Title: Saturn 3
Post by: Andrew on February 03, 2007, 07:43:36 PM
This is Harvey Keitel's brain.  This is Harvey Keitel's brain downloaded into a killer robot that wants to kill Kirk Douglas and woo Farrah Fawcett.  Any questions?

I remember seeing this movie on tv when I was very young - and being pretty scared by the robot. I *was* old enough to see the the appeal of living with some hot blonde chick in a remote research lab, doing pills and each other.

Also, the most recent memory of FF I have is her participation in the shatner roast... women dont age well indeed.

My aunt used to recommend this one to me all the time when I was little. By the time I saw it ten years later, I decided not take recommendations from her for movie.

I love the visual look and design of the film, it clicks with what the idea of "scifi" was to me at one time, however impractical.

At least we know where son Michael gets the cheek to bare his aged backside in[ i]Basic Instinct[/i] from (yes I deserve to be reprimanded for that pun). Daddy Kirk letting his weathered freak flags flap as it were.

Ah Farrah, you were the ideal at one time, now you are a sad footnote from David Letterman's show and lots of Baby Boomer memories of posters and onanism. Oh yeah and that whole Burning Bed thing from the 80s when you briefly convinced people you could act.

Nice review, Andrew.  This one is just plain awful, especially for the Kirk butt moments.  If I recall correctly, Harvey Keitel was mysteriously dubbed in this one for some reason.  At least there were no Keitel dangly bits.  He's known for showing them off shamelessly.

Like in Bad Lieutenant or The Piano?

Darn! There is just something wrong with a film, where Kirk gets naked and Farrah doesn't.

I rented this a few years ago -- not horrible, more ohf a meh.  Biggest thing wrong with it is that Farrah's fun bags were shown far to briefly.

I think that the cast is the right size for the story, but the execution and some basic components of the plot are flawed. Hector's understanding that it is the mirror of a madman was well-placed; they should have explored that angle more.
Spot on.  Great review, Andrew.

Every time I watch this I have the same asinine conversation with myself....Stanley Donen? Stanley Donen! Stanley Donen? Stanley Donen!

And has there ever been any conclusive reason found for dubbing Roy Dotrice's voice for Keitels?  I'm assuming it was the same issue as having a "Judas" from Brighton Beach.

You may have noticed that the novelist Martin Amis was involved in this project. You will find a pastiche of the movie and its principals in his excellent novel 'Money'

I recently saw this movie...pretty bad, but it had one good thing going for it.  The design, particularly  in regards to Hector.  I think he has to be one of the coolest looking robots I've seen from that time period in sci-fi movies, his design apparently based on that of an old Da Vinci painting.

I'm not a big fan of remakes, unless the original movie is in the category of needing a LOT of improvement, which this film falls under.  I think if someone remade this film, updated the look, got slightly better actors, with NO DUBBING, and found a way to make Hector just a bit more mobile, it would probably turn out pretty good.

How about a sequel instead of a remake?  We could continue the story with a 91 year old Kirk Douglas and a 60 year old Farah Fawcett.  If you didn't like Kirk's bare butt back then...  Not sure I'd want to see more of Farah now either.

According to the Wikipidea article the producers didn't like Keitel's Brooklyn accent.

Actually this is the kind of movie that has some good potential as a remake. This could've been a seriously scary movie with the right people making it.

On another note,  your guys need to seriously grow up and quit obsessing over Kirk's naked butt cheeks, this movie has flaws that go way past the cast and their assorted exposed appendages.  (Besides when people protest something too much, it makes me wonder.........)

Well said...Sure, seeing Kirk's bare behind made me a tad uncomfortable, but it wasn't enough to get me ranting and obsessing over the subject.   :tongueout:

Here's a bit of trivia...Roy Dotrice had a daughter named Karen, who's mostly known for playing little Jane Banks in Mary Poppins, before she decided to leave acting when she got older.

Yes. Who would you pick for the sequal, SATURN 3 1/2? No, you can't pick Leslie Neilson.

We've got to get Harvey Keitel back with full frontal nudity this time (that comment was for Trekgeezer  :tongueout: ).

Michael Douglas could take over Dad's part.

And replacing Farah, how about Jada Pinkett Smith in MATRIX REVOLUTIONS mode?

I don't know, I think my review laid out the problems I had with the movie.  One of those was that we have Farrah Fawcett, but only see her naked once.  What does get some screen time instead is one of the bane's of my existence:  naked man ass.

Farrah naked or Kirk naked and what do they pick?  Life is not fair to me.  Not one bit.

You know a movie's gonna suck when Farrah Fawcett gets top billing over Kirk Douglas in the opening credits...

What a great review!  I saw this film when I was very young and it scared me half to death as I remember.  I bought it from Ebay many years later for about £1, which is probably about all it's worth in all honesty, and I've just dug it out of my collection for another.  Despite this film being so obviously poor with a less convincing robot than the Lost In Space Series, I still find it entertaining to watch with idea of the mind of a madman being implemented into a robot intriguing.  The most disappointing thing about this movie is that it not difficult to see that the robot would be so easy to overpower, and despite this they spend half the movie running in different directions...!  One well timed club with a blunt instrument would have sorted old Hector out!
