I love baseball; I like the subtlety and nuance of the game - the way there's a LOT going on but it does not seem like much upon casual observation.

So that's what you meant by 'port'.

In March, it is basketball.

I liked wrestling years ago, like in the 80s, but it has just gotten too glossed, ridiculous, and frankly boring. I do like wrestling, though, if it involves mud or oil. :teddyr:

I chose baseball.
Growing up in Iowa, it's a given that most people here are baseball fans.

My second choice would be boxing.

Archery, there's a nice outdoor range in the Aroyo Seco park in Pasadena, like to meet my daughter there after work or go with my wife on the weekends and shoot, it's fun to go for a walk and kill the odd hay bale, we get a little bit of exercise and have some fun. My daughter and I ocassionally sing the theme to Robin Hood, Men in Tights while walking from target to target. :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:

Thanks Menard. Missed the typo.

Also, I meant Greco-Roman Collegiate type wrestling.  You would pick a height prejudice sport wouldn't you?

For me it was Baseball, but I don't care much for it anymore. The spirit of the game is lost.

Dennis my daughter also does archery her in New Jersey and my brother In-Law lives not far from Pasadena in Walnut-West Covina area.

Boxing! I usta be a boxing fanatic. But nowadays it's hard to see a good title match without using pay-per-view,so I kinda drifted away from it ...
Would Poker count? I can watch poker for hours...I love to gamble myself...but I'm not a rich man,so I keep the stakes low(pennies, matchsticks, tater chips.)

I suppose it depends on whether it's favourite sport to participate in, or favourite to watch.

I love playing Basketball, and it's easily my favourite sport, but I don't really watch it, or follow all that closely the different competitions.  It's more just a good zen out for me than anything I suppose, since I always feel good after, even if it's a loss.

Also used to play Soccer and Baseball when I was younger [Baseball is pretty unusual in these parts, so that was a nice 'different' sport to play]

On the Playstation/Wii, NFL is lots of fun, so I'll list that, even though I don't play/watch it at all.

But I do love quite a lot of sports in general, and I've pretty much tried all the mainstream ones, and haven't found one I absolutely hated yet, even if I'm not great at most of them.  Everynow and then you'll go golfing with friends, or play a bit of tennis and so on, so it's always very flexible.  Plus good ol' backyard cricket is great when having a bbq...

As for watching, well, nothing beats a bit of lazy cricket on a hot summer day, or a good AFL match (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIfhU0oK_Rw)

The sport I like the best, for now, would be archery. I was pretty athletic in my younger days, tomboy is the word. I would play football, baseball, tennis, bowling (many leagues), bike riding, golf, volleyball, a mean game of badmitten, swimming, track (in junior and high school) and basketball. Okay I'm done......Next.

I was one of the "greats" at dodgeball all through grammer school. If you could have seen me play dodgeball. Was also a big time kickball star.

Added Volleyball and Dodgeball to the list and you can change your vote.

Frisbee is fun.

Dean...when I was in Australia on vacation we had several backyard BBQ's and they tried showing me how to play cricket.
I was totally confused and didn't get it.
It was funny when they said, "You just can't teach Yanks how to play cricket!"
They even tried to show me how to play cricket on the Playstation.  I still didn't get it.
Heck, I had never even heard of cricket until I went down there.

I did enjoy watching Aussie rules football on the TV though.
That was easy for me to understand.
I still have an AFL hat stored away in a box somewhere.

 :twirl:

Mine is definitely cricket ~ I grew up playing the game (still do) and although I know some comic described it as "baseball on valium" it can be and is an exciting game. Soocer is next, I also played it when I was younger and still do.

Although you can describe me as a bit of a nerd (no shame in that) I like sports and the only sport I detest is rugby.

Professional Wrestling (Not a competitive sport but definitely a sporting "exhibition") (That said, I definitely liked it better in the old days when they pretended it was a real competitive sport as that added to the realism of the presentation).

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighting. Can be entertaining when it isn't dull. Can be pretty brutal too.

Boxing. I definitely prefer old-time boxing too. The rules seemed clearer then and the weight classes seemed to be better managed.

Read about her in one of your other posts, while we enjoy the sport, we don't even come close to being in her league. With us it's just a fun hobby, we need lots more practice before entering a competition. Interestingly enough my wife's oldest brother and his wife live in the Walnut-West Covina area too. Meeting my future sister-in-law was interesting too, David couldn't believe it when I told him that his wife and I went to high school together.

I chose baseball, I love the history and all the little things that make it up.   I live for April and all th hopes that it brings, all to be crushed by mid-June, of course.

My grandfather was quite the bowler at cricket, so I have a soft spot there, but I'm darned if I really get whats going on.  And  I  definitely approve of any game where you stop for tea.  And the natty outfits don't hurt at all.

Not a huge sports fan, I have the hand/eye cooordination of Stevie Wonder. I was on a tee ball team so bad that if there wasn't a five run limit per inning I'd still be standing in right field playing a game that began when I was five years old. My soccer team was even worse, the only game we won, the coach wasn't there since some of the parents ran him off, the father of one of the kids on the team took over coaching the team.

To watch: college football (this is the South after all). I went through a pro basketball phase after Jordan retired the first time (since the hype died down, the field (or court)seemed to level out, and I didn't have to listen to Magic Johnson doing commentary kissing Jordan ass the whole time anymore). Went through a short boxing phase, but Don King (among others) has ruined the sport as far as I'm concerned. I can watch tennis and even golf, but I'm not a huge fan of either. When Fox Sports used to show Australian Rules Football and rugby late at night I watched all the time. I was a pro wrestling fan as a kid but never considered it a sport when I watched it.

To play: Swimming I guess, and if it counts billiards.

Tried tennis as a kid, not very good, but I've thought of trying again after talking to the "not girlfriend" about it. If nothing else it's a chance to see her in shorts, she has nice legs. To add to my exercise program, I'm planning to buy a bike since it's getting warm again and I need to add some cardio. I have cousins who bowhunt, have talked about trying archery since I live in the boonies now and could practice in my driveway, and empty pastureland behind me. Then "zen" of it all might appeal to me.

Archery is great for getting outside and getting in some upper body exercise, using a standard bow, one without sights, either a re-curve or a longbow, gives a great deal of satisfaction when the arrow hits the target. Then there's all the little whistles and bells, arrows, a quiver, glove, its not a cheap hobby, but it doesn't have to be expensive either. Your cousins could probably help you get started, and it's something fun you could share with the "not girlfriend".

Dennis, we really like West Covina. My wife is from the Philippines and West Covina is like the Philippine capital of the U.S. and I love the hills and local scene. One of my favorite places is the large Buddhist Temple in the next town.

Scott, it's really interesting the way that the San Gabriel valley has changed over the last 20-25 years, there is now a large population of Asian-Americans, many of them are Buddhist, so there are now quite a few Temples in the area, they are all really good looking buildings. It's a wonderful world, and we live in a wonderful country.

Thanks for the advice, if I took it up, we were going to get me started with a bow one of those cousins isn't using, says it needs to be restrung though. Figured I'd try it and if I like it, either buy it from him or go with the other cousin and look at the used bows trade-ins at the local bowhunting and blackpowder shop. He says they have some good stuff cheap.

I had the idea tonight to suggest kayaking to the not girlfriend, she's the athletic/outdoorsy type, like I said I'm coming around to it as I make changes and get in better shape. One of those cousins lives on the lake and has some small kayaks I've been wanting to try out, and he gave me an open invitation of sorts.

Baseball is my favorite sport -- but normally (always) it's as a spectator.  Currently I practice Aikido, and have for the last several years.  One of the first things I did once I bought a house was set up a dart board.

Baseball does have special nuances that other sports just don't have. It's almost magical as a player or spectator.

*sigh* odd one out again: Equestrian here.  To watch and to participate in.  It's not on the list...but it is what I do.

There is nothing for me like the exhilaration of accomplishment I get when I have achieved the level of communication that is required to get a really good ride out of a horse.  It is one of those "DAMN I'm GOOD" moments that is even better because it has been confirmed by the horse - and shared: the horses get 'into' it too which makes it even more fun.  (Of course there are times when it is the exhilaration of survival - sheer adrenaline! LOL!)

Think of it: managing to communicate and coordinate with 1200+ pounds of musclel power and alien intelligence...anything that horse can do, I can do.  Wa- HOO!

Yup. I love it.

Thanks for encouraging my attempts to improve my health and hopefully have fun while trying to win over an awesome young woman. Like I need anymore excuses to sleep in.

I was going to counter with the reminder I would be kayaking on a freshwater lake, but this is a forum for a website where SciFi Original movies about GIANT MUTANT KILLER CRITTERS are discussed. So.....never mind.

I think that Poogie's post right above yours could be considered "fishing."  Definitely puts an edge on the action, rather than the normal stereotype of someone asleep in a boat with a reel in their hands.

[/quote]

When our daughter was about 11 years old we went to Big Bear lake in the mountains for a picnic, it was on a Saturday so there were quite a few people up there but we found a good spot on the lake shore. there were 10 to 12 pine trees on one side and about 10 to 15 feet away on the other side was a large manzinita bush, so it was sort of like a private beach. We noticed a couple of young guys packing in all sorts of gear to the other side of the manzinita, rods, tackle boxes, a couple large duffel bags, something that looked like a rifle case and a large ice chest that turned out to be full of brewskis. They started fishing from the shore and drinking from the ice chest, their conversation got louder and louder, punctuated by the sound of pop tops, they started cussing out the fish, had a few more beers, decided to wade out and fish. Now we could see and hear them, they could barely stand but every so often one would take the empties back and return with 2 fresh ones, they still had no luck. Heard one say "I know what'll get these little f*****s", he went back out with a fishing bow, sort of like a harpoon except it's a bow and arrow set up with a reel, had an arrow nocked but not drawn and he went staggering around for a couple of minutes before his buddy called him back, said he had a great idea. Now we hear the sound of an air pump and then they come paddling into view in an inflatable canoe, each with a rod and a beer. They realized that they only brought one beer apiece so one hopped out of the canoe and waded to the ice chest, took back a six pack. These two floated around drinking and trying to fish without falling out of the boat. We had found them to be funny and entertaining, we were making up stories about the two fearless fishermen and the giant beer monster, this had been going on for hours but it was time to leave. As we were packing up the two guys paddled to shore, heard more talk about the ***damn fish, then they come into sight again, one paddling, the other was sitting in the front of the canoe, holding the bow with a nocked arrow, he didn't draw back on the bow, thank you God, but they looked to the three of us like an illustration in one of Kari's books, she said something like there's Hiawatha, the mighty fishing guy and we laughed so hard we had to put our stuff down. Then Kari runs down to the lake and picks up a dead carp she saw, runs over to their fishing site and leaves it, I asked why she did that and she said "so the mighty Hiawatha's squaw will have something to cook tonight" We've laughed about these two guys for years.  :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:

We always take a few brews out fishing but never get plastered ... mainly because we fish at Reelfoot Lake which is a swamp and you have to have either Jon Boats or Canoes do to the fact that the Cypress knees will bust the bottom out of most boats, but never fear it's only about 3 feet deep in most places. You only have to worry about the 20 feet of mud and snapping turtles, snakes and that fun stuff. Reelfoot is a lake you can get lost on quick if you don't know your way around, canoe trail run all through the swamp to many hard find fishing holes. So you don't want to get to lit or you might end up swamp food, no cell signal but gps will work provided you have an up to date boat trail map, as they change quickly.
We have a blast.

Got to deal with having this crap in my backyard ...

I'm curious, wasn't Reelfoot lake formed by an earthquake and named by Daniel Boone? I seem to recall reading that somewhere but can't find the book now. (I just realised that I could probably look it up on-line, someday I'll get used to this computer.) Gorgeous picture my friend, most people here would kill for a view like that in their back yard, I'm sure there's a down side to it but right now I can't think of one, you're a lucky guy.

Title: Re: What's your favorite Sport?
Post by: CheezeFlixz on March 12, 2007, 09:43:23 AM
Downside ... bugs lots and lots of bloodsucking bugs.

As for the history of the lake, don't think Boone ever made it this far west in Ky during his explores, not to mention his was getting pretty old by the time the lake was said to have been formed, he would have been about 80 then and a bit old to be tramping through wilderness, killing bears and naming things. LOL.
Legend has it it was named after a Chickasaw Indian chief that had one badly deformed foot and one "Real Foot" and was known as Chief Real Foot (His people called him Kalopin, meaning Reelfoot.) Anyway the spelling ended up as Reelfoot and there was are.
Story is the earthquake of 1811-1812 formed the lake and the Mississippi River flowed backwards for anything from 12 hours to 3 days. Not much is said about the lake prior to 1811 as there hardly any people in the area then or now for that matter. So it has never really been proven if that story is true or not to my knowledge. But it makes for some good stories.
In the ca. 1890's the guy(s) that owned the land tried unsuccessfully to drain the lake to make more farm land, and basically ticking off the locals which resulted in night rider raids and shootin', killin' around the lake. Resulting in the lake being made public domain in TN and KY, so that put a stop to that.

Currently the lake is in need of a new spillway, from one of the trench lines dug to drain it over a century ago, but again farmer are up in arms claiming it will flood farm land. As it would raise the water level about 2 feet. Now seeing how some of these guys are my neighbors we don't see eye to on this issue as I think tourism would be a better income as fall and winter is hunting and spring and summer is fishing. I mean major of both, 1000 upon 1000 come in and to a remote area like this, that's a lot in this remote area. As I have a quite a bit of land on, near and around the lake, but do not farm it and have let it return to nature so to say, I'm not to popular with this group. Anyway that's local politics, sure you don't want to hear that.

Yes it's great having a lake that than in the backyard, that is not a picture of my backyard BTW, but it's pretty close to it. I was to lazy to upload a photo so I grabbed one online, LOL.

Hope that's enough info, if not I know plenty more.
