Title: Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Post by: zombie no.one on January 28, 2007, 11:58:16 PM
I've always had a major soft spot for this film. It's a bit like the Simpsons in the way that although it's primarily aimed at kids, for every kids' joke there will be 2 or 3 twisted or slightly darker ones that no kid could understand. And like a lot of great films, it seems to all happen in some kind of dream environment that mixes reality with fantasy.

The final scene, where Pee Wee goes to the drive-in to watch himself play a cameo role in the Warner Bros movie of his own adventure (starring James Brolin as Pee Wee Herman) is one of the most contextually bizarre moments in a film there has ever been, IMO.

anyone else here a fan?

(I know you are, but what am I?)

Oh, of course I am --
I used to know a lot more about this film, but haven't thought about it or talked about it in so long, that I've forgotten a lot of the cool trivia about the making of it that I used to know --
Anyway, I like the fact that it's the same actor who plays the head biker in the biker bar scene who plays the fat rich kid who orders Pee Wee's bike to be stolen.
I used to work with an actor named Buddy Erdos, who was Pee Wee's standin on some "personal appearances" when the real Pee Wee was otherwise engaged.  Erdos also played Bogart in the John Goodman Babe Ruth movie.  Erdos could do a Paul Rubens impression that would astound you.
Rubens also played Danny "The Penguin" DeVito's dad in one of the Keaton Batman films --

I saw this movie when I was a kid in 1986 and it got me heavy into prank items.
After seeing it, I became a regular at Spencer Gifts (http://www.spencersonline.com/).

I bought whoopee cushions, bottled bad breath, invisible ink, fake turds, fake vomit, fart spray, stink bombs, a joy buzzer and of course, trick gum.
(yes, I actually bought a fake turd.  I was 12 years old...what can I say?)

This movie is awesome and filled with some great lines like when Pee Wee picks up that doll in Mario's Magic Shop and says,
"How do you like school Billy?
Closed!"

"Why don't you make me?
No, why don't you make me?
Because, I don't make monkeys, I just train 'em!"

"I'm here to see Francis!
Francis is busy.
Busy doing what?
He's having his bath.
Oh, really?  Where are they hosing him down?!"

I love this movie!  I watched it all of the time when I was little and I still watch it a couple of times a year.  I think it was the first DVD I ever bought, and I watched it three times in a row (the second time was with the Burton/Reubens commentary, and the third with Elfman commentary).

I recently went to a midnight show of this and it was a lot of fun.  People were cracking up and quoting in appropriate places, and when Pee-wee's on the payphone in Texas and sings, "The stars at night, are big and bright," and the passerbys clap and finish the tune, at least half of the people watching clapped in unison with the movie and sang "deep in the heart of Texas!"

cool... but presumably those stand-ins didn't include his appearances on Letterman ?!?!

@Pilgerman, my brother's got it on DVD but there aren't any commentaries.
maybe there was a re-released version.  if so I need to get it!

Every once in a while I'll get the urge to watch the "Large Marge" scene.  I usually end up walking out to the living room and forcing my roommates to stop whatever they're doing so I can watch it.  Not the rest of the movie, just the "Large Marge" scene from start to finish, sans context.

It's also a fun scene to pull out at parties.

PWBA is one of those must have movies. I watch it 2 or 3 times a years. It's also a great party film that you can go about having a get together and play it in the background and everyone has seen it enough to catch the really funny parts as the enture film is a riot.

I still use is "WHAT? ... Your breaking up on me? .... WHAT? ... I got to go now! ... Can't hear you!" CLICK.

Can you say ADOBE?
Adobe ....
GREAT!

Is it the Region 1 release?  If so, it should have the commentaries.

I LOVE THIS FILM!!!!!

I have seen it 30 times or something. I can remember most of the lines. It's brilliant.

If i have a girl over to watch a film, it's always Pee wee's big adventure, and i havent had one who didnt like it!!!

I love every scene in it, every bit of dialogue is funny. I love Paul Reubens. Also a big Playhouse fan here.

"Let's talk about your big butt"

"I remember.... the Alamo!"

"WAS THAT SOMETHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE REST OF US, AMAZING LARRY?"

"i'm a loner Dotty.... A rebel"

Pee Wee's Big Adventure is one of my all time favorite movies. I love it even more as an adult in my early 30's as it truly speaks to the inner child in all of us.

The chase through the studio at the end is my favorite part. Godzilla and Santa Claus crashing into Twisted Sister? Awesome! :)

I love that movie.  I recently picked up the DVD to watch with my kids since they are hooked
on Pee Wee's Playhouse.

We had a chance to stop by the road-side attraction with the dinosaurs but there was no mention of the movie, just a sucky
creationist/anti-evolution gift shop.

I bought the doll and the chair from a Goodwill store once...many years ago.The lady behind the counter made some kind of comment like-"Oh,your kids will love it".She gave me an oddball look when I told her I didn't have any kids.

I couldn't tell you how many times I watched this movie.  I haven't seen it in over ten years and could probably still repeat it word for word.

I remeber being six years old and watching this the first time it came on TV. I was so excited because I got to stay up past my bed time to watch the whole thing. :bouncegiggle:

I was also suprised to hear the high-school kids on the bus the next morning quoting lines from the movie and laughing hysterically. Didn't they know Pee-Wee Herman was for kids, not them. :hatred:

Showed it to my nephews a couple of years ago, and they loved it.

This masterpiece gave the world the greatest of all lines for when you trip, wipe out, crash your bike, etc.: "I meant to do that!"

I was watching a millennial reacting to Pee Wee's Big Adventure on youtube and yeah, he seemed very very confused. He thought the movie was funny but also very strange. He didn't understand the large marge bit until she said the famous line "tell 'em Large Marge send ya". He recognized that.
