Title: So what is your FAVORITE top 3 Sci-Fi space Show?
Post by: CheezeFlixz on March 20, 2007, 10:16:05 AM
OK I know I left off a lot as there are so many, but these tend to hit near the top of most list. So what is your favorite Sci-Fi top 3 space adventure show. Not your Twilight Zone Sci-Fi but the outer space aliens gonna getcha shows.

For me I tend to like those that are more "realistic" - realistic problems, realistic issues, realistic emotions. Not the prefect world dream vision of some shows.

Which do you like and why?

I never watched any of these show "faithfully" but here my top 3:

Star Trek: TOS-  They used to have marathons with the original and watched them all the time. I always enjoyed the original.

Star Trek TNG: I watched this with my grandmother all the time so it has a special place.

Stargate SG-1: Other one I love to catch on a Sat or Sun. Been getting into Atlantis too.

I like Star Trek DS9 but never caught to many episodes.

The two greatest space shows ever. Star Trek: TOS and Star Trek: TNG. I also selected Space:1999.

You have Space 1999, but no UFO???

That's my favorite, btw, so selected "Other."

From the list, I picked ST TOS and TNG.  I probably would have included the new BG if I'd seen more episodes (I've seen two); same comment for Farscape (I've only seen one episode, but it was engaging).  I also like the original BG, too - if I'm in the right mood.

OK, I didn't choose either of these since I haven't seen them yet, but I'm preetty sure that someone's gonna mention Red Dwarf or Lexx eventually.

B-5.  JMS did real well here, creating a thinking SF show, with a nice blending of heavy episodes and light ones.
BG - New.  In the same vein as B-5; a bit too heavy all the time though.
Dr. Who - Original (the various BBC incarnations, I assume).  Good cheese.

Space 1999, close runner up.

well I didn't list mine... so here in no order.

Farscape - (excellent, albeit season 4 was weak.)
Babylon 5 - (Early eps weak and season 5 weak, other than that, great)
Firefly - (Killed off way to soon, this show was going to go be great, then poof gone!)

All of them are extra excellent overall!

I like some of the Star Trek shows mainly, DS9 but the other tend to be to nicy-nice the world is wonderful and we are so enlightened, a bit preachy at times. If I had to put them in order ...

DS9 (All around good show)
TNG (Data's cool and Dr Crusher is HOT)
TOS (Just gotta love the original cast, Kirk, Spock, Bones and Scotty)
Voyager (If it wasn't for 7 of 9 I'd never turn it on, she's from my hometown and she is smokin' hot, the Doc is funny too)
Enterprise (It was so painfully out of place, it's the prequel to TOS and looks more advance. What's up with that?)

Stargate's either one are OK not great but watchable why it went on for 10 years is beyond me.

Many others I excellent too, but damn I got work sometimes.

Speaking of which ....

I picked only one from the list,LOST in SPACE.( I like the cheezy monsters and the chemistry of Dr.Smith,"young Robinson" and Robot.
I'm surprised you didn't list the X Files,or the old OUTER LIMITS.(Both of which I enjoyed as well.)
Others from the past....
JOURNY to the BOTTOM of the SEA
TIME TUNNEL
LAND of the GIANTS
the HULK
SCIENCE FICTION THEATER
MAX HEADROOM
BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA
BUCK ROGERS in the 21st CENTURY
the INVISABLE MAN(remember, that one from the 70's,withthat blonde guy from MAN rom U.N.C.L.E.?)
PLANET of the APES
ROBOCOP

Babylon 5 - I loved the story arc format.  Great characters, epic struggle, you name it.  The last season was kind of a waste though.

Battlestar Galactica (original) - Cheesy, yes, but I love those characters and the special effects were better than anything I see today.

Farscape - really loved this show at first, but then at the end of season 3 the Sci-Fi Channel went 9 months without showing a new episode, and I sort of lost interest.

Also Like Star Trek TOS, I grew up with it.  Space 1999 is cool just for how weird it is, it has a lot of boring episodes but the good ones are worth it.  Firefly was pretty cool.  Buck Rogers in the 25th Century is another favorite, total cheese but damn those babes are hot!  All space babes should wear spandex disco jeans - it should be like a law or something  :teddyr:  Also liked LEXX, especailly when that blond babe was on it.  I'll add an addenum to the law about space babes and spandex disco jeans - teensy-weensy mini skirts are okay too.

If you mean continuing series, then it's definitely both versions of DOCTOR WHO, although technically the new Doctor really is a continuation of the old and Classic STAR TREK. If you were to include anthology series, OUTER LIMITS and TWILIGHT ZONE (ORIGINALS) would beat everything else period.

I'd go woth Doctor Who, Star Trek DS9 and Babylon 5, though as an admitted Scifi/Space Opera nut, I love all the shows mentioned

I agree if there was a Sci-Fi/Space Opera channel that aired nothing but Space Adventure shows and movies only. I'd never get anything done. I have 2 long shelves of nothing but space type movies and shows.

Oh I forgot ... Tripping the Rift - adult cartoon space show, but cool. I think I had dreams about "SIX"

I chose Star Trek TOS and TNG.

My 3rd choice was Lost in Space.
I used to watch that all the time as a kid.

As Mr. Briggs guessed, someone (namely me) is mentioning Red Dwarf. It is one of my favorite sci-fi shows if for no other reason than it is fun and unique. I actually read the two Red Dwarf novels before I had ever heard of the TV show. I enjoyed them, so when I saw that they were based on a tv show, I had to see it. We had BBC America on satellite, so I got to watch it for a while. It was cool while it lasted, and I'm still considering buying the DVDs.

My other choices were Star Trek: TOS and Star Trek: TNG. I watched a few of the other series, including the original Battlestar Galactica, Space 1999, and the other Star Trek series, but those are my favorites from the list.

Other favorites that are missing from the list are Max Headroom and Buck Rogers (mmmmm, Wilma  :teddyr:).

Everyone who's ever seen it seems has great things to say about THE INVADERS. Me, I've never seen it but I sure do wish I could.

 :buggedout: (and shudder)

I will never forget that episode of UFO where a UFO scientist's wife goes missing, a UFO is shot down and the post mortem of the alien reveals that he has some of the missing wife's organs implanted in him. Thanks, ulthar, some karma for you.  :teddyr:

I love the OS Star Trek, Dr Who and the eerie The Omega Factor which sometimes crossed the line from outright horror to science fiction.

I also remember having a HUGE crush on Erin Grey ~ those spandex trousers, ooh mamma!

TOS - I'm loving the remastered version they are showing in syndication.

DS - The hands down best of all the modern Trek's, but it never gets it's due.  I'm watching it over on DVD.

Babylon 5 - A great space opera of the old pulp style.  I just watched it all again on DVD at the end of last year.

I also think Firefly would be going strong if Fox had not screwed the show over. It's a great show.

Space: Above and Beyond is another one I enjoyed and which FOX killed by jumping it all over the schedule.

If you've never seen Firefly ... you need to if you like space shows. What happened to that show is a shame, they aired it out of order (The DVD's are in order) they didn't even air the last 3 shows. They moved it around and you could never find it and they preempted it about every other week when you could. So it was canned after 14 eps. then the movie took forever to get made to tie up the loose ends. It never had a chance and was unique as the old west meets space travel.

I think that it was killed off by some of the absurd story arcs.  I mean, do you remember the episode with Coolio?

I voted for the original Doctor Who, Farscape, and The Prisoner (other). Farscape was great until the last season, and the wrapping up miniseries was rushed in tone, and had a few cliches I hated, but at least they got to finish. I hate when stories take the "get back to contemporary Earth" path like the last season, since we are so outclassed in technology, you write yourself into a corner or have to invoke magic or sometimes similar. I loved how they played around with cliches of scifi stories, like the body swapping ep where characters of different genders seized the opportunity to "explore". My kind of space opera for not playing by the rules most of the time.

The Prisoner is awesome in it mix of 60s pop spy culture, surrealism and Kafkaesque paranoia.

Doctor Who was fun and quirky and at its best made me look past the cheap effects and other limits.

I like many of the other series, some more than others. Firefly gets an honorable mention since it was so great the way it was going, but doesn't get the vote since it never got show what they could do over time. B5 I tried to get into, but the first season was shaky and it got moved around on the syndicated schedule so it was hard to find, the jump to cable was weird too. I wish Crusade had gotten more of a shot, it had potential, especially the ep. poking fun of the X-Files, since I never that show much. I like the Treks up until half way through DS9.

Red Dwarf was a hoot, so glad our PBS station ran it for so long, too bad I began to take it for granted they would keep airing it.

I'd still like to actually see if Blake's 7 is all it's cracked up to be. Never seen more than clips of it.

I never got into any of the major ones, but my three favorite space shows (and I never really even watched these all that much) are Red Dwarf, Tripping the Rift, and Farscape.

Star Trek, TNG is still my all-time favorite of the franchise, with DS9 coming in a close second.  Though, the early episodes of TNG left a little to be desired.  The whole look and feel of the show when it started just didn't seem right.  I hate to say it, but the point when it got better was after Tasha Yar died.

I also like the new Doctor Who a lot.  I was afraid it would jump the shark after Christopher Eccelston left after just one season, but luckily David Tennant has really stepped up, and proven himself worthy of the role.

Farscape: Great, fun Sci-fi series with PUPPETS!!  I met some of the people in charge of special effects [it was filmed in Australia] and they were all really interesting, passionate and fun people.

Stargate [Both forms]: Merging my love of Ancient Mythology with Sci-Fi made this show genius.  Lagged off near the end [Ori bullocky] but I can't help but loving the entire thing.  At one stage was my favourite show in general, but it's become harder and harder to keep track [they don't screen it here really at all]

Firefly: If it wasn't for the charisma of the characters, this show would have slipped by me.  Never really screened here, I picked up the DVDs on a whim from the Uni Library because it was by Joss Whedon, and haven't looked back since.

I think I'd really like Battlestar Galactica [new series] but just haven't been able to watch a full episode, so it's passed me by really.

Enjoy various Star Trek joints but none really took me in like the above selections did.  Dr Who is also good for an occasional watch.

Oh and how could I finish this up without even making mention of the excellent and hilarious Red Dwarf...

Star Trek TOS without a doubt.  I love Sci-fi B-movies of the 50's and 60's, and every episode of the original Star Trek series is like watching a great mini B-movie of that era.  It's great stuff.  I can't stand any of the other Star Trek series', and find them to be painfully dull and boring.  The "Trekkies" out there make a big deal out of how the later series' are closer to Gene Roddenberry's original vision for the show.  If that is true, I think the network execs were right when they told him to make changes!

I picked Star Trek TOS, Star Trek Deep Space 9, and Star Trek Enterprise. I liked the original because I am a sci-fi fan and a series with a starship was just what the doctor ordered. The effects were about what you'd expect from a 60's TV series, but the stories were good and so was the acting. I was disappointed when it was cancelled. I started watching DS9 because it started coming on at 4:30 AM Monday thru Friday and I was up and didn't leave for work till 6:00 AM, eventually this caught me up to the weekly episodes and I started watching in the evening too. Enterprise is one I like because I find the whole idea of being the first humans to really explore the galaxy fascinating (didn't mean to sound like Spock), it's something I wish I could do, and the effects are quite good, that also makes it enjoyable for me. It's less enjoyable for the wife, every Monday the Sci-Fi network shows 4 episodes back to back, watching these sometimes makes the little woman a little crazy.

There is one other, when I was much younger on Saturday mornings I would watch "Commando Cody, Sky Marshall of the Universe". This guy had a rocket ship, ray guns, a rocket pack, used to fly around in a black leather jacket with a pair of rockets on the back, wore a pointed helmet to be aerodynamic. Used to fight with enemy aliens on the ground, in the air, and in outer space, I really loved that show.

I went for DS9, Farscape and Babylon 5

Am not really a SF buff, never really liked ST:TOS or TNG etc.

I really enjoyed Firefly, but that bit the dust after only 1 season; Farscape was a blast, especially Scorpius. I might just get round to watching that again soon.
