When my dad was a detective he would have to go to these houses where the people hadn't been seen for a while or there was a strange stink coming from the house. He could smell the bodies once he pulled up the drive-way. Opening the door was another story. And who paid the electric bill?

The news reports haven't mentioned what channel it was left on, have they? A whole screenplay could be written around this thought experiment. Imagine network suits climbing over their own bloody carcasses like arachnids on Planet P, trying to promote their program as the ultimate "MUST SEE" pre-afterlife countdown program. Older man with no one to check up on him- no job or possibly retired - social security, pension, disability, and/or retirement check gets direct deposited. After he dies, no groceries or outside expenses since he's mummifying in frotn of the boob tube, only so many utilities being used since nothing gets adjusted, little if any water.
