Title: What do you want for breakfast?
Post by: Menard on February 07, 2007, 08:56:04 AM
A crisp cool morning, snow on the ground, a cupboard filled with all the things I would like for breakfast; too bad that last part wasn't true as I find myself sitting down to a luxurious bowl of oatmeal. Not that I don't like oatmeal, I actually love it, but I find myself thinking about other foods this morning; oatmeal is just a whole lot cheaper.

My favorite meal of the day is breakfast. I would like to have a plate of pancakes, eggs (scrambled, fried, omelet; I don't care, I'll take them all), hash browns or some kind of potatoes, and some soy sausage (I am a vegetarian). I would have veggie bacon, I love the stuff, but it is a pain to crisp it right.

Biscuits and gravy; now that is a meal unto itself. When I was a kid, and before I became a vegetarian, I loved crisp bacon (take whatever you want, I'll take the whole plate of bacon). When I would stay with my grandparents on an occasional visit, my grandfather would get up in the morning and fry up a skillet of bacon and sausage (I didn't care for sausage then; too gristly for me). When he finished with the bacon and sausage, he would make a skillet of gravy to go with the biscuits he just popped into the oven. Eggs were on the agenda too. Breakfast at my grandparent's house was the best breakfast.

Alas, I have oatmeal this morning. That's fine by me, but I'll be thinking of something else as well.

What do you want for breakfast?

I'm not much of a morning person, and would love the time to make myself the perfect breakfast, but that doesn't happen often so I usually eat some plain cereal.

But ask me the ideal homemade, and it's an omlette with a good amount of cheese, bacon on two pieces of toast.  Or the "Replete Breakfast" at this nice cafe joint down the street [they have an awesome breakfast menu: perfect for those lazy sunday mornings]

Orange juice, coffee, ham and cheese omelet, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, of course if my doctor found out about this breakfast she'd really give me hell, but as I've said, man does not live by low cholesterol diet alone.

(I only eat this stuff occasionally anymore, I like it but I also like not having a heart attack.)

We took the day off, so we're headed out RIGHT NOW for a gravy breakfast at an old place downtown. Normally its cereal and coffee though.

Well Menard.

I had
Country Ham
Buttermilk Biscuts
Scrambled eggs cooked in real butter covered in cheese.
Hash Browns
and gravy
Washed down with a pot of coffee ...

Well..........I make a pretty good omelet with egg, ham, cheese, and scallions. Always cooked everything with olive oil.

What I like to do is go to the diner once in a while. We have a diner that serves the "Godfather" omelet which has all  the ingredients of mine, but they make it extra spicy with hot peppers, and it comes with hash browns, big fat sausages, wheat toast, orange juice. My wife will get the pancakes and bacon and we will divide it all up, so we can both have a bit of everything. Good breakfast.

I also make a nice Philippine "Eggplant" its eggplant baked for 40 minutes in the oven then mash it like a potato then cook it again in a frying pan with scrambled eggs on top of the mashed eggplant. Add a little salt.  Wow ! ! !

I thought the remark was funny myself, not an insult. :tongueout:

Jeez, nobody mentioned grits. Actually my weekday breakfast usually consists of a bowl of oatmeal (with brown sugar, cinnamon, and tiny bit of butter), but my favorite breakfast is at IHOP. I usually have the three cheese and ham omlete and short stack on the side.  On the weekends my wife and I usually have pancakes with either sausage or bacon (we usually only get bacon when my son visits).

By the way Menard, I like the little addition to your avatar.

It was suppose to be, I thought you'd take it in the light it was meant. I don't take things personally.
Sorry Andrew for the misunderstanding.

I'd like a couple feet of snow -- so work gets cancelled and I get to go back to bed.

Normally I have a bowl of Cheerios (without milk, thank you very much) and tea with honey.  What would be nice on the weekends is to have a real New York bagel (poppy seed) with cream cheese, salmon and tomato.  And a pot of good coffee -- none of the flavored crap

When the family gathers at Va. Beach for a week in August every year, mom makes pancakes or french toast for breakfast.  Mmmmm, homemade mommade breakfast.

You Arkansan..uh..Arkansawan...uh...oh..whatever they call you. :tongueout:

As a kid, I didn't like grits, but I did kind of like them as I got older. Reminds me of two other breakfast foods that are just as nutritionally worthless, but taste great (seems to go together). I loved Cream of Wheat when I was a kid; I still like it. Another awesome favorite is a bowl of white rice; of course you have to add the milk, sugar and butter (lots and lots of butter).

By the way Menard, I like the little addition to your avatar.

Fits me to a tee. :teddyr:

Hey, if you can't get people thinking (good or bad) then what the point. My name is generally prefaced by an expletive.

Usually, I enjoy a cigarette & a few four-letter-words for breakfast, chased with a splash of stale coffee.
If I have time, I'll fix myself a hotdog, but I prefer finding some leftover pizza laying around.

Since I'm strapped for time in the mournings due to college, I just have cereal (Fruit Loops, Honey Nut Cherrios etc) Bagel or a English Muffin or Waffles with some O.J.

If I'm not going to school like weekend I like to have a omelet or Bacon, Eggs and Toast.

Slighty Off Topic: I remember one time when I ordered Pizza Hut and the Pizza Box said "Have for Dinner Save for Breakfast". I seriously don't want to tell someone I had Stuff Crust Pizza for Breakfast  :bouncegiggle:

I rarely fix breakfast even when I have time, working late shift my day is flip flopped anyway. By the time I get up it's other people's lunch time.

I make a pretty mean fritata if I do say so myself, but it's usually for supper. Haven't had any eggs for a few months maybe time for those or Denver sandwiches. Another good breakfast meal.

I really miss the Saturday morning breakfasts my dad used to make when we were little. Bacon, country ham, scrambled eggs, cubed hash browns (sometimes with sausages, eggs etc. mixed in instead of separate eggs), grits, toast. Ate so much I only wanted two meals a day. Didn't care how late we ate dinner after that, since I was good and full until at least 8 that night. It'd be nice but couldn't eat that way too often nowadays.

I do have a hankering for cold supreme or veggie lover's pizza lately on a weekend morning. With some of that muscadine wine I've been buying too much of at the grocery store lately. Might have to feed that urge one weekend morning soon.

I love Burger King's "Sausage, Egg & Cheese Croissan'wiches".

I rarely eat them but when I do, I can never eat just one...I've always gotta buy two.
And I love 'em with a big glass of ice water or orange juice.

I could eat pancakes anytime of the day. I usually like my pancakes swimming in maple syrup for a nice pancake soup.

I used to love the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuits from Hardee's. No road trip or vacation drive was complete without one of those and a huge coke before leaving the city limits, hash brown triangles also if I splurged.

I picked one up before a road trip a few ago after not having one for about five years. The magic was gone. Just greasy and nasty. Myabe it was a one off bad one. But not going to give it another try.

You guys are priceless, no matter how bad my day has been I can always find something here to cheer me up   This just happened to be the thread I was reading when I decided to share that thought with you all.

Another breakfast I love, but seldom have anymore is steak and eggs with hash browns and toast. :teddyr:

That's why it's gotta have peppers and onions. They are so crisp and cool after all night in the fridge. I'm becoming a fan of pineapple on pizza now also.

Scott, you're right, I like pizza, we usually get it for dinner when watching movies and I must say it tastes great for breakfast the next morning. Always feel kind of guilty eating it for breakfast though.

Growing up we pretty much had hot breakfast all the time: biscuits, gravy (with crumbled beef), eggs, bacon, ham, hash browns, sausages, pancakes with bacon, coffee, milk. Cereals or oatmeal only occasionally.

My eating habits have changed over the years. I still enjoy a hot breakfast now and then, but my breakfast these days usually consists of two slices of cinnamon-raisin toast with margarine and a cup of white tea (my fave) and German white honey.

A glass of juice to get it started. Then two eggs scrambled. A breakfast steak cooked medium rare. Home fries. Toast w/ butter and jam. And a glass of ice tea w/ lemon. But, on my retirement salary, I couldn't afford it. So I had a bowl of oatmeal w/ skim milk, instead.

Well, Robert, my friend, isn't this what they call timing?  Some newer member'd necromanced an old thread of yours, something I've done with many a thread, but am now extremely reluctant to do, and, "Menard", right when we should all swear one another off, it does strike me as ironic.  Let me tell you, it doesn't hurt one bit, so don't let it bother you, but don't also burn bridges.  Personally, this year has left me numb; inured to pain.

I'm not so crazy about breakfast.  Because I like to cut cost I just buy cheapo cereal.  But a good hot bowl of Cream Of Wheat with maple syrup and brown sugar is pretty nice once in a while.

If I had to pick the perfect breakfast, how about a large chicken fried steak with country gravy, with bacon, link sausage and a cup of the previously mentioned Cream of Wheat.  And a glass of tomato juice.

Rev, you should know that smoking is BAD!

It's only bad for your lungs and longevity.  It's tasty for breakfast!  I joke, but seriously, kids, don't smoke.  Take it from your Uncle Rev! *cough*  The cigarette habit  is expensive and will seriously cut into your beer budget!

If I could have the breakfast I want it would be an omlette with ham, bacon, sausage, cheese, tomatos, bell peppers, and onions with some Tabasco sauce on it with a side of grits, biscuits, and a cup of Earl Gray tea.
Granted I also would settle for pecan pancakes with a ham steak and Earl Gray tea as well.
Too often it's cold cereal and milk around here because I don't feel like cooking in the mornings.

We're in the middle of this blizzard, so I made some of my patented "Daddy's Pancakes" with chopped almonds added to the special recipe, along with sausage, and eggs in a frame/omelets (per child's request).  All of this with juice and milk.  Then we all headed out to play in the snow.  The kids played, mommy and I shoveled.
