Title: How geeky are you?
Post by: dean on January 31, 2007, 07:33:42 AM

Well, maybe not a game as such, but hey, it's something to pass the time!

After reading some of that 'what do you collect' thread, I got to thinking about those of us who spend our time on the internerd.  So I figured, why not get to know your fellow board members' darker sides.  Their geekier/nerdier side.

Sure some are obvious, but how about we all get to know some of our embarrassing quirks/little things that make us tic.

Basically I want to hear about your nerdier moments.  I know you have them!  Maybe something we don't know, or maybe elaborate on something we already know!

I'll start it off:

I'm geeky because I quoted part of Bilbo Baggins' speech from Fellowship of the Ring as part of my thank you for my 21st.

I think I confused some people...

I'm geeky because I make stupid science or computer related geeky jokes all the time.  There's other reasons, too, but that's the one I'll share.   :twirl:

I have been doing my best to keep my children from being afraid of wildlife, including insects and spiders.  We often get spiders in the house and I catch them with a VHS slipcase and put them outside.  Jenna has done it a few times (she will be 4 in April).

However, last week we had a very large wolf spider in the house while I was at work.  Katie says it was as large as the big spider (either a fishing spider or thin-legged wolf spider) that we found in GA.  It was on the outside of the screen and Katie put her hand on the inside.  Its legs covered her palm palm.  Anyway, the kids were scared of such a large spider - Katie had to put it outside.

We do something similar - spiders get set outside.  About the only small creature my daughter cannot stand is ants - she's been bitten a few too many times (our red ants here leave good welts, as well as hurt for about two days).

My brain is big repository of trivial knowledge and memories that only come out when some unlucky person actually acts interested. Some times I even catch myself wondering how hell I know this stuff.

I'm pretty good at Trivial Pursuit (The Original Series).

I once migrated my old library's website from a Windows NT webserver to Red Hat Linux (version 4.x, IIRC).  I think that counts as geeky.

TAKE THE GEEK TEST (http://www.innergeek.us/geek.html)

Susan posted this test here in 2004 and if I remember correctly, quite a few people took it.
You'll want to take version 3.1.

Post your results here.

23.27416% - Geek

Which is probably down from the past. Still a recovering fanboy, not a former one I guess. OTOH, some of the things I clicked on are past tense and wouldn't apply now, like TV shows I watch.

I have a Rubik's Cube only because my mom saved one and put it in a jar with lots of other items from my childhood and gave it to me recently, I didn't own one for roughly twenty years, haven't touched this one actually.

Then again, if I had a dollar for everytime someone has said I should try out for Jeopardy, I wouldn't need the prize money. Plus when the girl I I've been hanging out with a bunch lately told me it was too bad I didn't play chess, I was genuinely disappointed and wished I had the patience to learn when I was younger. All my life people have said I "have" to play chess, they are certain I play and just lie about it to mess with them.

I gotta 22,so I'm just a run of the mill geek.I'm more of a BAD MOVIE/horror film geek, more than anything.Does owning more books and magazines than CD's count? I have TONS of books, almost 98% non fiction. Half of them horror movie reference books, ufos, true crime, and cryptozoology,as wll as tons of crossword puzzle books. And HP Lovecraft is one of my favorite authrs, along with Robert Heinlan. And I wear a wore out courdaroy jacket every day to work. And a fishing hate with a Dead Kennedys pin on it and....plastic black framed glasses with non-tinted lenses! I didn't realize what a dork I really am untill just now...I think I'll go kill myself now.

Cheer up RC!

By the way Yaddo...you don't know how to play Chess?
I do, but I'm not very good at it.

Usually, I have a lot of patience when it comes to games and gaming in general and will even compliment the opposing player if he or she makes a good move.
But there's just something about Chess that really sets me off when I lose or even know that I'm probably going to lose.
I can't explian it.
No other game makes me more angry than when I lose at Chess.
I think that's why I avoid playing it.

I got the following from that test:

30. 96647% - Total Geek.

Was surprised I didn't score higher.

I've been called a geek for knowing more about B movies, classic movies and sci-fi, fantasy and horror films in general than most people I attended classes with from low school through college. Also because I constantly read comic books, Wizard and other comic book magazines, Science Fiction magazines including those that published short stories and more of the same. And because I knew more about pro wrestling at one time than anyone else I went to school with and wasn't in the least bit ashamed of that (I would be given today's wrestling though). Also because I said I was open to the possibility that UFOs might have some basis in reality and because I believe in ghosts from personal experience.

JaseSF

Alot of people are open to the possibility that UFO'S might have some basis in reality and believe in ghosts. Can you tell the story of the ghost or is it too personal? I haven't seen ghosts but I live in my grandmothers house and alot of times I can smell her perfume, now I feel a little nuts writing this, but too bad, it's true. My daughter has also smelt it. It's very strange. Also my grandmother told me,when she was still alive that she saw my grandfather sitting on the bed as clear as day and he had been gone (not alive) for a couple of months. She has been gone since 1984 and still this happens. Not my grandfather sitting on the bed but the perfume. :buggedout:

I'm pretty geeky because today when i got to school, i went outside to the court (not basket ball related. its just a huge, concrete slab that is underneath a catwalk) and etched with my feet the words "DONT PANIC" into the snow on the ground in reeely big letters. Since this morning Ive been asked about 2 dozen times what it means and why the hell i did it.

I think i would be clasified more as a "nerd" as oposed to a geek.

I scored 33.53057% - Total Geek.  But I think that is a bit low, in addition to having multiple Rubik's Cubes -two block, three block and four block ones, I also have a Rubik's cube calendar (change the date dealie).
That should be extra points.

And why couldn't I cut (ctrl c) & paste (ctlr v) the score?

I don't like to talk about the ghostly event because to be honest, I don't want to risk ever seeing it again.  I know that perhaps sounds crazy but I have this weird feeling discussing it will somehow stir it up again.

I tried this at work a couple times, only had one response from a customer who said "Don't forget your towel", my co-workers asked what that was all about, when I said Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, they asked if that was from the Discovery Channel, our receptionist set them all straight by saying it was a movie for nerds and geeks.
Tomorrow when I get in I'm going to show them my test results and proudly assume the role of Office Geek.

Part of my screenname here should reveal I'm a Douglas Adams geek.

Nope, Ash, I've been taught the moves of the various pieces and some basics, but not to any level that I would say I know what I am doing if I were to play a match. By all rights it should appeal to me, but it doesn't. Since I look at it as an abstraction of tactics and warfare, and it has rules, but to me warfare has no real rules in the end, chess seems pointless.

Last night the girl ( the same one who plays chess) and I watched Holy Grail with some friends of hers. One friend was a Python geek like me, why couldn't I have met a girl like that when I was in still college, we even both like the Marx Bros. and Red Green! But the one I like didn't really like it that much, her sense of the absurd just doesn't go that far I guess. This was her second attempt to watch it. Plus she had trouble hearing the dialogue, which couldn't have helped.

I scored a 33.53057% - Total Geek, which I know for a fact is too low. I think I should get extra points for being offended at not scoring higher  :teddyr:. I'm not totally inept in social situations, but I avoid them more often than not, just because I despise small talk. I also hate sports, so I can rarely find anything to say to men in this area, and, well, I am a geek, so women find very little to say to me. I have many more obscure movies than are on their obscure movie list (Forbidden Zone, The Godmonster of Indian Flats, and the entire three-season collection of Gilligan's Island, among others). I teach English lit classes. I didn't have a date in high school. At all. And I'm proudly proclaiming it on the internet. Maybe I'd better just shut my pie hole now  :tongueout:.

Off the cuff (no reading wikipedia or other sites to answer):   what is the difference between a geek and a nerd, if any?  (I'm talking in terms of modern usage of the term.)

According to my nurse, who has two teenagers, "geek" is a pejorative term meaning an unclean techno-obsessive type who has greasy hair, poor hygiene, inept social skills, etc.   "Nerd" is a kind of cool character with skills and wit, a desirable trait, not pejorative.

In my experience, "geek" has more to do with social skills (or rather lack thereof), while "nerd" has more to do with an overabundance of mental ability. These characteristics do fluctuate, though; sometimes "geek" just means a person who is a fanatic about some pop culture/technological thing (Best Buy's Geek Squad, for example, or a movie geek, a music geek, etc.). And sometimes "nerd" means basically the same thing. In the latter sense, neither term is pejorative. In the first, both often carry a negative connotation. As you know, language is sometimes imprecise, and people don't really think about what they are saying, so the definitions of words change over time. These days, I'm not sure there is any real, appreciable difference between the terms "geek" and "nerd."

P.S.--Do I get any extra Nerd Points for my answer?  :teddyr:

I always thought the actual definition of a geek was someone that bites heads off chickens in carnival side shows.. so I never really use the term because of that.
If I was going to take the modern definition of geek and nerd, I kind of thought it was the opposite of what Derf explained - where a Geek is more the science/book/fact/trivia obsessed guy and a Nerd is the RPG/sci-fi/horror/school supply obsessed guy and the major difference being that you do not have to be smart to be a nerd but you do have to be smart to be a geek, and you can be a combination of both.

I'm not too sure about geeky, but I have a very embarrassing querk....BIG BLACK FLYING BUGS. I love being outside and doing yard work. I know my neighbors think I have fits at various times. I'll just be working around the yard, watering (a very relaxing job) and all of the sudden I'll start running around, arms waving around like a spase, screaming and laughing at the same time because I know I must look funny and nobody else can see the GIGANTIC,FLYING,BLACK,BUG, that sounds like a B-52 in my face. Many times I have come running into the house screaming and laughing afraid to go back out because I KNOW THAT THING IS OUT TO GET MEEEEEEE.
:bouncegiggle:  Been there, done that, particularly the laughing part with the big hairy bug buzzing in your face...  I find a mouse in a trap I yelp: Ohwp!   Thanks for the laugh.

I have been doing my best to keep my children from being afraid of wildlife, including insects and spiders.  We often get spiders in the house and I catch them with a VHS slipcase and put them outside.  Jenna has done it a few times (she will be 4 in April).

I've always been a bit afraid of spiders (having been bitten many times) but I appreciate their work - they don't want to eat us, they just want to eat the things that do!  I always shoo away small spiders in my house, won't vacuum them up, and catch them routinely to release outside if they're large.
