My sister works as a Vet Tech and told me about a problem with the Beneful brand dog food several weeks ago. I know this is just coming out to papers now, but it actually has been an issue for a few weeks.

If I remember right, it was causing liver failure in some dogs.

My beloved little Dusty passed away at the end of January. He showed many of the symptoms mentioned in connection with this recall including turning yellow from liver problems, but he was on a dry food-only diet (and from a brand not on the recall list), so I don't think there was a connection. Still, having lost my best friend, my heart goes out to all those who have also lost cherished members of their family, cuz that what's pets can be.

It caused kidney failure and it was said to be because of some rat poison ... HOWEVER one of my running buddies is a Vet and he said that the poison listed should not cause kidney failure, it causes internal bleeding. So thinks it's something else they aren't telling people. He and a number of vets around the country have said this and they were going to send some of the food off for independent testing. To quote Don (the Vet) "somebodies blowing smoke up the consumers a$$, it don't add up."

I read it was rat poison also......You're right, they're full of poo-poo....People are starting to sue, they're even having their animals dug up to test them...At least that's what I heard.
Can you imagine how these people feel.....it's like they killed their own animals, feeding them poison. It's just plain sad.

Serves me right for listening to even a few minutes of Michael Savage the other day. He was playing up that the pet food was made manufactured in China, like the poisoning of pets was a way to thumb their noses at the US.

I'd buy sloppy processing and lack of concern for quality control, not high priorities in mainland China just like human rights violations, not the conspiracy he seemed to be trying to spin.

Menu Foods (the company in question) is made in Canada, the grain that they use comes from China ... which IMO in insane being that North America is the largest producer of grain in the world. WHY do you need to buy it from China. The chemicals used that they claim are causing the problems are banned and illegal in the US (not sure about Canada) So in reality they should ban the importation of this companies products (Menu Foods) into the US. Why anyone need to do business with China is beyond me.

My neighbor had to put down at least one of his pet cats due to liver failure. They're still not sure about the others; they seem okay, but they all ate the same food, which was part of the recall.

Here's the latest story ...

Quote
The Canadian company that sold tainted pet food blamed for at least 14 pet deaths expanded its product recall Saturday, saying it worried consumers could still find the products on store shelves.

Toronto-based Menu Foods said some of its pet foods, possibly tainted with a toxin used as rat poison, were still being sold.

The company said store owners should remove all of its products, regardless of the production date.

"As a result of reports from the FDA (US Federal Drug Administration) and various media outlets that some recalled lots of 'cuts and gravy' style wet pet food remain on store shelves, Menu Foods has asked all retail outlets to immediately remove all impacted varieties of wet pet food posted at www.menufoods.com, regardless of the date code," the company said in a statement.

"Menu Foods remains concerned that consumers are able to purchase recalled items," it said.

"There is no known risk from items not listed on the recall list but an abundance of caution is called for in this situation. FDA has been apprised of this action," it said.

Last week the Menu Foods recalled 60 million cans and pouches of food made in the United States and sold under 95 different brand names after reports that house pets were falling sick and dying after eating the some of their products.

On Friday US scientists in New York identified a toxin used for rat poison in the tainted pet food.

The toxin, called aminopterin, can cause cancers and birth defects in humans and kidney damage in cats and dogs.

Stephen Sundlof, who leads the US Food and Drug Administration's veterinary medicine center, said at least 14 pets have died from the tainted food.

Menu Foods President Paul Henderson said Friday the company would compensate owners of animals that died or became ill from its products, but did not know how the toxin got into their products.

ABC television reported that the toxin had been found in wheat imported from China used in the pet food.

Several lawsuits have been filed in US and Canadian courts following the pet deaths.

Thanks for the update CheezeFlixz, I only feed our animals dry food now. We had some Mighty Dog Cans and they said it was only the pouches....not taking any chances. Our pets are like our children, we become very attached.

Thanks for the clarification, Cheezeflixz. There was no mention of Canada from Savage the other day. I really should avoid listening to that creep.

But I agree, the US and Canada are major wheat producers and exporters, is Chinese wheat so cheap that it can be imported cheaper than buying domestic sources?
