Title: The Warriors (1979)
Post by: Scott on April 06, 2007, 09:50:26 PM
THE WARRIORS (1979) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0080120/) - Revisited this film after seeing  it on TV many years ago. It's even better than I remember it as I had forgotten the story. It's a rather simple story of a falsely accused gang called The Warriors who are blamed for the shooting of the unifying charismatic gang leader during a major gang rally in the Bronx. After that The Warriors have to get back to Coney Island and pass some tough turf and the police. What I forgot about is the neat comic book scene transitions and how "cool" the whole film was. Our local Ma & Pa video store had a new DVD of this film so I rented it.

(9 out of 10 Stars)   This recent viewing puts this film in the top 10 for me.

There are a number of films about city gangs or mobs.

The Warriors
Escape From New York
Fort Apache The Bronx
Assault on Precinct 13

Scott, you left out The Wanderers and The Lords of Flatbush, both are good movies, worth watching if you can find them.

Scott, for a twist, check out Sol Yurick's novel (http://www.amazon.com/Warriors-Sol-Yurick/dp/0802139922/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-1098217-9890253?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175919512&sr=1-2).  It's much more post-apocalyptic in setting and mighty meaner in tone.

This latest edition that surfaced a few years ago has nice intro by Yurick where he talks a little about the film and his intentions with transplanting Xenophon.

ps...I still haven't forgiven myself for missing the showing at Coney last year.  Netflix sponsored an outdoor showing with a good amount of the cast there.

This is pretty much right up there in the listings for favourite movie.  It's great fun!

Haven't seen the director's cut though, with the comic book cut scenes [?]

Much of an improvement?

I saw it a few months ago for the very first time and was very impressed at how well the whole settings, music and editing stand after all this years. The opening alone, with Barry De Vorzon music and the various gangs travelling towards the meeting, is fantastic and filled with me with anticipation.

And the rest is equally neat, from the minimal (but working) caracter description or the energetic brawls. It's became one of my favourite 70s action movies, and it's easily one of the best films Walter Hill has ever made.

I recently heard Tony Scott is planning a remake. I sincerely hope he never gets to make it. The original is now as fresh as it probably was 28 years ago, and Tony Scott will probably ruin evry single one of its virtues.

"Can you dig it?"

Yeah, I heard the same thing with Tony Scott.

I really do think that in this [and many other 'remake' movies] it's probably more worthwhile, to me at least, that you just make a movie inspired by, rather than directly referencing, a movie.

I mean, it'd be kind of difficult to make a gang movie like the Warriors now, since we're not quite so 70s/80s and totally tacky.  But it would be nice to see a similar movie in a modern context.  There's no need to call it 'The Warriors'.  I mean I'd love to just see random gang-fight action regardless...

Most folks who've seen the Director's Cut usually don't seem to like it as much as the original version.

I have the new one on dvd and when the scene changes they made into a"comic book". I have to say it is distracting and wish it wasn't thier.

The game is awesome.  Being a little apprehensive about plunking down cash for videogames, I rented it first and after about an hour I jumped back in the car, told Blockbuster I couldn't get it to load, got another game and blow over to gamestop to buy The Warriors.

They did such a good job capturing the feeling of the film.  The settings, the use of music from the film, even the original game music worked well.  The voice work from Michael Beck and James Remar was fabulous.  Usually games based on movies tend to suck pitifully...but this was just incredible.  Coming from Rockstar, I'm not really surprised though.

Gotta say though, I finally busted my PS2 controller with that game.  Having to rotate the thumbsticks to 'unscrew' the car stereos you're robbing took a tremendous toll on it.

While there was nothing more fun than busting a car window, lifting the radio proved
that crime not only doesn't pay...in fact, it can cost you a controller!

It's being remade for next year. They are keeping Walter Hill's screenplay, but instead of Walter Hill directing it, they are going to go with director Tony Scott.

And, oh yes, they are moving the film from New York to Los Angeles.

A local theater has a midnight show of this on Saturday.  They're offering free admission to anyone who dresses like one of the gang members.

Yeah, Baxter Avenue Theater is showing it.  And I was wrong, it's not until the 28th.  A Clockwork Orange is tomorrow.  I went to their midnight show of Brazil recently and it was wonderful (although not too crowded).  Another cool thing is that some local t-shirt designer folks sell custom t-shirts for $10 at each midnight show.

Here's ther "Summer S'plodin' Series" lineup (the idea being more action oriented films):

May 12 - Terminator 2: Judgement Day
May 26 - Conan the Barbarian
June 9 - Batman (1989)
June 30 - They Live
July 14 - Jurassic Park
July 28 - Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
August 11 - Robocop
August 25 - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
September 15 - Team America: World Police
September 29 - Aliens

I'm going to They Live for sure.
