I believe "In the Mouth of Madness" is one of the most frightening movies ever made.  I don't know if anyone would agree, but I figured I would make mention of it.

For me The Fog wins, I think it's Carpenter's best film.

I would have to stick with either The Thing, Halloween, or the original Assault on Precinct 13.

I'm a big fan of The Thing.  Freaks me out.

The Thing for me too.

It has to be The Thing, some of the stuff in that still makes me squirm but it's closely followed by They Live which has got some crazy stuff in it as well, "I'm giving you a choice, either put on these glasses or start eatin' that trash can".

For pure enjoyment, it has to be Big Trouble in Little China

Assault was pretty bland for my tastes, could've been done a lot better IMO. So  could Big Trouble, which needed some more brain for ti's action (also I couldn't help feeling sorry for Russel after how pathetic he pretty much proved himself in that one :teddyr:). Never seen They Live or the apocalypse trilogy, which the exception of The Thing, which was a masterpiece. Halloween and the Fog are right up thee with it, although not quite acheiving what it did.

Sadly I haven't seen Carpenter's earliest or latest work.

Up to that Mars film, you'd be hard-pressed to find a bad John Carpenter film. My personal favourite is "Big Trouble In Little China" but I like nearly all of them and love most.

Depends. I use to love "The Thing" and "Vampires" a lot, but I've seen them so many times they're starting to lose their appeal. Right now, it probably is "Prince of Darkness" or "Cigarette burns", his first episode for "Masters of Horror".

I must admit, "The Thing" really stands out to me, but to be honest, while I probably remember every single scene in the film as having a feeling of tension in it, I have to give it to "The Fog" because it is the only Carpenter film that still gives me chills no matter hhow many times I see it. I think t's the sounds in that movie that make it so good. I still jump with the rock falls at the beginning and when the chair moves by itself a few mintues later. "Prince of Darkness" had a few good moments in it too... I like a lot of Carpenter films (They Live, Big Trouble in Little China, In The Mouth of Madness), but I geuss the scariest Carpenter film for me is Escape from LA... because it makes me wonder how many other cities could be used next for another damn ripoff sequel. Kurt Russell, if you read this, please, PLEASE don't do another sequel to Escape from New York!!! :bouncegiggle:

I personally feel his best is THE FOG (1980) but then again, I actually like everything directed by Carpenter up till and including IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS, especially THEY LIVE, THE THING, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, HALLOWEEN and ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13.

The Thing gets my vote, but Halloween and The Fog are a very close second and third.

The Thing, They Live, Escape from NY and Big Trouble. In that order are my fav.

I think I would have and easier time naming the films I didn't like than movies I did like, because I love John Carpenters films. I personnaly think he is the best horror movie director ever. The only John Carpenter film I really don't like is Prince of darkness, its such a disapointment to watch. The Fog would have to go as my second least favorite. Other than those two everything else he did kicks ass.

1) The Thing- Carpenter's masterpiece.
2) Prince of Darkness- only saw it once, but it's stuck with me. Most disturbing imagery of all his films, IMO
3) Halloween- I like the tension and stalker aspects of this film.
4) Big Trouble in Little China- A fun film, and Kurt Russell's dorky impression is one of Carpenter's funniest scenes.
5) Cigarette Burns- Another tension-laced film, but the black humor was a little heavy-handed.

I like most of John Carpenter's movies.  I will list some of them in the order of my favorite:

1. The Thing.  Very freaky, yet it never gets old.
2. Vampires.  I like the new take on the original vampire.
3. Big Trouble in Little China.
4. Prince of Darkness.
5. They Live.
6. In the Mouth of Madness.
7. The Fog.
8. Halloween.
9. Escape From New York.

Has anyone else scene a patter here?  Kurt Russlle is in at least 3 of the movies.
