Title: Recent DVD Purchases Post by: Andrew on February 01, 2007, 08:37:45 PM I had a bunch of stuff come in lately, quite a few were budget Amazon buys (buy 3 get 1 free - at $8 each) and such.
Galaxina, 25th Ann Edition Femalien Abby Bloodsucking Pharoahs in Pittsburgh Demons/Demons 2 Crocodile The Gate Videodrome Die Monster Die / The Dunwich Horror Eve of Destruction Mansion of the Doomed (a thread here put it on my mind) Starchaser (again, a thread here - damn you all) Billy the Kid vs Dracula (to do a cooperative review with Ken Begg) Title: Re: Recent DVD Purchases Post by: Scott on February 01, 2007, 08:46:01 PM Three films that I'd like to see from that list are:
Galaxina Die Monster Die The Dunwich Horror Title: Re: Recent DVD Purchases Post by: Torgo on February 01, 2007, 08:47:43 PM I've got the Criterion edition of Videodrome that is most excellent.
The part I always remember from Demons is the wondrous Deus Ex Machina in the form of the helicopter-through-the-ceiling scene. The Gate is a cheese classic but the sequel blew chunks big time. Title: Re: Recent DVD Purchases Post by: Scott on February 01, 2007, 08:53:45 PM Billy the Kid vs Dracula.........Yikes............Saw this one along with the same directors other smash hit Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter.

I got a brand new copy on eBay for $6.66 (the price includes shipping). I've been wanting to see this and it was dirt cheap so I thought I'd give it a go.

I got a brand new copy on eBay for $6.66 (the price includes shipping). I've been wanting to see this and it was dirt cheap so I thought I'd give it a go. What is on the limited edition? I have a copy of the film I picked up at K-Mart when I bought my DVD player, it was one of the first five discs I bought ( I already had some cheapo bin public domain discs). One of my all time favorite films. Although I did think that intro from Richard Rush on the disc I have was pointless and talked down to the audience, glad I can skip past it. Seen Die Monster Die & The Dunwich Horror nice artifacts of their time, but nothing special. Eve of Destruction is okay, guess I expected more. Plus Gregory Hines- good actor in drama and comedy, great dancer, not an action hero. I had the Demons films on tapes from a closing store. Got rid of them in the move, wish I still had them. The virtual plotlessness and lack of characterization of really anybody actually drew me in. Like the people making them said to the audience, " We don't care about these characters and neither do you, so here's the mayhem. Plus the intro of the gang in the first one for fresh meat, and the driving around of the gang in the second only to have them have nothing to do with anything. So cynical I can almost admire it. Just wish they had done more with the shots of the possessed people massing and silhouetted with their eyes glowing. Actually unnerving when it was used in both films. Made me stop laughing and shaking my head when I would see it. Title: Re: Recent DVD Purchases Post by: Jack on February 02, 2007, 08:42:36 AM The Gate is a cheesy old favorite of mine. Lately I've mostly been watching those 10 movies for $11 sets from Brentwood. Ever read a book that was so bad that it made you want to become an author because you couldn't possibly do worse? That's sort of the feeling I get watching these movies.

It's two discs, but I think the first disc is exactly the same as the single disc edition. The second disc has a documentary called The Sinister Saga of Making "Stunt Man", which is also sold individually, but I hear it's not that great. Title: Re: Recent DVD Purchases Post by: Andrew on February 02, 2007, 04:32:21 PM I watched "Galaxina" last night to start working on the review (and stayed up until about 0100 doing that). The new print is good, better than the Rhino DVD release. However, I am wondering about the widescreen bit. Some things still looked chopped, so I am wondering if it is just hacked full screen. If I get a chance tonight, I will try to compare the two DVDs.
"Blue Star." - "Aaaahhhhhhh!" "Abby" is indeed the alternate "Exorcist" and an entertaining film. I have not seen it in years (since the kind webmistress of WilliamGirdler.com hooked me up with it), but I look forward to watching the DVD. Had watched "Demons" over the course of two nights, Tuesday and Wednesday. It is a fun movie and quite well done for what it is. The scenes with the creatures emerging from the darkness, walking up the stairs, or coming out of the fog with their glowing eyes were a nice touch. The one girl, the black-haired friend of the main female character, had an absolute elfin look to her. If they had made "Lord of the Rings" twenty years ago, she would have been a good choice for Arwen. The helicopter plummeting through the ceiling was a hilariously funny moment. Title: Re: Recent DVD Purchases Post by: Fausto on February 02, 2007, 07:40:21 PM If Galaxina is the film I'm thinking of, then I hated it (or was too sober to enjoy it properly).
Is Videodrome any good? I could never get into Scanners, so I never bothered with videodrome, but I did like the brood. Is Videodrome any good? I could never get into Scanners, so I never bothered with videodrome, but I did like the brood. You probably remember "Galaxina." It tries to be funny, but mostly it falls flat. Do you remember the guy from all the Doritos commercials? (The ones from the 80's.) He was in "Galaxina." I have not seen "Videodrome" in something like 18 years. I remember finding it very freaky, so I am looking forward to watching it again. From the IMDB: Technical Specifications for Galaxina (1980) Laboratory DeLuxe Film negative format (mm/video inches) 35 mm Cinematographic process Panavision (anamorphic) Printed film format 35 mm Aspect ratio 2.35 : 1 So, it should be true widescreen on the DVD. Haven't seen that movie for years BTW. I remember it being cool back in the day. Title: Re: Recent DVD Purchases Post by: Torgo on February 02, 2007, 09:18:45 PM I also found this bit of information, Andrew, for the Rhino Galaxina DVD from a review.
Quote Image Transfer Review: I don't really know what to say about this transfer other than, "what were they thinking?" The image is murky, faded and just poor overall. The contrast is completely off, there is a ton of streaking (check out any of the space sequences with streamers following all the stars—there is no point really analysing the quality here because there is none to speak of. This was obviously mastered off an old analog source, as the transfer is ripe with analog video artifacts. Perhaps if they had run over the source a few times with a truck they could have at least made it look vintage. As for the aspect ratio, here is where it gets interesting. First, this was a 2.35:1 film shot in Panavision, but the DVD is rendered at 1.85:1 (except for two shots, which are at the correct ratio!) Throughout the DVD they are reframing the 1.85 image, sometimes including the full 2.35 frame (resulting in a horizontally squeezed look), other times they zoom into the frame at 1.85:1 (cutting off the edges) and other times they have zoomed into a 1.33:1 image while still using 1.85:1 as the master. Second, the disc is anamorphic, though it was really tough to tell whether this was intentional or not on first viewing, or whether they had originally done a straight transfer from an anamorphic print and zoomed in on it. The film opens with a shaky zoomed in logo which is followed by a section where you actually see them horizontally compressing the picture to fit (most) of the intended width of the frame. The image is a mess, and I have seen better 10-year-old VHS tapes. Bad, really bad! Title: Re: Recent DVD Purchases Post by: raj on February 04, 2007, 06:21:12 PM Andrew, Femalien is not family viewing -- the scene at the end with Jacquiline Lovell and Venesa Taylor -- wow :tongueout: :tongueout: ! Fun little softcore movie, the sequel is just as good/bad.
I need to see Videodrome again. I taped it years ago, then taped over it for some reason, I love Debby Harry. Title: Re: Recent DVD Purchases Post by: Andrew on February 04, 2007, 06:27:23 PM I think that I first saw "Femalien" on late night cable (had to be Skinemax) with a friend, Steve, many years ago. I do all of my movie watching after the kids are in bed. Thought it would be safe to watch "Dogora" when Jenna was around one time. She was scared of clouds for about a week, though I turned it off soon as I saw that she was paying attention to the movie and it was upsetting her.
Planning on making some popcorn and watching "Videodrome" tonight. On the subject of Deborah Harry: she did the singing for the main female character in "Rock & Rule." Not certain if you know about that animated film. Title: Re: Recent DVD Purchases Post by: raj on February 04, 2007, 08:10:39 PM Hadn't heard about Rock & Rule, thanks for the tip.
