Title: Best movie of the 90s????
Post by: SaintMort on January 26, 2007, 02:45:15 PM
In the IMDB Trivia page: Natural Born Killers was acclaimed as the #1 film of the 1990s by Entertainment Weekly.

now I'd like to start off with I didn't like this movie very much. I found the camera technics to be unneccessary and really found the film to go on and on and on. I didn't Hate it though, I just found it pretty average. As far as best film of the 90's though? Absoultely not... I'm curious if you agree or not?

I can think of lots movies i'd put on that list above this movie...Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption and Clerks come to mind. Even movies like Se7en, American Beauty, Silence of the Lambs, Fight Club, Big Lebowski, Fargo, Forrest Gump or Ed Wood.

That's just my opinion however... what are some of your opinions?

I agree; there were LOTS of movies better than NATURAL BORN KILLERS.  I do not consider Entertainment Weekly to be a 'reliable source' of such things.

this is true... they put Brick as the number 2 worst movie of 2006... that was probably one of the best movies I've ever seen!

I must agree.  I think Natural Born Killers was average.  I also agree with SaintMort's movie choices.  Clerks and Forrest Gump are two of my all time favorites.  I don't think NBK even compares with the others he listed.  And lets not forget Saving Private Ryan.

Braveheart was made in 95 I believe and to me that is one of the better movies ever made. I can remember watching it for the first time and being absolutly mesmerized.

I'm with SaintMort.  My God, Brick is a good film.

I never liked NBK that much either.

I'd say maybe Pulp Fiction or something like that as the best film of the 90s.

There are many, NBK is not on my Top 10 of the 90's or even Top 25

One of the best IMHO of the 90's ...

Saving Private Ryan
The Shawshank Redemption
Schindler's List
Fight Club
The Matrix (Only because it was ground breaking at the time)
Léon
Se7en
Braveheart

Just to number a few that I think are better than NBK from the 90's

I always thought Natural Born Killers was very overrated. My favorite movies from the 90's are the CAT III's like Story of Ricky, Untold Story, and Ebola Syndrome.

NBK was more like an overated music video, without the music.Oliver Stone,as a director,is seriously overrated. I enjoyed MARS ATTACKS much more than this. Dang, I liked ANACONDA more than NBK!

I actually put NBK in my Top 10 Worst films list and I'm sticking by it. Some more great 90s films include: TREMORS, MATINEE, IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS, TERMINATOR 2, JACOB'S LADDER, DARK CITY, PI, OCTOBER SKY. Sure there's even more.

One of the problems with growing older is being unable to recognize the subtleties of "era change" --
To me, "The 80's" and "The 90's" are still present-day.  I still think of anything in 1990 as being "modern times".
So it's 2007 -- Soon you'll all start to get the sense that this whole business of going 'into the future' is some sort of modernist con.
My wife can point out "80's" hair and "80's" fashion in some of the videos we watch, but to me it's all a blob.  I'm trying to learn.
I read an article in National Geographic once that elaborated on a social theory that only after about 50 years or more had passed could the cultural subtleties of a given era be recognized.  Thus, you had the so-called "Etruscan" bronze horses being recognised stylistically as fakes immediately in the 1970's, as the fakes were created in the 1920's, with the artistic conventions of that era.

I liked Natural Born Killers [one of the few it seems] but it definitely doens't deserve top spot.  The editing style was very effective and you have to remember that this film was one of the earlier [that I can remember at least] films that used that oft-quoted-as-negative 'MTV style' editing.

Some could argue in terms of media influence and whatnot, considering the spate of press about it's violence and causes of etc, but even then there's probably some better options.

There's no doubting that in the academic world that NBK is up there in influence, just based on my own studies etc, but as a 'best movie of the 90s' well, that's a tough crowd to battle with...

I'm not going to add to what was the best, since there's too many to choose, and with different 'classifications' I spose, but I will agree that some of the ones already mentioned are awesomely terrific.

I didn't care for "NBK" either.

Film of the 90s? "Fight Club", to be honest. Can't think of a film I enjoyed more, that was as well made.

GOODFELLOWS(1990) is one of my favorite movie of ANY era. A great movie, agreat cast, and a great director. And the soundtrack is one I would actually buy. Just writing about it makes me want to see it again.

Fargo
Pulp Fiction
Goodfellas / Casino
Dazed & Confused

The 90s also gave us UNFORGIVEN, CITY OF LOST CHILDREN, RINGU, BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, GATTACA, STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, JURASSIC PARK, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and THE IRON GIANT.

Fargo or Forrest Gump IMO. Fight Club is a true new classic but it was made so close to 2000 it doesn't count

Natural Born Killers is on my list of movies I wish to forget, there were plenty of others that are much better, Fargo, Forrest Gump, Braveheart, Tremors, The Iron Giant, Mars Attacks, etc. I'm trying to cover all categories of film in an effort to show that almost any other film from the 90's is better than Natural Born Killers. Of course in a hundred years or so it's entirely possible that the only film from the 90's to survive and be remembered will be Natural Born Killers, if thats the case, will our descendants think of us as intelligent thoughtful people or will they be saying "Geez, what a bunch of idiots, look at the crap they watched."

I didn't hate natural born killers, but there were so many better choices that it makes almost no sense why anyone would pick that. Off the top of my head it would be Pulp Fiction. Clerks would easily be the best low budget/independent film, and since it isnt fair to compare something with millions of dollars behind it to an indie flick, those would be my two choices.

Put me down in the liking-NBK category.  It's one of those films you either really liked or really hated, though.  Lessee...what films really stuck out in my head from that decade...

Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, and The Matrix.  Mother of God, what they started...

Titanic.  If for no other reason than the last hour of the movie.

Pulp Fiction.  I'm still not a rabid fan of it, but I can definitely see its appeal--and what it also begat.

Se7en.  An absolutely stellar film that's so incredibly, astonishingly screwed up I can only watch it once every couple of years.

UnforgivenWow.

GoodFellas and Casino, two sides of the same coin...

Schindler's List.  'Nuff said.

Some of my picks for 90s include:

Braveheart
Heat (the DeNiro-Pacino dialog was classic)
Galaxy Quest

There've been a lot of good choices.  I've never seen Natural Born Killers, but I've been tempted to pick up the Director's Cut DVD from Wal-Mart's $5.50 bin.  Here're some of my favorites:

12 Monkeys, The Fisher King, Babe, Babe: Pig in the City (This movie is genius!), Unforgiven, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, The Iron Giant, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Forrest Gump, Gattaca, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Dark City, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park (It's amazing that the special effects are still better than most movies that've been released in the past several years), Gremlins 2, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Ed Wood, Searching for Bobby Fischer, Fight Club and there're others but that's enough I s'pose.

I haven't even seen NBK, and really have no interest in it.  If it's got MTV-style editing, forget it.  I saw Pulp Fiction and wasn't the least bit impressed, so I pretty much ignore anything in that genre.

My favorite "good" movies of the '90s, in no particular order:

Wild Things
Starship Troopers
The Mummy (Sommers version)
Terminator 2

eh...that's about the only ones that really deserve mention on a "best of" list.  There were a few others I enjoyed, but if I haven't even bothered to buy the DVD or wouldn't make a point of watching them when they air on TV, then I'm not going to put them on my list.  I actually thought there were quite a few more movies but looking at the IMDb, two-thirds of my choices are from the 2000's.  Of course, it was a fantastic decade for "bad" movies, and seeing as I'm a fan of bad movies, my tastes don't really run towards the "good" stuff anyway.

STARSHIP TROOPERS might not be the best, but it's my personal favorite.

Honorable mention go to:

Matrix
Terminator 2
Forrest Gump
Braveheart
Ed Wood
Tremors
Reservoir Dogs
Heat
Fargo
Unforgiven
Pulp Fiction
Mantinee
Temptation Of A Monk
Good Fellas
Saving Private Ryan

Would like to see WILD THINGS, SE7EN, and USUAL SUSPECTS.

It was a rough decade for movies.

It was a rough decade for movies.

Wild things is worth a look, but probably only once.  Se7en and Usual Suspects however are a must. Both are excellent films.

Seven has some of the most interesting visual style and cinematography I've seen in a film, and Suspects, well, Usual Suspects is just a solid film.

So many great films of the 90s. I'd have to say L. A. Confidential, Se7en, and Clerks are all close contenders for me.
