuel L. Jackson was on the plane............................ :teddyr:
