Title: Conan: The Complete Quest DVD
Post by: Scott on February 13, 2007, 11:14:20 AM
Picked up CONAN: THE COMPLETE QUEST DVD for $9.99 at Walmart acouple weeks ago. For the price it's a very very good deal.

On the DVD you have:

  • Conan The Barbarian
  • Conan The Destroyer
  • Conan Unchained: The Making Of Conan (excellent)
  • Feature Commentary with director John Milius and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger
  • Special Effects (only the part with the spirits try to take Conan)
  • The Conan Archives (art work and publicity shots played along with the movie music)
  • Trailers for Both Films

The most interesting thing about the version of CONAN THE BARBARIAN on this DVD is that they show an ending that is really much different than the original theatrical versions we have all seen.

1)

This happens after they battle of the mounds and Conan goes after Phalsa Doom. In the only version I've ever seen the show Conan going up the the Temple quitely slicing the throats of the guards at night till he confronts Phalsa Doom. In the DVD version they add the Kings daughter to this whole scene as she helps distract the guards which helps Conan get past the guards. The girl seems to have had a transformation after Phalsa Doom leaves her chained to the mound stone and attempts to kill her with the snake arrow.

2.)

After Conan chops off the head of Phalsa Doom we remember that Doom's followers in procession all throw their candles into the fountain at the end. This part is taken completely out. In this new ending the Kings daughter is there as Conan hurls the lantern up the stairs catching the temple a fire. Then as Conan comes down from the stairs she bows down before him and he appears to almost pass her by, but he stops and picks her up and carries her gentle(cradle like) into the valley.

Valérie Quennessen and director John Milius

There are also two more smaller additions. One is a conversation between Subatai and Conan before the battle of the mounds and the closing narration I believe was changed in the very last sentence.

It's definately worth seeing this new ending. It might even be better with the kings daughter. The princess has a much bigger non-speaking role. I think it was a better ending. Strange how it's not mentioned anywhere that its a different ending. Has anyone have anymore info on this alternate ending? I'll have to watch it with the audio commentary to find out what John Milius and Arnold have to say about it.

You paid $9.99?
I paid $14.99 for mine.   :bluesad:

I recently watched the documentary on it per your recommendation and it was pretty good.
One thing, in my DVD case, there's a slot for a booklet to go into but mine didn't come with one.
Did yours?

Just checked mine, has slot and no book. Didn't see it listed as having one either, might have been planned but never produced.

Mine didn't have a book either. Check out the movie especially everything after the battle of the mounds and tell me what you guys think.

The version of the first Conan on the "complete quest" flipper DVD is actually the extended international cut of the film.

I do wish that they would have added some extras to Destroyer however even though it is a terrible movie by comparison.   :tongueout:

Thanks for the info Torgo. Didn't know it was the International version. In fact I didn't know there was and International version.

Yeah, here's what the IMDB has to say about the international cut of the 1st Conan:

European version features alternate footage and is slightly re-edited. The first R1 DVD release has the US theatrical cut of the film, while the newer R1 Special Edition DVD adds some deleted scenes and features the longer/alternate international version (130 minutes). There are 4 minutes of additional scenes in the DVD Chapter "Doom's Day" involving the Princess (Valerie Quennessen) where she is shown with Conan entering Doom's Mountain and watching as Conan confronts and kills Thulsa Doom and burns the palace. Conan is later seen to lead her by the hand and then carrying her away. The last sentence of Conan's "A King by his own hand" silent text ending "but that is another story" has been changed to read "And this story shall also be told" and includes a voice over by Mako (Akiro)

In addition to the original ending, the R1 Special Edition DVD adds an intricate scene of dialogue between Conan and Subotai as they prepare before the battle on the mounds.

Yes, Torgo that is exactly how the other version plays. Karma point for you.  I really like the International ending with the princess.

I always did wonder why my DVD had the slot for a booklet, but did not include a booklet. Glad to know I'm not the only one!

With regards to Conan the Destroyer, I like it. Not as much as Barbarian, but it's still a fun little movie and leagues ahead of the Conan wannabes. Plus it has possibly the best, most visually interesting (and musically interesting) opening credit sequence, with Queen Taramis' guards riding across the desert. In my opinion it tops even the first movie's opening with the forging of Conan's father's sword, and Mako's voiceover isn't as stilted. I'll never deny that Barbarian is the better of the two films overall, but Destroyer's opening sequence is just all kinds of awesome.

Oh, and in Barbarian, my favorite scene is definitely the three-way battle between Conan, Rexor, and Thorgrim, to the soundtrack piece "Anvil of Crom." The way it slowly builds up as the three size one another up, then suddenly kicks into high gear as Thorgrim attacks with his hammer, makes it one of my favorite movie fight scenes of all time.

Agreed. If there is one element to Conan the Barbarian that still resonates to this day, it's the booming, thunderous and exceptional score by Basil Poledouris. Not only does it sweep the listener away with its epic Carmina Burana-like feel and almost regal undertones, its more subtle moments lend an incredible amount of emotional drive to the film's narrative.

Use to have an audio tape of Carima Burana and would listen to it often along with my CONAN THE BARBARIAN movie soundtrack tape in the car. Love this kind of music and if you both like the music like I do then check out drum and bugle corps. It powerful stuff. It's beauty with brass knuckles.

Go to http://dci.org/ (http://dci.org/) to get a general idea of what I mean then go to youtube and look up some of the corps. This is not your high school or college marching bands. This is much much more.

I greatly prefer the international cut myself.

So is this International cut also on the Conan Special Edition DVD? Or only on this set?

The special edition DVD is the same one on this flipper DVD with Destroyer being on side B.

You get all of the same extras on Barbarian and it's the international cut as well.

and as some other people have already mentioned on this thread, the soundtrack to Barbarian is one of my top 10 favorite film scores of all time.  Great stuff. I have it on CD.

I recently got this DVD as well (at Wal-Mart for $9.99), it rocks and all, but I wanted to note here that AMC is going to have the full uncut film on this Friday (March 9th) at 8PM EST. Rather cool, sayeth I.

They should pay you to take copies of it, or include it with copies of other films you want.

Stupid annoying Ernie Reyes Jr. whining and pouting his way through the movie. Maybe he's a brilliant actor at playing someone who was supposed to be so awful to watch. Nah, he was a combo of the Supposedly Cute Kid and the Odious Comic Relief, two genre cliches I truly hate.
