Title: 10 bad movies a person needs to see before they die
Post by: Capt_Scrummy on March 09, 2007, 03:42:03 PM
Is it possible to compile this list?  There are so many movies and so little time, and I was wondering if it was even a viable option to come up with a list that most of us could agree on.  Besides, I need some more recommendations.  I'd start with "Manos:  The Hands of Fate", but I'm a little biased.

Obvious choices for bad cinema (besides Manos) would include Plan 9 from Outer Space, Troll 2, Battlefield Earth, The Dungeonmaster, Mazes and Monsters, and Pieces at least, I should think.

So many others I haven't seen though, so I'll let someone else either agree to my choices or offer good substitutes.

The list would have to include all of the following:

1) Megaforce
2) The Apple
3) The Being.

Maniac (1934)
The Ape Man
Robot Monster
Mesa of Lost Women
The Creeping Terror
The Giant Claw
The Beast of Yucca Flats
Dracula vs. Frankenstein
The Exorcist II: The Heretic

Any of the Larry Buchanan AIP remakes
Just about any film about 'Bigfoot'
Absolutely anything by Andy Milligan

The list would have to include all of the following:

1) Megaforce
2) The Apple
3) The Being.

The Being should be at the top of the list.
The second one should be Shadow Zone.

Roadhouse is bad, but it isn't bad enough for this list.

I mean, don't get me wrong.  I like Roadhouse.  But.. well, Roadhouse would be, say, the fourth circle of Hell.   We're talking all ninth circle here.

Haven't seen anything on Torgo's list.  :(  I've got work to do.

I am not sure about "The Being."  However, I completely agree with both "The Apple" and "Megaforce."

Shark Attack 3:  Megaladon really should be on there.

Shark Attack 3:  Megaladon really should be on there.

That's one of my Sci-Fi Channel Saturday afternoon favorites. Today appears to be another 'Mother Nature Gone Wild' day, which is not near as much fun as 'Mutant Shark/Snakehead/Frankenfish Gone Wild' day.

I've never been able to figure out exactly what's going on in Megaladon, but the groaning noise that shark makes sounds just like my dog 'Benny'.

Hammerhead: Shark Frenzy, the one where mad scientist Jeffery Combs turns his cancer-ridden son into a sort of walleyed wereshark, is right up there, too.

Here are three:

Flash Gordon from 1980

The Flash Gordon Serials from 1936

the Flash Gordon series from 1954

Watched the first  eight times and the the second three.

Only know the third from a small clip but It looked promising.

Those are essential stories.

Otherwise you could add the superior storytelling of Hobgoblins to your list.

Ok, so far I've got something along the lines of this (in no particular order, we can argue over that later).

1) Manos:  The Hands of Fate
2) Troll 2
3) Plan 9 From Outer Space ('cause it's classic)
4) The Apple
5) Megaforce (haven't seen it)
6) Megaladon (haven't seen it either)
7) The Beast of Yucca Flats
8) The Giant Claw (can't get ahold of it)

now some of these I've picked because I've seen them, and frankly, they're terrible.  Some I'm taking your word on.  However, my base isn't incredibly too big to work with.

Quick question:  Has anybody here seen "The Ice Cream Man" with Clint Howard?

I agree with most of those listed but especially THE BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS. I'd add the following as I really had a blast watching each and every one of them!:

BRIDE OF THE MONSTER
THE ANGRY RED PLANET
THE BEAST WITH A MILLION EYES
THE BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS
CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA
FIRE MAIDENS OF OUTER SPACE
FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE SPACE MONSTER
THE HORROR OF PARTY BEACH
INCREDIBLE KUNG FU MISSION
INVASION OF THE SAUCER MEN
KING KONG ESCAPES

Is THE APPLE really that much worse(in the sense of 'better', by the criteria of this forum!) than CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC?

As a long time fan of Valerie Perrine's legs, I've had plenty of time to develop a true understanding of just how bad this movie really is at heart.  It's like the Ann Coulter of shallow film excess!

Man, I hope I don't lose a karma point for this indescretion

Well, both definately have their (de)merits.  These movies singlehandedly brought a swift and painful death to the short-lived genre of movie rock operas.  However, I prefer "The Apple" over "Can't Stop the Music" for a few reasons.

1) It's set in the far distant future of 1994 - you can't beat that.
2) The music is awkwardly caught between a dying disco scene and the birth of glam rock
3) There's a song and dance number in hell!
4) Character names such as Alfi, Bibi, Nambi, Pambi, and Mr. Tops remind me of a bad children's book.
5) Spangles! (more than there are in "Can't Stop the Music")

It's true, watching the Village People tiptoe around their obvious homosexuality while casually dropping hints to the audience (i.e. the YMCA scene) is hilarious, but God inexplicably driving a golden Mercedes out of heaven and rapturing the hippies is too good to pass up, no matter how fine Valerie Perrine and her legs are.

Do not forget that at the end of the movie God (Mr. Topps) descends from heaven and saves all the hippies from the RIAA by taking them away in his white automobile.

Review:

I have to say that one really bad music opera belongs on the list and my vote is for "The Apple."

i think if we are gonna do this it should be broken down into time period lists i.e 50's 60's 70's and 80's possibly 90's top ten lists of b-movies.

That's a good idea.  There are too many movies out there.  However, it's a top 10 list of movies a person should see before they die.  Maybe if we did a top 10 list of each decade, and then took the top 2 from each one.

Title: Re: 10 bad movies a person needs to see before they die
Post by: Rombles on March 11, 2007, 07:55:14 AM
Would it be just as valid, though, to come up with a top 10 from each genre of bad movies, and then take the top X number from each of them?

If we manage to get a definitive Top 10 list up, without any arguments, I will be shocked!  (Mind you I wouldn't see that disagreement as a bad thing - we are here because we disagree with the mainstream - why then should we all agree with each other!)

That is not to say that I am against Top 10 lists - maybe everyone should post their own personal list of the Top 10 Bad Movies THEY would recommend everyone should watch before they die!  Or see if we can come up with the top 10 from each decade, and the top 10 from each genre...

So, here goes.... MY Top 10 Bad Movies That I Believe Everyone Should Watch Before They Die....

Bad Taste
Brain Dead (aka Dead Alive)
Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowlarama Of Death
The Toxic Avenger
Plan 9 From Outer Space  (cos despite what I said before, I just can't fathom a bad movie list without this on there!)
Flash Gordon (yes the 1980 one)
Xanadu  (ok, might be JUST BEFORE they die )
Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes
Guitar Wolf : Wild Zero
Houseboat Horror

And that list only looks like that because I don't consider Cemetary Man, Shaun Of The Dead and Dawn Of The Dead to be "bad" movies, despite the fact that everyone SHOULD see these before they die as well!  B-Movie definition alone will make a Top 10 list tricky!

Title: Re: 10 bad movies a person needs to see before they die
Post by: fortunato on March 11, 2007, 10:41:16 AM
I would disagree with the placement of Dead Alive (Braindead) and Bad Taste because they aren't "bad films" so much as low-budget, yet creative efforts that helped to make Peter Jackson one of the finest modern filmmakers. That's like saying Sam Raimi's, Tobe Hooper's, or Quentin Tarantino's early films belong on a bad movie list, and I just don't agree with that.

The rest of that tripe does count, however, so....good list.

1.) Pocket Ninjas (Basically a low budget rip-off of 3 Ninjas)
2.) Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla
3.) Fat Spy (any movie with Phyllis Diller singing about quivering loins...truly horrifying...)
4.) Last Samurai (low budget action movie)
5.) Pocket Ninjas
6.) Double O Kid
7.) Atomic Brain
8.) Screaming Skull
9.) Battlefield Earth
10.) Catman in Boxer's Blow
11.) Massacre (1985) (the worst lone wolf cop who plays by his own rules movie I ever saw...)

I'm throwing in #11 because it seems to pretty unknown...

1.) Pocket Ninjas (Basically a low budget rip-off of 3 Ninjas)
Can it be worse than 'High Noon at Mega Mountain'? Er, not that I watched that or anything.
Quote
4.) Last Samurai (low budget action movie)
This would be the Tom Cruise movie that wouldn't know historical accuracy if it hit it in the face like a ton of bricks? I'd say it's not truly bad in the sense that a Plan 9 or Monster a Go Go is bad, it just sucks hard in a general sort of way.
Quote
9.) Battlefield Earth
I'd definitely keep this as an example of how Bad Movies can be made today but I'd suggest having a neck brace handy.

Let's see, some ideas of my own. I've already mentioned Monster a Go Go. Plan 9 must be on any top 10 list, I think it's written on stone tablets somewhere. Robot Monster too, a great example of how hope just can't overcome a shoestring budget and silly plot. Also, Catwomen of the Moon. Since no bad movie list is complete without a classical horror icon, I'll end my thoughts with Dracula vs. Frankenstein.

You're right, Pocket Ninjas is fantastic.  I just ordered that one a week ago, along with "Flyin' Ryan".

10.) Catman in Boxer's Blow

I must say that this one is incredibly bad.  I only included the first Catman movie because I thought one of them ought to be up there.  I've got a friend who's actually keeping correspondence with Jonathan Isgar, the man who played Catman.  I didn't know that anybody else had actually seen these...

The Last Samurai I consider awful, wasn't the Tom Cruise one.  I meant the 1989 one that starred Lance Henriksen as a mercenary in Africa hired to recover a lost samurai sword.

Catman in Lethat Track has a pyrokinetic preacher who is actually a devil worshipper who was working for the KGB in Southeast Asia...Anything that deranged deserves my respect...

You know what?  You are right.  Damn I hate that - I don't even agree with myself anymore!  Actually you are part right.   I will fight to the death to defend Bad Taste's place on any "Bad Movie" list (OK, maybe not a list of Bad Spaghetti Westerns, or Bad Musicals, but you get what I mean).  Brain Dead I will have to agree, though.  I must have changed my mind somewhere between the beginning and the end of that list!   So, after re-considering, and reading the subsequent lists, I will scratch Brain Dead, and put Battlefield Earth in its place.  And actually while I am rethinking things, I probably should take Xanadu off the list (gee, I must have felt like being a bastard when I did that list, putting that one on there!) and make everyone watch Bad Taste twice!

Title: Re: 10 bad movies a person needs to see before they die
Post by: sideorderofninjas on March 14, 2007, 10:49:41 PM
Let's just consider 2 different lists: a "Bad" Movie list for movies that are torture to endure and a "B" Movie list for what we would consider classics like Bad Taste and Evil Dead 2, etc...

I have a few more movie names we can add (or discard) to our growing list of 10 worst.

Gigli, obviously
Ishtar
Cabin Fever
The Kindred
Pteradactyl Woman from Beverly Hills (or whatever that movie was that I mercifully forgot about)
and Snow White: A Tale of Terror

Great list, RC.

And you are not alone: I have seen The White Gorilla! Who knew there was such racial tension in the gorilla world?

And it's probably the only movie ever to kill off the hero, heroine, and a cute (?) little kid with a throw-away line. "Well, all we found were some skeletons."

One I forgot: Herschell Gordon Lewis' She Devils on Wheels.
This one has the best theme song in movie history, and it's "In Blinding Color!!!"

Great choices RC. After reading that, I know we have similar tastes in movies. I really think one could devote an whole section to Kung Fu films too (their era of greatness was the late 70s-early 80s) just for the Bruce Lee Rip-Offs alone.  Let's see if I can do it by decade:

1930s:

The Vampire Bat
The Gorilla
Maniac
Tarzan, the Ape Man
The Phantom Creeps

1940s

The Ape
Invisible Ghost
Black Dragons
Bowery At Midnight
Whispering Ghosts
The Ape Man
Tarzan's Desert Mystery
Unknown Island
White Pongo
Valley of the Zombies

1950s:

Bride of the Gorilla
Fire Maidens of Outer Space
Cat-Women of the Moon
Mesa of Lost Women
Robot Monster
Bride of the Monster
The Brain From Planet Arous
The Giant Claw
Plan 9 From Outer Space
Teenagers From Outer Space

1960s:

The Beast of Yucca Flats
Creature From the Haunted Sea
Eegah!
The Creeping Terror
The Horror of Party Beach
Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster
Curse of the Swamp Creature
Creature of Destruction
King Kong Escapes
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

1970s:

TNT Jackson
Hercules in New York
Horror of the Blood Monsters
Dracula vs. Frankenstein
Lady Frankenstein
The Thing With Two Heads
Blackenstein
The Forgotten (Don't Look In the Basement)
The Giant Spider Invasion
Starcrash

1980s:

Maximum Overdrive
Alien From L.A.
Space Mutiny
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Nightbeast
They Call Me Bruce?
The True Game of Death
The Shaolin Invincibles (with Kung Fu fighting gorillas no less?)

RC Merchant's taste and mine are so close, I would almost adopt his list for mine --
However, we don't need to go too far afield here --
The challenge was "10 Bad Movies to See Before You Die" -- so you have to FORCE yourself to winnow down to the very excess(essence?) of dreck --
Ergo:
Plan 9 From Outer Space
Robot Monster
Bride of The Monster
Starcrash
The Violent Years
Creature From The Haunted Sea
Invisible Invaders
Equinox
Horrors of Spider Island
The Giant Claw --
* * *
 . . . so there . . .
peter opinion/denny final

Yeah, I'd vouch for Don't Look in the Basement, as well. Some movies just deserved to be watched for ludicrus plot twists.

1. Pocket Ninjas.
This seems to be at the height of most people's lists...

Check out my review on facebook:

2. Hercules - Legend, Hero, Friend.
Which can be rephrased as "Hercules - Legend. Hero. Friend?"  It has the usual sick 90's blending of a kids movie and child slightly inappropriate scenes.

3. Abraxus Guardian of the Universe.
Stars Jessie "The Body" Venturia, another tough guy from Europe, and 5 or 6 slow jazz fight scenes...Ah, I'm not really going to go into the rest of it....hehehe but its just funny!

My list would have to include Dolomite, at least one 1970's Toho kaiju movie, and Drunken WuTang

Big trouble in little China (or was it little Tokoyo?)

I can't believe this wasn't on every list.

For my own two cents, I think budget is the most important divider of bad movies.

I spent about an hour browsing this thread, which has been filled with laughs, but this is the first posting I have a bone to pick with.  I do not think BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA is truly a "bad" movie, as its hokeyness was intentional, and I think in large part, works!   :teddyr:  No masterpiece, I do find it kind of entertaining in a cheezee way, but not exactly "bad = good" way...

Yes, DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT belongs on that top 10 list of DUMBEST movies of all time that we still like to watch... oops, that's not the right list???

EQUINOX ???  I remember loving EQUINOX... but..., it is bad...

JaseSF and RCMerchant (Bela) sure have great lists to offer... HERCULES IN NEW YORK ...  :bouncegiggle: Now that's bad !!!

Ps.  I think SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS   should be voted the worst film of all time (that qualifies as a "feature film").  Boring.  Annoying.  Stupid.  Damn!!  I hate that movie !  Who doesn't???

For me there's really only one movie that is so bad that it becomes a masterpiece. It is "Showgirls" and upon watching it for the first time a month or two ago I was immediately sold. This montage encapsulates why I feel this way.

PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (or any Ed Wood)

I don't have any Roger Corman up there, but he could almost fill his own top 10 list  :tongueout:
