Title: Pukey Pukey Retch Retch...
Post by: DistantJ on March 12, 2007, 11:27:15 AM
Ew. I know it's a bit gross, but why not. For some reason as much blood and guts as I can see in a movie and not flinch, somebody puking always seems to make me flinch more, I'm a little sensitive about stomach related stuff for some reason, so it'd be interesting to see what you guys think.

Okay so in the "He Peed Himself!" topic, Neville posted this:

Quote
Well, at least it's not as overused as the puking scene, which seems mandatory these days, specially after a naive character witnesses / performs a violent act.

So I wondered, how many of these can you name? I could give ya a couple...

Obviously there's The Exorcist, which goes without saying...

In Resident Evil, the chick who is slowly becoming a Zombie is sick on the floor at one point.

In Phenomena, Jennifer Conelly makes herself puke to get rid of some poison.

In DOOM, the "arc" - a 'teleporter', transports your cells to mars so fast that it makes a couple of the marines sick.

In Cannibal Holocaust it happens a bunch of times, usually a few times from the audience too.

How many of these can you guys recall, and do these affect you at all, or are they nothing worse than a blood scene?

Best vomit scene: Mr Creosote in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.

Care for a wafer-thin mint?

I personally hate puking scenes as well. Foaming at the mouth is overused as well.

Puking scenes:

Amityville ll: The Possession - And I am not referring to the audiences reaction to this mess of a movie, but to the priest's reaction to his holy water turning to blood.

Deep Rising - Trevor Goddard finally expresses his feelings toward David James Elliot's acting in a sea sickness scene, though brief, which proves you can truly target your upchuck.

Las Vegas (the TV series) - I stopped watching this after they opened a show with a scene where a woman openly vomits into a complimentary bowl of pastry. It is usually a good sign that things are going downhill when a show resorts to cheap tricks.

Well, that's enough for me; before the subject begins to make me sick.

Hostel. Lots of murky brown water hurling out of people's gullets in there.

I'd love to have one of those sick sticks from "Minority Report".
It'd be great fun to use at a party.

Don't forget the famous pie-eating pukefest from Stand By Me. It's definitely one of the best uses of puke in a movie I've ever seen.

"MirrorMask", when the dark queen vomits up... shadow?

"Jackass 2", when whatshisface drinks horse semen - I'm not sure if he puked after that, but I almost did.

"A Scanner Darkly", a rotoscoped Keanau Reeves spits up on a clinic floor (good movie, by the way).

There is a ninja in "Ninja Wars" that uses vomit as a weapon.  He even projectile vomits another ninja out of a tree (after the other ninja ran up it to escape the stream in the first place).  Heck, just go check out the review:

What, no one's brought up the puking scene in Team America yet?  That scene goes on and on and on and on and on some more.
The second most disgusting scene in the movie.

While Dr. Greene dying was the last straw for me with watching ER, the every week someone vomiting on the show got to be too much of a cliche. I work with a guy who loved the show and quit watching solely because of the hurling.

My cousin who's a doctor won't watch House due to the seizures and some of the vomiting protrayed on the show. He's in orthopedics, shattered bones and mangled limbs don't bother him; his wife once described him as thrilled and excited by all those he got to work on during his ER rotations.

Back to the topic:

Renton's puking and halluciantions during his lockup at home while going through withdrawls in trainspotting.

Strangely I'm thinking of more from TV ("Crunchy Frog" from Monty Python's Flying Circus anyone) than specific movies. I know I've seen plenty of chunk spewing in contemporary war movies, yet can't name any right now.

I thought that I'd find that scene particularly revolting (by the way, it's called "City of the Living Dead" where I am), but when I saw it I just found it funny and fake looking. The only part which was gross was the sound effects.

One of my favorite vomit scenes has already been mentioned: Peter Jackson in Bad Taste. I never could watch that one. The other is Udo Kier in Blood for Dracula, when the 'virgin' turns out to have been not a virgin after all.

I love the vomit scene from Bad Taste, there was pretty much no point to it. The concocution looked good, the creators even said it was.

Just watched TRAINING DAY.  Denzel Washington sticks a pen down Snoop Dogg's throat to make him puke up some crack rocks.  Not overly graphic, but not overdone either.

I'm sure there were more in the MOH movies, but I'd need to rewatch them.

Clerks 2

They didn't really show it though (this was the LOTR argument scene, right?) I did like that scene though. I especially liked Randal's imitation of all three LOTR movies. .

I found it to an facinating and intergal part of the story. It was the latchpin which binds several key elements of the film, helping to draw the viewer in, while only vaguely hinting at the imminent conclusion. It is the scene that takes the film to the greatness it has enjoyed: It's subtle, yet penetrating impact has reverberated virtually all facets of modern cinema, and has readily changed the course of film, setting a new, higher standard for future filmmakers to quest towards. . .

Interesting fact that popped up during an interview with Peter O'Herne, who played Barry.  David, a gent who used to help me out with proofreading, offered up a great question.  "What did the vomit consist of?"  Peter's reply was, "It was a mixture of yogurt, Muesli, and frozen vegetables. It didn't taste too bad actually, but that scene had everyone reaching for the airline bags."

Also, Mike, who played Frank, had to do multiple takes of him sipping from the bowl of vomit.  Peter said that was "a hoot."

Crap!
Everyone already named all the best ones I could think of!!
Yet, an honorable mention SHOULD be given to Monty Python Live, wherein Terry Gilliam improves on the original "Crunchy Frog" TV sketch by puling what looks like runny oatmeal into his helmet in the middle of the bit -- :buggedout:
I once had to do fake blood as a corpse in GEEKS!(1997 -- out of print/limited release -- Psychotronic Mag mentioned it/went nowhere)
but never fake vomit.  Fake blood, mostly Karo Syrup and glycerin, with Red Dye #5, could induce REAL vomit, thus rendering Fake Vomit useless!!

Sorry, I forgot these two:

Soldier Blue: Peter Strauss chucks his guts up at the end of the film after seeing the dead Native Americans.

Ronin: Sean Bean pukes on the sidewalk after the Seine battle ~ it could just be motion sickness because of Skip Sudduth's driving, but I don't know.  :teddyr:

In SA terms, the film Wild Season has a shot of someone in the wheelhouse of one of the fishing trawlers puking his guts up. This was not supposed to be in the film and the guy puking is the very sea-sick director of the film, Emil Nofal.  :teddyr:

Deep Rising, when Vivo and Billy make T-Ray puke (script excerpt courtesy of IMDB):

Vivo: [Trying to make T-Ray vomit] You know what I wanna eat? I'll take a couple of nice, greasy pig's feet, some pickled monkey brains and one of them big elephant eyeballs. Raw. So they pop when you bite into them.
[Imitates popping and slurping]
Billy: [Blows smoke into T-Rays face] Yummy.
[T-Ray vomits again and Vivo high-fives Billy]

It looks more like a spit spray to me, but when Lady Sylvia Marsh (Amanda Donohoe) spews venom all over the cross in "Lair of the White Worm," some people put it down as a vomiting scene.

And the  next morning, that eleven-year-old boy, who has been drugged and raped by his best friend's father, when staying overnight at their home, vomits all over the breakfast table, when he sits down for breakfast. "Happiness"

  Hi DistantJ.

The projectile vomiting in Scary Movie 3 happens when Jeremy Piven as Ross Giggins is showing problems happening in various parts of the world, he goes from Australia (showing close shots of horses defecating) to Brazil (dogs doing the wild thing) and to Texas where students are outside around a keg of beer and two of them laugh and proceed to vomit like spewing firehoses. In the same shot, there is an alien standing there with a beer in his hand.

I'm having breakfast now and I can't believe I'm typing this  :teddyr:

Gosh, Trevor, you seem . . . " . . . very keen on regurgitation!" . . .
Monty Python fan, are you?
Did you ever see the Peter Cushing/Doug McClure thing, "Journey to the Center of The Earth?  One of the key funny-lines in that is "I've got a firm grip on your trousers, Trevor!!".
You should see it if you haven't --

Yes, you can't call me The Prince of Puke just yet, but I'm getting there. I remember that film but I was probably about ten then.

The one TREVOR shock I got while viewing a film was when my good friend Charisse gave me a DVD copy of Hellraiser: HellSeeker and she told me to pay attention to what the chief bad guy's name was. I said, no problem, it's Pinhead, played by Doug Bradley.

She said no and that I should hear what Dean Winters' character is called in the film.

Nothing scarier than hearing Doug Bradley say "I used you, Trevor!"  :buggedout: :teddyr:

A movie I just did a review for (the Shaft) had the holy trinity: a urination scene, a vomit scene, and a birth scene. The review's in the review section of this site. The movie itself is still on fearnet as of this typing.
