Title: What kind of jobs have you had?
Post by: Poogie on February 09, 2007, 02:40:05 PM
I was just sitting here thinking of all the jobs that I have had and wow there's alot. To top things off I'm a jinx! Most of the places I've worked for went out of business.  :buggedout:
Painted murals on the windows of stores and a hamburger stand. Hamburger stand went out of business.
Did some art work for a magazine, went out of business.
Cooked, and painted a mural in a restaurant, which was also a pool hall, went out of business and was torn down.
Painted a giant "Gorilla Girl"on canvas, for Circus Vargas (a traveling circus), I Think they're still around.
Worked at Zody's (a retail store like K-Mart), went out of business.
Worked at Marshall Ind.(electronics,computers). Tell you about that later on in this list.
Went to an acting school, went out of business.
Worked as an actress for one movie.
Worked as a mom, this never goes out of business.
Worked at a florist delivering flowers. Still in business.
Worked at Marshall Ind. again, went out of business.
That's some list and 6 places I worked for went out of business. Is that telling you anything?  :buggedout:  :bouncegiggle:  :bouncegiggle:
Does anybody else have a list of jobs? Or what kind of jobs have to done?

Let's see, I have been:

A busboy, waiter, dishwasher and cook, all at the same restaurant
A general grunt/cook at a fast food restaurant
A snack stand attendant
A security guard
A grunt for a landscaper
A grunt for a lawn maintenance company
A grunt for a snow ski rental company at a ski resort
A grunt for a logger
A freelance photographer
A cop/crime scene investigator and arson investigator
A chemist in various positions: forensic chemistry (both local and federal government levels), EPA contract lab, industrial quality control, teaching, academic research
Owned my own consulting business

Some of those 'grunt' jobs were in my 20's and 30's, so not all of them were teen-type jobs.  I have never really worked in what you'd call a true "retail" setting.

I've only had one job so far( lucky me), since i've just begun working a little. I worked for a few months last year, from summertime to november, at a farm. Just a vegetable-fruit-food farm, no animals besides a farm cat. I washed mostly lettuce all day, working with a sharp straight bladed knife/razor (oh yeah, you always get cut withen your first week of that job. i cut into my thumb and it didnt heal for about a month, no lie. and the bledding wouldnt stop, even with papertowls and pressure for 5 minutes, its still streamed out. and i couldnt even hold the knife anymore caus eit hurt so much) But i got real wet and soaked there, and i hate that feeling all cold and wet. I saw some reaaaall nice cars though, like some nice Cadillacs and a Fleetwood, mostly convertables, i would run into osmething and drop things whenver i saw the cars, because i was in such awe. and also the giant hot air ballon that went right over the roof. I dont know where i will work this summer, perhaps a VHS and DVD factory place. a small place that makes VHS and DVD and puts the movies on them. not really any well-known movies though. Hi-Speed Video is the place.

Starting out working on my grandfathers farm from the time I could walk.
Decided to something easier so I joined the Marine Corps.
Went college and worked as a bouncer in strip clubs.
Moved and continued college and worked as a 3rd Shift Stupidvisor in a huge factory. (Nearly 500 on the shift.)
Finished college and worked as a Engineer for Mitsubshi Machine Tools (Automated/Robotic Assembly Lines)
Finally got burned out travelling internationally for 48-50 weeks a year for many years and became a independent contractor doing the same thing, just a lot less of it.
Started investing in real estate, flipping houses while still contracting a little.
Still do a very little consulting/contracting work, but mainly I'm an oppressive slum kind and understanding landlord and own a property improvement company. I also have an art studio and gallery but rarely get time to enjoy them.

But the most important job I've have, had the worst pay and that is husband and father.

Nothing quite like telling the world your whole work history.....................

Shovelling Snow - When I was about 10 years old I made $24 dollars in one day after a snow storm in Horseheads, New York.

Vineyard - In the spring they would hire and bus local kids from the community center in town and we would tie grapevine branches to long wire support fence that stretched forever. Loved it as we had to work fast because they would send the slow ones home and if they didn't like your work you couldn't come back. We would be out there so long on the finger lakes of New York State that we got wind burn on our faces.

Mowing Lawns - Mowed lawns for people around town. Those who were interested could get all kinds of work through the community center where we would hang out at night playing ping pong or getting ready for the next air guitar contest the High School was putting on. Then get pizza next door at New Yorks famous Pudgies Pizza.

Army Reserves - Join the Army Reserves at 17 years old in 1982 and went to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri for basic training where I had some kind of swelling of the ankles that put me in the hospital for 3 weeks and was eventually sent home after no explanation of what it was. It was a split training program where I was to do basic training after 11th grade and then go back home to finish 12th grade then return to advance training for my M.O.S., but it didn't work out. It's believe my ankles swelled up as a result of the vaccines they gave the day before. Anyway a Lietenant from the company gave me the option of staying to finish basic training with a new company and miss my 12th year of High School or leaving with a general discharge. In the end they gave me an honorable discharge instead of a general discharge. Not sure why. Had bad dreams about not finishing the program for a whole year after leaving. I was told by my Drill Instructor in private that I should get a medical discharge before leaving and said if I did decide to leave that I shouldn't tell anyone I was in the army, but back then I sensed it was because I didn't finish, but perhaps he meant something else.

Receiving Clerk - Went to work for a screen printer in the receiving department where I excelled and was in charge of all goods coming in. Providing reports for all departments as to what goods came in, so they could be scheduled for printing. We printed T-shirts and after work I made extra money transporting rock concert T-shirts to big shows in Philadelphia or the airport to further destinations.  Worked they for two years from $2.35 hr. to a salary of $275 a week which was good for my first full time job. Was offered by some roadies to go on the road for this big company and make $1,100 a week selling T-Shirts at the big arenas around the country. One of the bosses came down to interview me and I told them something to the effect "I'll do a good job, won't miss work, I don't drink, or do drugs." then he said "I can use you then" and that was the end of that. Which I'm better off not having gotten the job. It would have ended badly with some sick people.

Taxi Driver - Drove taxi in Atlantic City for four years at night. Great money at first then it turned sour. Towards the end I was robbed twice. Once at knife point and the second time at gun point. Besides that I met some people in my cab like Roberto Duran (he passed gas in my cab), Lawrence Taylor with his accountant, Verne Gagne former AWA World Champion and promoter, Sgt. Slaughter, Hacksaw Butch Reed, Larry Zybysco, Sam Houston, Honky Tonk Man. Biggest tip was $100. Would get fares to Philadelphia and New York City.

Dietary Aide - Basically a waiter, dishwasher, and other kitchen duties. Working in a nursing home was fun and one of my better jobs.

Mr. Mom - Did this for a couple years as my wife makes 3 times what I make and it didn't make any sense to pay total strangers to watch our daughter at the time. In the end this isn't really a good idea as you need to work and pay taxes. If for nothing else, but to maintain a good work history. Then again maybe it was for the best. I don't regret it.

Change Person - In these beach towns of New Jersey there are a number of opportunities to make change at casinos or arcades. Boring.

Lot Attendant/Cashier - This was a good job, but it was only temporary full time filling in for 3 months for an injured employee.

Security Guard - The job itself is good for the most part. It can be rewarding helping out people. You won't get rich though. Been doing this for 13 years now. It's state type employment with decent benefits, so I decide to stay.

As you can see I work only high end jobs.

Let's see...

Yogurt shop flunkie
Newspaper delivery (to paper racks and stores rather than home delivery)
Landscape and maintenance worker
Electronic assembly line worker
Shipping clerk/warehouse worker
Meat cutter
Driver for sprinkler supply company
Long haul big rig truck driver (been damn near everywhere in the US)
Driver for intermodal company (picking up and delivery containers from railroad yards and the Port of Oakland)
Driver for welding supply company - delivered gas cylinders (great company that got sold and dissolved)
Driver for food delivery company (work was too hard to retire on)
Driver for plant/shrub nursery (very few hours)
Driver for freight company (very low pay)
Driver for another freight company (worked nights...yuck)
Driver for oil and fuel distributor (great company but I had to change jobs when they shut down the location I worked at)
Driver for different oil and fuel distributor (best place I have worked ever. Great pay and hours, plus cool and efficient people.

Since 1996 all my jobs have been as a delivery driver. That is when I went to truck school and once I got my over the road experience out of the way, went through several local jobs before finding one I like. At this point, I have no plans to leave the company I am with...unless I win the lottery.

Let's see here.... I'm only 23 (going on 24) so I haven't had the job experience of most of you guys, but here's my work history thus far:

Before I was legally able to work I did a lot of lawn mowing, leaf raking, and snow shoveling. At age 16, I got a work permit and started work at a Bavarian Pretzel Bakery. Crappy pay, but it had one excellent benefit: All the soft prezels I could eat! After 2 years there, I quit and moved onto what I thought would be, a dream job.

I next worked at Suncoast Motion Picture Company for a little over 8 months before getting fired for allegedly being a thief. It's a long story, but to cut it short, I was basically strongarmed into signing something I probably shouldn't have and blacklisted from working at Suncoast or any affiliated stores in perpetuity (at least until Best Buy sold Suncoast back to the Music Land Group). Funny part is, the manager that got me canned was soon unemployed herself. And I know for a fact that various other employees in the past took quite a few things with them and never even got a slap on the wrist. I was pretty quiet back then and afraid to say anything, and boy did I suffer the consequences.

After that I worked at A&W / Lohn John Silvers as a busboy, cook, and microphone operator for nearly a year. The only thing I never could do there was run register. (Luckily I escaped from that hellhole and came up here to Susquehanna PA when my folks moved.) Note to anyone that goes there, do not eat the hotdogs. One day I dropped a bucket of them on the kitchen floor and the manager picked them up and WASHED THEM OFF IN SOAP AND WATER, THEN COOKED THEM AND SERVED THEM TO PATRONS!

Once up here I landed a job as a video store clerk (at VIDEO KING) and lasted there for a little over a year, when suddenly I was FIRED! (Once again under questionable circumstances.) Due to some scheduling conflicts (i.e. they changed the schedule without notifying me) and an alleged "lack in work ethic" (though I stayed off the clock for a half-hour to an hour nearly every night I worked and never complained about NOT getting payed for it), I was given the boot. But here's the ironic part.....

My next job was at a different Video King outlet that was 15 minutes away and I worked there for nearly three years and became great friends with the owner. After a year and a half, he made me (unofficially) a manager, gave me a pay increase, and even took me out drinking on one occasion. I loved the job dearly, but it barely kept my bill collectors at bay so I made the jump to my current job.

I'm now the Night Manager at a local grocery store called "Rob's Market." It has been a very big step up for me (highest pay I've ever had in my life, health benefits, and a 401k plan plus I get paid holidays and a week's paid vacation every year!) though the first 8 months (before the massive flooding we had up here) were very bumpy. I'm pretty happy at this place and have recently gotten a (well deserved) raise. Because of this new job, I've been able to get a decent vehicle (2001 Dodge Dakota) and do a little bit more than just get by.

So yeah, that's about it thus far. I'm still keeping an eye out for my one big break: either I'll get an even better job, marry a rich woman, or win the lottery. The big three!!!!  :teddyr: :bouncegiggle:

I'm only a youngen too [well by comparison with all you old folks here of course  :bouncegiggle:] and my work history's fairly short.

Used to work the odd weekend shift at my grandfather's kiosk at a nearby hospital.  It was great when you're 12 and you're able to earn a bit of money plus score some free snacks.  Sadly, it closed down when I was 16.

First official job was at a bakery as an after-school cleaner [since I don't count the other one].  Stayed for a few years until the shop changed hands.  Out of the 20 staff, I was one of four to stay on right after the change, but they quickly figured it would be easier to hire someone new rather than train me in the way they wanted me to work [plus I was probably too expensive for what they wanted from me].  By that time I was also working out the front serving etc.

On top of the bakery, I also refereed basketball, which I only recently stopped doing.  It had it's ups and downs, depending on the type of game, and, more importantly, the parents who were watching.  I pretty much learnt to have a pretty thick skin, and to not take any guff from someone trying to tell me the rules, when they are clearly wrong.  Luckily I was pretty good at it, and didn't often make mistakes/misjudgments.  Of course, you try telling that to the rabid parents.  I remember I had to kick out a parent/coach you threatened to 'snap me' if I didn't stop laughing at her daughter.  I was having a great game [it was a good contest] but I sure as hell wasn't laughing at her daughter.  Some people are just high strung I suppose.

After realising I needed a bit more cash than the refereeing supplied I searched for another part time job to help me through uni.  Coincidentally I landed a job at another bakery, but within the same overall company [just different franchisees] to which I stayed throughout my uni career.  Worked out the front as the only male [other than the bakers] at the whole store.   This of course means that I still figure I'm somewhat of a girly-man from being good friends with all of them, without any real male influence to guide me properly.

After finishing uni, I had to start thinking about full time work.  At this time I was working a fair bit at the bakery.  Coincedentally, my brother was talking to the owner of the store next to his work, and my [new] boss mentioned they were looking for someone, which lead to me going in, having a chat to them, and getting a job working at a store which sells high end home theatre equipment, mainly speakers.  I sell, deliver and install, and I may not be using my degree at all, but I'm loving the work, and am earning a decent wage, so I'm not complaining at all.

Still not sure how permanent this will be, but so far I'm just glad to be having fun at work, and being able to watch all the good sports on our numerous plasmas and lcd screens.

I was a Police Cadet for NYPD for bit. Its a program that pays for college and pays you. Good pay but I didn't like it so I quit.  Don't confuse this with a regular Police Officer because its not. I didn't spend 6 months in police academy or anything.

Security guard reminded me of my father who was once a securtiy guard for a hospital, which reminded me of a couple of jobs I had when I was younger..I used to mow the lawn of the house across the street from us, but wasn't allowed to use a trimmer, so I had to use those little trimming shears to do the edging along the sidewalk and they lived on the corner.  :hatred: I remember getting paid about 3 bucks.  :buggedout: The other job was about 2 months after my daughter was born, it was at this print shop, mostly envelopes and business cards, on this huge printing press thingy( that's good english). After a couple of Mondays I started drawing the logos for customers business cards and then printed them up, now that I enjoyed.

Hey, that's KINDA where I am now.  I do run my business from my home, but that generally gets done at night.  I take care of my children during the day.

And yes, you guys are right.  Being a Dad is the TOUGHEST job you'll ever love (since we are quoting old commercials...)  :)

I agree it's the toughest job, but fun. I stopped working, for the exception of the print shop which was only on Mondays and it was only for about 4 months. I was a stay at home mom until my daughter was 12 and then I got a job where I could take her to school then get off in time to pick her up, I was lucky. It was hard on us with the money situation but I wouldn't change the experience for any amount of money.   :teddyr:

I put my kids to work so as they were old enough to crawl, you can't beat the cheap child labor. Toilling away in a sweat shop all day while I watch from the air conditioned comfort of the office. Really gives us that father/daughter quality time that they need so much.

Let's see...

I worked on a city maintenance crew at my first job. First day on the job I got to shovel a sewer sludge pit. Then I got moved to putting up street signs. It was a summer job, and I earned enough to buy a nice bicycle.

I worked at a local hamburger place for another summer. They went out of business, but it was nice while it lasted.

Another summer job was at K-Mart (motto: Shop Smart. Shop Somewhere Else). The manager went to my church and hired me to work in the garden department. I moved to the toy department a bit later and then went back to school.

Right after high school, I worked a summer at Whataburger, doing the typical fast food stuff.

During my first two years of college, I worked in an English tutorial lab, helping students with essays and such.

For the next two years of college, I worked in a computer lab (Apple ][es). That's where I began my love/hate relationship with computers.

Right out of college, I got a job with a pottery manufacturer packing pottery for shipment. The owner lied to me, so I quit.

In grad school, I worked as a graduate teaching assistant, teaching Freshman English classes. I also briefly worked with an inventory company, counting grocery store goods.

After grad school, I began teaching English classes part time at a local junior college. I'm still doing that, though not this semester.

I also started working for a business forms printer, doing computer graphics work. I don't get to do much in the way of high-end graphics, but I'm (as far as I can tell, anyway) about the best typesetter in (at least) South Texas. I'm still with that company, though I'll be leaving in the Fall (yes, they know I'm leaving; I want to leave on good terms with them since they've been good to me overall. It's just time for me to move on to something else now).

I'm in school now to become a massage therapist. I plan to do that and teach part time for a while. I will likely go back to school and take some art classes and work toward becoming a better graphic artist, but that is a future job, not one I have already done.

Derf, nice to hear you giving your employer a good heads up upon leaving. Not everyone feels so good about their employers to do such a thing.

Also I think the graphic arts sounds great and about the massage therapist occupation I think you'll do well because you have never rubbed any of us here the wrong way.

That reminds me of a job I had at Angel's home improvement center, worked myself up to assistant manager, being the low man on the totem pole meant that I got to close the place a lot, I had a lot of fun with the closing procedures. I had to make several announcements leading up to the official closing time at which point I would say "Angels is now closed, thank you for shopping and saving at Angels". That got boring after a while so I would do variations like, thank you for hopping and bopping at angels or thank you for stopping and slopping at angels, or flipping and flopping at angels. Another type of announcement was usually made when there would be some customer or customers looking around the lumber yard or hardware store 15 or 20 minutes after the 3 or 4 closing announcements, I would ask the night shift fork lift driver to use the PA system and ask if the yard and store were clear, when I heard this I would reply "the yard and store are clear", he would respond with "RELEASE THE DOGS". The last minute lookie-loos would leave in a hurry at that point. :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:

Strange as it may seem, I've only ever had one job and I have had that since 1989.
I'm a film archivist at the South African National Film, Video and Sound Archives www.national.archives.gov.za (http://www.national.archives.gov.za) and I handle client services.

That is, any person who's looking for film footage relevant to South Africa since 1898 and this great site is my home now since my IT dept. blocked my ass from the IMDB.

Warm greetings to all here!

It seems that back in the 60's it was a place to shoot rather bland films where I suppose those involved just wanted a reason to visit South Africa and shooting a film was perfect. Here are some titles that I have picked up in the past that where all shot in South Africa.

The Jackals (1967) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0061832/) - Vincent Price stars in this film set in the 1800's of a South African abandoned mining town. Not a bad film.

Code 7, Victim 5 (1964) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0058632/) - Lex Barker stars as some kind of do nothing detective "Bond" type character. Great location shots.

The Cape Town Affair (1967) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0061445/) - Starring Jame Brolin and Jacqueline Bisset. The best part of it was seeing scenes from Cape Town, South Africa

Untamed (1955) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048767/) - Actually saw part of this on TV about a wagon train among the Zulu. (not sure this was shot in South Africa)

... this great site is my home now since my IT dept. blocked my ass from the IMDB.

I believe that if you go to http://anonymouse.org/anonwww.html (http://anonymouse.org/anonwww.html) you can get to any site you are blocked from, since I'm not blocked from anything I can not test it. Google "anonymous surfing" or any carnation thereof.

IT workers and employers like to feel like they are little mini-gods ... it's technology, and there is always another technology around it.

Hey, you are right.  That's why I would opt for a the low-tech solution and FIRE somebody for browsing IMDB when they should be working - assuming that is not relevant to their job.  Now Trevor sounds like his job is related to looking up movie information, so why they'd block him from IMDB is beyond me.

It's not about feeling like a mini-God, though - it's about getting what I am paying for: an honest day's work.

Hi Scott.

Yes, unfortunately there were a lot of filmmakers in SA during the 60's and later who took advantage of the natural beauty and the varied locations, not forgetting the fact that SA crews and actors are hard workers but notoriously low paid ones. That unfortunate state of affairs continues to this day.

The NFVSA (National Film Archives) has all the films you mentioned and yes, Untamed with the lovely Susan Hayward was made here in its' entirety.  :teddyr:

:hatred:I really don't know why they blocked me from the IMDB as I get a lot of enquiries from there re SA films and I try to help people on their message boards there. They let me go to places like www.nakedandninety.com (http://www.nakedandninety.com) but the IMDB: No, there be prawnographee!

What, odd jobs?

I've babysat for money, catalogued a dead book collector's library, baked cookies in a shop til they fired me for being thirteen, I subbed for a Jazzercize instructor, I've been a tutor in many subjects, I gave a TED talk to government employees, I've been an office manager, I've brokered art, I've hustled tennis matches, I've been paid for poetry and prose, I've worked on air force bases, sold coupon books, tended a bar for one night in Austin, been paid to sit in at business meetings, and most importantly I've been a SAHM.

These old threads are cool!

I've shoveled stables, taught karate, typed thousands of messages for radio transmission aboard my ship when I was in the Navy.  I've delivered furniture, flipped burgers, written books, pastored churches, taught school, and been a museum educator.

First job I worked on a military base in a department store (PX). I had to check and sign incoming stock deliveries, warehouse stuff, filling shelves and was a cashier. Probably my favorite job of all. I was young, most of my colleagues were young and we had a great time.

My second job wasn't bad either, working in a video rental store for about a year. I had to quit because of shifts which wasn't possible for me to do back then.

Next job was changing bills to coins in a local casino / slot machine place for three years. Followed by three years in a warehouse of a big department store. Then I was a warehouse worker for a food discount store for many years. It was hell and made me sick.
I'm currently employed at a local synthetic material manufacturer. Pretty good job but we work shifts.

My "oddest" job was probably the casino and maybe the video rental one though they didn't seem that odd back then. I was never in a "fill in" job situation or jumping from one marginal employment job to another. While my resume may look boring most provided at least a good and secure income on the long run.

I've either had a job or been in college since I was 14 with the exception of two weeks before I got my current job. Started out babysitting, then a milkman, being a roadie (and worked my way up to a road manager which was awesome fun), done some factory work (least favourite jobs there, but they kept money coming in), a slaters labourer (nice work during the summer holidays, but I did not fancy it in winter. Indeed it was this job that convinced me I needed a steady job with a pension when I saw all the old guys 60+ with their backs done in from decades of labouring still having to work past retirement) and finally my current job which has involved me being an electrician, avionics technician, security guard and many other roles.

My weirdest job offer though is still being offered money to be a hitman by one of my (many) nuts ex-girlfriends. I didn't accept the money to kill her sister though (some guy had tried to chat her up at the cinema and she'd turned him down, but her little sister got the guys number instead and she was outraged that her sister would "move in on her territory" as I was informed in an angry 3 or 4 am phone call).

Ever thought about enrolling in some online college and getting all the financial aid you can and living off it? Buddy of mine funds his comic collection that way. Plus in his case he's convinced he'll die before fifty anyway so doesn't care about the loans. I mean seriously, classes could be useful, extra money, just a thought.

Eh... I'll be fifty in June, Been up to my ears in hock on SSDI since God knows when, Been working with https://www.vadars.org/ (https://www.vadars.org/) for over a year & a half in the inane hope of either finding a job or getting financial assistance  with school, who had eventually signed me up with http://www.thechoicegroup.com/ (http://www.thechoicegroup.com/) back in November, whom I've hear very little from since then.
The the Corona Virus hit...
The biggest hope I have right now is https://buildrva.spaces.nexudus.com/en/ (https://buildrva.spaces.nexudus.com/en/) where I might be able to learn CNC & welding.
