Title: Best Jean-Claude Van Damme Movie
Post by: Ash on January 07, 2007, 04:21:46 AM
Well, we've already tackled Steven Seagal's movies.
So, it's only natural that we follow up with Van Damme films.

I've always liked Van Damme's movies.
The "Muscles from Brussels" has been a favorite actor of mine since I was a teenager.

I voted for Lionheart.
I love that movie and can watch it over & over.

THE LION'S FIRST FIGHT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGbBl6yRYvc)

LIONHEART'S FIRST PRO FIGHT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw_oZ98uDwY)
(say it with me....NUT PUNCH!  POW!!)

THE LION'S POOL FIGHT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By6NvQBWr2U)

WATCH THE FINAL FIGHT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oO9sDcpKh2E)
LIONHEART VS. ATILLA!

Double Impact and Bloodsport tied for 2nd place.
I also like The Quest.
Roger Moore & Van Damme give good performances in that one.

How about you?
What's your favorite Van Damme film?

I voted for Lionheart, but I have to say that all of the Jean-Claude Van Damme movies that I've seen have been enjoyable, I would rate them all about equal. His movies are sort of like the Denny's restaurants of film, they're not going to be really great, but they will be familiar, with the occasional surprise, a little humor, and always good.

I've only seen two movies on that entire list, Timecop and Universal Soldier. I went with the latter.

Hard Target is probably my fave.  The action scenes are mostly well-handled, and pretty amusing.  I like both bad guys a lot - Vosloo and Lance Henriksen both do a great job.  And it has Wilford Brimley as an arrow shooting, one-line spouting Cajun.  What more do you need?

I'm going to pick LEGIONAIRE because I just like films are supposedly set in the Desert regions of North Africa. Van Dam should have continued that Legionaire idea and given up martial arts films.  The film itself could have been better, but it was still neat as he didn't use martial arts except for some boxing in the film.

Bloodsport  Brings me back to childhood memories of watching TBS's "Movies for guys who likes movies" program all the time.

Hard to tell some Van Damme Movies apart.  I mean alot of his movies are centred around a martial arts tournament.  That said I voted for his best fighting tournament movie, Bloodsport.

Ku-mi-te!   Ku-mi-te!  Ku-mi-te!  Ku-mi-te!

 :hot:

(That's a vote for Bloodsport, by the way.)

Better? Hard Target, for the villains and the terrific action, or Sudden Death, which is one of his most suspense-driven movies.

Funnier? You can't go wrong with Double team or Knock Off. Just remembering the fight in the Coliseum or the rickshaw race makes me crack up.

Legionnaire all the way.

Not only is this quite possibly the only movie he is in where he doesn't have absolute strength over everyone around him, but it also shows an acting side of Van Damme.  My favorite pick is definitely: Legionnaire (with Double Impact a close second, because of the hot girlfriend).

I've always liked Bloodsport the best.

I also like how in that movie due to his thick accent, everytime he says Jenny, it sounds like Johnny.

I went with Cyborg.  It has such a weird atmosphere to it, such a quirky low-budget feel to it, I dunno...it just does the job for me.  A real throwback to the post-apocalyptic cheese of the '80s.

Bloodsport although the guy from Revenge Of The Nerds made a good portion of that movie entertaining than Van Damme did.  The slow motion part where he gets blinded in the final fight makes me laugh for some odd rason.

Yeah, mainly it makes me laugh since Bolo pulls the powder from his crotch of his pants.   :bouncegiggle:

A few of you voted for Legionnaire.

I've only seen that movie once...but from what I can remember, it was actually pretty good.
(even though I thought he looked silly in that French Foreign Legion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Foreign_Legion) kepi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kepi) hat  :tongueout:)
I might have to watch it again soon.

One of his more recent Direct-to-DVD films In Hell (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0339135/), was suprisingly good.
That one is definitely worth a look if you're bored and want some Van Damme action.

Yes, "In Hell" is probably his last great movie, and kudos should go mainly to Ringo Lam. His experience in the HK "Prison on fire" series really shows here, and Krakavi must be the worst prison ever to appear in an action film. Van Damme's acting is also among the best he's ever done. If only the ending was better...

BTW, I was quite amused to hear VD in the making of featurette saying that "In Hell" would become an instant cult movie, or something among the lines. Somebody should tell him that even cult movie geeks tend to avoid films with male rape scenes.

INFERNO/DESERT HEAT

Simply for the cast...

Vincent Schiavelli!!!

Pat Morita, Danny Trejo, Kevin West, Larry Drake, Jaime Pressley, Bill Erwin, Priscilla Pointer, Lee Tergesen, Jeff Kober!!!

Not to mention, but I will...
JIM HANKS  & BRETT HARRELSON, brothers of Woody Harrelson and Woody Hanks.

Well, it does have plenty of madness going on. My favourite bit is VD screwing the two bimbos he just saved from some rednecks. That, and the final fight.

I was a huge VanDamme fan back in the day.  I've seen all his movies up to Replicant.  Then he went Eastern bloc, like Seagal and Snipes, and I haven't seen anything beyond that.  Maybe 'The Order'?

My vote goes to Timecop.  It's the best directed and exciting of all his movies, IMO.  Imaginative and loads of fun.

I watched Bloodsport and Kickboxer dozens of times.  I saw No Retreat, No Surrender (which some of you may know as Karate Tiger) zillions of times and I rejoiced when they finally released it on DVD.  I have the soundtrack to the American version of No Retreat No Surrender, which has a different one from the Australian version.

Lionheart was great.  It was called Wrong Bet in Australia.

I even enjoyed Cyborg!  I got it on DVD a while ago, and was treated to some truly solid Golan-Globus 80's nostalgia.

I thought Hard Target was excellent, as was the other John Woo one, Maximum Risk.  The Tsui Hark-directed Double Team was funny as heck.  Knock Off, though, was just wrong.

Come to think of it, VanDamme has made some really solid quality movies for his genre, and he deserves better than the stupid East European trash he's coming out with these days.

Since Wake of Death was the last movie I saw with him in and I kinda enjoyed it in the way that I enjoy direct to video action movies now and then. So I'll give it a vote.

OMG that movie was hysterical..."So, It is you! The son! Is it not?"
"But this time it's gonna be different....RUSSIAN!"

Personally, I love Kickboxer to bits, but I have yet to see the full film of Bloodsport which seems to be so popular.

I was in this by virtue of Dennis Hansen of Chuck Norris movies fame.
We (brother & I) were Cynthias' bodyguards. Shaved heads at garage, pool and final fight screen.

My brothers Kent, Kimm, Kary were in film. Frank Dux was very interesting in spite of reputation.

It's been awhile since I've seen Lionheart, but I do remember the nutshot.  However, I'm p**sed that you put the piece of sh!t Street Fighter on the the list.  It does not deserve to be up there

Obviously Street Fighter is his worst movie, as it is a cheap piece of lying propaganda. (see avatar)

His most tolerable movie is Bloodsport, the tournament movie that created his career.

I actually like The Quest. Albiet not for Van Damme. That monkey fighter and that brazillian guy were awesome to watch fight.

I went mad the first time I watched "Street Fighter", but I happened to stumble into a TV screening a few years ago. I was mentally exhausted (can't remember why), and I found the silliness far more appealing that time. I even laughed a few times, such as when the heroes are "executed" by water rifles, or when Zanghief learns he's the only member of Bison's army who doesn't get paid.

Aw, lay off Street Fighter. I mean sure it was disapponiting in even more ways than it had a right to be, and it was more than a shame that it was Julia's last movie, and it insulted the game, and... okay. I like the movie, but that's too much of an uphill battle to try and defend it. I'm not even going to try.

My vote goes to Sudden Death. Powers Booth was a phenomenal bad guy in that one. Megalomaniacal, witty, and a complete bastard. Awesome. I also really enjoy the part when Van Damme tries to convince the terrorist not to shoot him because he's got C-4 in his hand. The gist:

McCord - "This (points) is plastique explosive, one of the most dangerous exposives in the world."
Terrorist #7 - "Save it, I know how that stuff works. No trigger, no bang bang."
-McCord kills him with the tube, wire cover, needle thingamajig he had just made.-
Terrorist #8 - (From behind him) "Drop it!"
McCord - (Turns) "This (points) is plastique explosive..."

Also, McCord's daughter sees the female terrorist off someone in the mascot suit, female terrorist in the mascot suit turns to shoot her but is out of bullets.

Carla - (Click) "F**k! You owe me a mother's day card."

I saw this one with my father. His only critique had nothing to do with the several physically impossible stunts. No, his only problem was: "There's no way in hell the Blackhawks would be playing the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals." I had to agree.

I also enjoyed The Quest.

I picked up that new Van Damme 3 movie pack the other night (it has Kickboxer, Replicant and Universal Soldier in it).

I hadn't seen Universal Soldier for a while and it just blew me away with how knowingly dumb the movie knows that it is.  No one is taking this seriously at all and there is a lot of tongue in cheek aspects to it.
