Title: MySpace
Post by: Susan on March 02, 2007, 06:02:05 PM
My friend dragged me on myspace months ago and i've found no real use for it. I sure don't want my coworkers on it since that can get you in trouble..lol  And a lot of people I know don't use it.

I know i'm not here as often as usual, work is always so busy which is why i come here in spurts. But i'd love for you to drop a friend request or post your page on this msg.  I'd rather have friend requests from cool folks i've been knowing for years than some of the weird porno freaks that have been sending me requests lately.

Uhh...could you provide more detail about the requests? (http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Laughing/lol-065.gif)

And no, everybody, I did not send any requests. (http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Tongue/mockery-022.gif)

I sent an invite to you from the Badmovies.org Myspace page and also one from me.
Several regulars here have Myspace pages now.
I've been hooked on Myspace since last summer.
Fun stuff!

By the way, nice to finally see some pics of you without all of your hair in your face.

You got a karma for trying out Myspace and finally reappearing here on the board.

:buggedout: Funny thing about MySpace, I decided not to send friend requests to certain "adult models" I'd been in contact with, because I wanted to network a few business contacts with it, as well as all that other stuff.
 Of course, their has been some measurable success in the networking field, but I'm also finding out through MySpace that some of these contacts of mine are just a wee smidgeon more peculiar than I am, with slightly trashier friends.  :bouncegiggle:

Hence my tagline about normal people. :tongueout:

Have you checked out some of the friends on the Badmovies.org Myspace page?
The page started out slow but has been picking up lately.
It averages 1-5 new friend requests per day.  It used to get that many in a week when it was first put up.

90% of the friends there seem pretty cool.  We've got the usual B-movie fans...but we also have independent film producers & production companies, actors, a couple of professional stuntmen including one who's worked several times with Jackie Chan & Jet Li.
One of the directors of Monsturd (http://www.coldfusionvideo.com/m/monsturd.html) and RetarDead is also on the list.  He goes by the name of Prime Minister of A**holeland.      :teddyr:
A couple of other friends there run or are editors for magazines & horror e-zines.
Death metal bands seem to have a huge love for B-movies because we've got several death metal bands as friends.  Most of them are from northern Europe such as Sweden & Norway.
If you go to their pages, there's almost always references to or pictures of B-horror movies.
They definitely seem the most devoted when it comes to crappy cinema.
They always leave comments praising Badmovies.org and how much they love the site.

But there are a few on there that are just plain weird.   :buggedout:

I have denied friend requests for only three people.

There was one guy who looked normal...like an average Joe.
Then I went to his page.
Put it this way, the word "misogynistic" doesn't even begin to describe what he had on his page.
It contained all kinds of pictures and disgusting talk about killing & raping women.
(sometimes in that order)
It was like seeing into the mind of a serial killer.  (Which is what I assumed he wanted people to think)
It was a pretty nasty page.  There was some seriously sick images on it.
I couldn't believe that Myspace had actually let this guy run a page like that.
Needless to say, I immediately denied his friend request.

There was another from a woman who was heavy into S&M and bondage.
Remember the movie 8MM?
This chick was way more hardcore than that with all kinds of nasty pics on her page.
I denied her request.
The third person I denied was a practicing Satanist with satanic imagery like upside down crosses and pentagrams and evil verses and quotes all over his page.
I never leave a reason as to why they were denied...I just don't respond to them at all.
Just click the Deny button and that's that.

So yeah, there's some freaky people out there on Myspace!

Thanks, some people I know have used "Pimp MySpace". I went and looked at what they had, nothing there I wanted to put on my page.

You're right there sure are a lot of ugly MySpace pages out there, like you said when we IM'ed the other day.

I'll try to IM you soon, real life has been intruding lately mostly for the bad this week, missed your message the other day.

I have gotton some weird requests as well...the usual porno actress wannabes( I wanna keep it somewhat clean,as my sweetie and my son and some kin are in) and I get a few starting rock bands, which I always keep. I got one from some guy who had no interest in anything vaguely similar to mine..I think it was some kinda weird swingers thing...yeeech!Deny. I got one from a Film company called KILLING JOKE PRODUCTIONS,which I checked out...it seems they do oddball underground stuff, including a documentary called SNUFF, which, according to the trailer, was to be a short doc on the allged reality or not of snuff films. They put an ad in a trade paper for people intersted in helping with research, and got  a possible snuff film in the mail...which kinda scared the sh!t outta them....creepy looking stuff. I been getting some real oddballs  that think I'm some kinda Manson follower, due to the fact that I have a fasination with the bizzare world of the late 60's,early 70's era in american culture.(I guess the HELTER SKELTER  song clip doesn't help...mebbe I'll remove it.)

Glad to have you on the friends list Susan!

The best thing about Myspace so far for me has been the ability to get in touch with some really great people.  I've had conversations with James Gunn (Slither, Tromeo And Juliet, The Specials), Cory McAbee (The American Astronaut, The Billy Nayer Show), Leif Jonker (Director of "Darkness") and Gary Miller (Lead actor in Jonker's Darkness).

It's amazing just how kind each of these people have been.  Especially Gunn, Jonker and Miller who all thanked me for reviews I did of their films.  The site has made it easy for people like me to get in touch with those out there making the films, and it's really amazing.

Anyway, if anyone is interested in adding me, here's my page:

I tinkered with editing mine but two things were the driving force in the ultimate result.
A. I have dialup. It takes long enough to load most pages (like..minutes long)
B. I like to keep it simple. Sometimes when someones background is too crazy it's hard to read the text.

It's not quite as fun as blogger but i guess it has it's purpose.

Only about 50% of the world population. 30+% of the population of the United States lives in areas without standard access to broadband, other than overpriced wireless service or other specialty services for rural areas and limited access at that. There are, of course, lots of people in this country who have to go with what they can afford. Not everyone can afford to live in the cushy part of town, can opt for broadband and the nicer things in life over making certain their kids are fed, or win a sweepstakes contest. Another dial-up user here, I've mentioned it before, but my only other option out here is overpriced Comcast cable modem. Damn BellSouth/AT&T won't run fiber optic line a half mile of a main road yet to branch out. Plus I hate being able to relate to the lame and unfunny dial-up jokes in Mallard Fillmore.

I can't even listen to the music on my own MySpace page. I like seeing what people listen to and what's available on there, but what's the point in second and half second increments as a song loads.

I do want better visuals than the standard layout. Let's see what kind of mess I can make out of it.

Susan, Black Snake Moan? Christina Ricci as a strung out horny floozy in skivvies and a t-shirt and chained up! It's not my birthday and it's too early for Christmas......

Myspace is a good place to keep check on some bands you're a fan of, especially if they're unsigned.  I keep an eye on a few bands I like just to see when they may happen to be in town etc, plus some of my friends have some reasonable 'sites'.  One was full of the brightest, most visually incredible pictures, just to make your eyes hurt.  It would be annoying if it wasn't done on purpose...

I've basically just got a myspace so I can check these things, rather than create my own special, personal space.  I have been too busy lately to contribute to my own blog, so I figure adding myspace to the mix is just a waste of my time, as good as some parts of it are.  Stupid life getting in the way...

Maybe one day I'll actually spruce it up a bit, but that's not a very high priority to me.

But hey, if you're interested:

Yaddo - what I do is hit the PAUSE on the music on MYSPACE so it will load. Then after a few minutes i'll play it. Otherwise it just keeps freezing.

Ash - I know this may come as a shock but I choose to be on dialup. I can afford high speed, the question is do I wanna pay for it? Hell no. Most of the prices around here are just ridiculous for internet access. You'd be suprised what you can get used to. I'm debating on getting a wireless router however, with luck I might have a few neighbors I can piggy back on. The verizon guys just laid down fiber optic and have been pushing it hard, knocking on my door constantly. Finally the guy was asking all these questiosn about what i pay now to show how their deal is better. I told him I get internet for free...beat that...lol  (perks of having worked for compuserve years ago is that some of the corporate accounts seem to have got "lost in the shuffle" when they started sending all the jobs to India)

I also don't have cable. I've also sat down and estimated over the years how much money i've saved in not having these things. I don't regret the cable option, whenever I go to my parents house they have 900 freaking channels. Half of them don't work and the other half just play crap...i can NEVER find anything to watch. When you have 5 channels you can find plenty, plus all that extra money i might have been putting into cable i've used to build on my dvd collection.

Incidentally I also own a trackphone, pay as you go. I just refuse to give in to the consumerist attitude so many of the companies are brainwashing young people to think, that they have to have and buy everything. i guess I figure i work realy hard for my money and i hate to just keep giving it to verizon..lol god knows enough of it is going to my electric company  :buggedout:

Title: Re: MySpace

Susan, We have the wireless at our house it's just $19.99 a month, it's through Verizon. If they're having some kind of promotion, say for $14.99 a month, they lower ours to $14.99 until it's over then they go back to the $19.99. We haven't had any problems with it......yet.

Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: Susan on March 04, 2007, 06:11:40 PM
well from what i know you can get a wireless connection by piggybacking off of neighbors connections, free. i know people who do it. At this time i'm hoping to move soon anyhow to a new complex, if i get around to finding one and i'll have to see what they offer there. I looked into some of the cheapy ISP's but didn't see very many rave customer reviews

Check out the Net10 phones. They are the same company as Tracfone, so they use Cingular as a carrier, but they are only 10 cents a minute. The minimum card you can buy is $30 (300 minutes) but that is good for 60 days; and so long as you stay current, your minutes will carry over. I had a Tracfone, but as my use became more, it became too expensive. I had a T-Mobile phone as well, but turning the corner could cause you to lose the signal. The service with my Tracfone was great (I never lost a call) but in comparing it to Net10, after they updated to 60 days on the cards, it was a lot cheaper for the same service. Of course, if you only use like 10 minutes a month, then Tracfone would be cheaper as the cards are good for 120 days. This is presuming you have not optioned for the one year plan with double minutes.

Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: Ash on March 04, 2007, 11:35:04 PM
Too bad you don't have a company like IWireless here in Iowa.
Pay $40.00 per month for unlimited calling pretty much anywhere in the state.
And it's not a contract.  You can pay for a month and then stop if you like.

They also offer 7 day, 15 day and 2 month plans.
It's a pretty good deal.

As for internet access, I couldn't imagine using anything but cable or DSL.
I've had cable for several years now.
If I were on dial-up, there are certain things I just wouldn't use...like Myspace etc...

Actually, I think I'd rather go without the internet than use dial-up.
There's just too much waiting on dial-up and it wouldn't be worth the headaches.

Thanks for the tip, Susan. I have been pausing the music when on pages rather than listening to it that way. I just haven't been checking back or unpausing it after a few minutes, when browsing or following friend links I don't hang around lots of pages that long any way. That'll come in handy on the MyMusic pages for sure.

Menard, I've heard of Net10 before, might have to look them. I have a Tracfone like Susan. Got it as a backup when BellSouth was taking forever to permanently fix my landline that kept going out whenever it even looked like rain. Now I use it for meeting up when away from home or so I can still be reached in case emergencies while online. My usage is low, about 5 minutes a week at most right now. Don't want bells and whistles, don't need toys on the phone. So pay as you go is fine for now.

I like it for the most part, does get lousy reception in Big Box Stores like Wal-Mart and Lowe's though, I've missed a couple of calls while in places like that. Lots of bars most places and at home, helps that there's a brand new Cingular tower near the house also.

Net10 also uses pretty much the same phones as Tracfone; being they are the same company. No bells and whistles. They, like Tracfone, do have the units left display on the screen.

You can find more here: Net10 (http://www.net10.com/home_page.jsp)

Too bad they don't have an affiliate program or I'd have them all over some of my sites. :bluesad:

One question for you Myspace users here...

Within the last two weeks, have you been getting a TON of spam friend requests?
These are mostly from women who run private porn sites but some are from regular looking folks who have a secret agenda...to get you to add them to your friends list and then spam your comments area with offers like "Make money by filling out surveys!" or "Get your free gift card now!"

AHHHHH!!

These people should have their computers smashed with a sledgehammer.

I'll go to my page and see that it's been viewed like 20 times in the past 24 hours only to find out that it's spammers who were trying to add me as friends.
Even worse is the fact that these people use programs like the Myspace Friend Adder (http://www.massbots.com/) to send out thousands of bogus requests.
And God forbid if you accidentally add one.  If you do, all of your friends that you have there will be put on their spam list as well.
That sh*t should be illegal.

I never used to get spam like this on Myspace but lately, it's completely out of control.
It's even more infuriating when they spam my deceased brother's memorial Myspace page.
Soulless bastards!  All of them!   :hatred:

Anyone else having this same problem lately on Myspace?

Not a lot but a few, but my friend list is small and my page is still pretty plain, not much of a draw.

I got one of the spam ones the other day, got one of the private porn site ones about two weeks ago, got what I figured was another one not long before that. I have got a few friend requests from folks on the MyMusic pages but these look legit, when I've looked at their pages their influences or MyMusic friends often include people I've listed that I listen to or musicians on my friends list.

Then again now Eddie Izzard is on my list, guess he (or his people) were looking to add names as the debut of his FX series got closer. After looking at some of the friends on his list, I'll probably be getting requests from a much weirder group, legit or not.

The only thing that I find useful on Myspace is that it makes it much easier for musicians to get their music out to the masses  (being that I'm a working musician myself.

Other than that, I find the site to be throughly pointless.   But that's just my opinion.

Figures the day after I posted I got one each of the kind of junk invites Ash mentioned. A spam one that didn't even pretend to be anything other than spam, the ones I had gotten before at least loooked like legit pages on first glance.

The porn one wanted you to download something call "MS Viewer" I think to see anything other than the small image in the corner. No thanks. If I wanted porn I'd see it out not the other way around. The porn-type invites I got before usually had no image but lots of personal stuff about wanting to meet fun, wild, exciting people, etc.etc.

pretty girls don't wanna be my friend

I HAVe managed to trim down the amount of nasty boys looking for boom boom by adding a notice on the top of my page. Since then tho the male friend invites pretty much dropped to 0...lol

As for how to add a background image to MYSPACE - you have to save it to photobucket first, unless another site hosts it and allows a direct link. If you need the exact code let me know, i have a lot of sites marked in my Favorites on how to do things. I like a black background, i'm a simple girl with simple needs

but I still like to tweak my page

Hey Viktor, I snuck a look at your page from that link you had in the other thread, and I really liked your work!

What do you use for your music?  I love all that poppy-videogame-type synth stuff you've got going there.

That's awesome , dude!!! Thank you. It really means something to me, to hear that. I use a lot of different software, and VST's to make my music. Fruityloops, Cubase, Cooledit. Recording samples from old tapes and such. Thank you for the interest  :tongueout:

And..for what it's worth - i've upgraded to DSL since last posting on this topic. That's why i'm on you tube all the time.

Hey Susan, about a week or so ago, you posted a comment on my page. Myspace told me it had something embedded in it (I assume it was a YouTube vid) and I needed to approve it before it would appear. Somehow I deleted it by mistake. Do you remember what it was?

Shadowfyre...

When someone posts a video link to your comments, Myspace makes you view the comment before posting it.
When you first see the comment request, if you just click SUBMIT, it won't add it to your comments area for some reason.
You have to click VIEW and then click SUBMIT.

By the way Susan, loved that warped Charlie Brown video you added to my page.

possibly i think i might know but god knows. I resent you a video i *think* might be it - but if not it doesn't matter because this video is awsome.

Myspace didn't bother to explain their feature of posting videos - just clicking SUBMIT will delete it. You actually have to VIEW the comment and THEN you approve it. It's how they prevent spamming or maybe hacking..not sure but they should have put a little explanation to it because lots of people are accidentally deleting my comments left and right....lol

just a heads up - anything from me embedded is going to be a youtube video. and it's going to be something special

If anybody wants to add me as a friend, here's my page:

http://www.myspace.com/ashthecat3

Due to the insane number of porn spammers that were bombarding me, I was forced to activate the control that requires people to know either my last name or e-mail address to add me.
My last name is Davis.

And by the way, you must be at least 18 to add me.
Any requests by people under 18 will be denied.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Badmovies.org Myspace page has gone through many changes over the last six months.
I don't update it as often as I should, but when I do, it's always worth a look.

I've stated before that 90% of the Myspace pages out there are crap and I have always aimed to make sure that the Badmovies page isn't.
(trust me, I've seen hundreds of people's pages there)

The Badmovies.org Myspace page is mostly about what we all love here...B-movies and other funny clips...with a little bit of me thrown in.

Too many people load up their pages with about a hundred different videos; maybe one or two of which will actually be watched, and tons of other useless garbage that literally makes my computer slow down so badly, I can hardly manage to even scroll their page down.
And they don't put it together in an interesting way.

They never learned that "Less is more".

The Badmovies page definitely stands out in my opinion. (and not just because I run it)
I want people to say, "Wow...this is a cool page!" when they visit it.

http://www.myspace.com/badmoviesorgmember

And many thanks to Andrew for allowing me to operate it.
He could've said no, but he didn't.

By the way, the Ilsa and dungeon theme are going bye-bye soon.
Any suggestions as to what I should create for the next look?

Where did you get that pic of Godzilla on a Magic the Gathering card?
I've seen several others on other people's pages but was never able to find out where they got them.
Is there a website that lets you make your own?

And I didn't realize that you were on the Badmovies.org Myspace friend list.
I try to keep regulars here as top friends there.

Speaking of which, I haven't updated it in a while.
Think I'll give it a new background, avatar and add a link to a different review on the blog tonight.

I got your friend request Odinn.

By the way, editing your page is really easy if you have the right editor.
Use this website:
http://www.picgames.com/forum/myspace-layout-editor.php?lid=116497892526094

Out of all the sites I've used, that one is the most user friendly.
And you can save your layouts right there on the site.  That way you can change your backgrounds and preferences any time you like.

Myspace is also a great way to meet single women...if you're single and unmarried like I am.
One thing that irks me about Myspace is how shy some of the women are.

Women from my city will send me a friend request and I'll approve it.
Usually, after I've approved them, I'll send a friendly e-mail greeting and then they'll respond to that e-mail saying that they thought I was good looking and they wanted to get to know me better.
If I find them attractive (which several of them have been) and try to initiate some kind of dialogue via IM, they all turn cold.
They just don't answer after our first correspondence.

What's up with that?

I could understand if I had said or did something to drive them away...
But with these women, I barely get the chance to talk with them at all.
It's like they get cold feet or something.

I don't have time for that B.S.

Someone send a sexy woman my way that has some friggin' confidence!

Ash...try talking to them in e-mail a few times first before suggesting IM...many women I know have complained to me how they get turned off by someone asking about IM that they don't really know...most of them seem to think that if you want IM right away, you're looking to cyber...which may not be the case but like I said, I've heard this from many women.

And yeah...nothing beats a sexy woman with confidence.

As far as internet dating being disastrous...yeah, if you're not careful it can be...I've heard horror stories and even when I was a mod, I had some women that made life hell for me by thinking something was there that really wasn't...(there's alot of nuts out there!)...but that's a different story.

I do have a positive story about internet dating as I did meet someone online quite by accident...not really looking...I have met her in real life as well and she is really something special. We were online friends for over a year but then things changed for me at home and we eventually became more than friends. She has really had a positive influence on me and I'm thankful to have met her.

I know i'm not here as often as usual, work is always so busy which is why i come here in spurts. But i'd love for you to drop a friend request or post your page on this msg.  I'd rather have friend requests from cool folks i've been knowing for years than some of the weird porno freaks that have been sending me requests lately.

You know, Susan, actually, I think I DID drop a friend request to you several months back, even mentioned how I knew you (well, knew OF you) from the Badmovies forum, but I didn't hear back from ya...

Course, I didn't include the link to my profile here, so maybe you thought I was just randomly messaging anyone with a female name... (which I'd never do.. )

Oh, I don't go all out and try to get a date in the first e-mail or anything like that.
My initial message to them is always very brief.

What bugs me is that these women are contacting me.
They take the time to use the Myspace search function, look at my page and then send me a friend request.
And when I send them a quick message asking them if they'd like to chat sometime, I never hear from them again.  It's not like I'm asking for their e-mail address or phone number.

I sometimes feel like asking them why the heck they even bothered to add me as a friend in the first place.
If there's one thing I can't stand, it's when some women play childish games like that.
Most of them usually get deleted from my friends list if they won't talk to me.

Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: odinn7 on January 10, 2008, 09:12:19 AM
LOL...Ash...what can I say? You and I both know that some women are completely messed up. Maybe their whole idea is to just build up their number of friends, you know?
You never really know what goes on in some peoples minds...and I often wonder if I would really want to know.

I also wasn't suggesting that I think you jump all over them in the first e-mail...I never pictured you for something like that...all I was saying is that suggesting IM or some sort of chat early on may put them off as I have heard that it does.

Keep trying...it will happen. It did for me and I wasn't even looking.

I understand why that'd bug ya, my friend, but hell, you're not going to get much sympathy from me.  Usually when I get girls emailing me out of the blue, they want me to visit their "Website with adult pictures" they continently have linked, and they want to know my credit  card number.

The Top Friends list thing is bugging me.

I've had friends send me an irate message because I moved their position down a couple notches.  WTF is up with that!?
Some people take the Top Friends list seriously!
As if my moving their spot somehow makes them think that I feel differently about them.
They couldn't be further from the truth.

I regularly move my top friends around.  Just to mix it up so it doesn't get boring and so some of my other lesser known friends get a chance to be on top.

How about you?
Ever get grief from friends because you moved them around in your Top Friends list?

I have one of those Top like, 12 or 16 things, but half are like, bands/entertainers, with the top 8 people I know.  Never had grief over it.

I mean, why be bothered over a top 8 dispute.

Never had a problem like that but I did have one "friend" who dropped me because...because I didn't answer their comments quick enough.

During the day, i am at work and can't always be checking...so she wrote to me and I responded a bit and then I had to get something done...next thing I know, she was gone...how childish.

Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: Susan on April 05, 2008, 06:59:50 AM
i usually move mine around and mostly for no personal reason but just to re-arrange it, but i haven't been on myspace regularly in awhile as i've had a lot of personal issues going on. Hence reason i haven't been here much either. I've never had anyone, well ok ONE person, comment about me moving them around on the friends list..or off ;-)

i never much pay attention let alone complain where i am on someone elses list. I would just be sorely disappointed if my close friends didn't at least have me on their top! Then again i have celebrities on mine...

I limit who goes to my page anyhow, i want to keep it completely hidden from work and unfortunately as much as I love some of my coworkers - i will not give them access to my page. I've seen things get ugly at work because of myspace, people talk about whats on peoples pages and track what you post and say to others and are real gossipy and that kind of stuff can really follow you in your career, unfortunately. I've seen companies fire people, plus I'm in a leadership position for a large corporation and i don't want anything i do to be tracked at work on their ITG list or known about by coworkers as i don't want to jeopordize my job or reputation. Not that i do anything illegal or unsavory on the net, only that i am dr. jeckly and mrs hyde and only want coworkers to think of me as dr. jeckyl..lol  I do what i can to protect my job and my professionlism at work as it makes my life easier and protects what i've worked hard to accomplish there.

totally off topic huh? lol

I gotta say though, one thing that bugs me about myspace is all those people who insist on changing the background of their page, but don't seem realize they need to change the color of the TEXT as well, so people can actually READ what they have on there without have to highlight everything.

And why is when I discover long lost friends on myspace, send them a message, I never hear back from them?  You'd think they'd be glad to reconnect with an old buddy...

I recently changed the background of my myspace page, and some people said that about the font/text.  I don't know how to do it, but I really like my background and don't want to change it.

And I agree with you about the people who don't message back.
