Title: Bandidas (2006)
Post by: Scott on April 10, 2007, 11:57:57 PM
BANDIDAS (2006) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0416496/) - Good little Western starring Selma Hyatt and Penelope Cruz as two Mexican women who had fathers murdered for their land by U.S. bank and railroad goons. One is a rich girl and the other a poor farm girl, but they manage to get together to fight the bad guys. At first they didn't like each other then they learned a lot from each other becoming friends. This is a film that the two actresses decided to make since they always wanted to do a movie together. They had a lot of fun making this film that seems to have been shown only in latin theaters and was unknown to me till I saw it on our Blockbuster shelve. It's much better than the other more recent female Western GANG OF ROSES (2003) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0339091/). BANDIDAS is just a plain fun film and it's a pleasure seeing the two stars play their roles even if the film misses a few notes.

(7 out of 10 Stars)  This film may become one of those lost films that find a small following one day.

I'm a huge fan of Salma Hayek (and not really because of her acting either  ).  Not so much of Penelope Cruz.

A friend of mine said that this movie was fun if you turned your brain completely off.

Mildly entertaining.  It did seem like the writers/directors didn't know how to handle the sexuality of the two leads...  There's one scene of them as sort of show girls/prostitutes, and otherwise it is totally straight as far as that sort of things go.  Felt almost random the way they handled.

The film also has, for lack of a better word, poor connective tissue.  The narrative chain of events is loosely connected and a lot of the time stuff just happens to fill in the storyline.  The climactic battle is also very lame pseudo-bulletime BS.  Zahn's character is also underused.

All in all, I'd give it a 6/10.

Well stated JimH. In the extras on the DVD the girls said they always wanted to do a film together and they got some people together  who also liked the idea of them doing a Western movie and so it came to be. A little more effort and they might have had a real winner there and the money and production values seemed to be there, but again it did miss a few notes. The bedroom scene was fun. It was interesting that the girls wanted to do this scene. Good for them. It was a pleasure despite the films drawbacks and you can see the whole thing is captured in the expression of the girls in the final image that was freeze framed at the end.

No matter how you pimp this one, Scott, I'm not watching it.  :tongueout:

It has "stinker" written all over it and I'm not a big fan of neither half of the duo.. although I'd date Salma if she lost her mind and asked me out.

BTW, I'm still watching westerns, so here's a couple of recommendations, they're made for TV stuff but pretty good ones: "Grey Night" and "The Colt". Both are set in the American Civil War, but are not historical films.

I also have about 5 Westerns sitting on my shelve waiting to be viewed. All Spaghetti Westerns I beleive.

I finally found myself an uncut version of Sergio Sollima's "Run Man Run". I'll see if I can watch it this week.

Uncut? I wonder if my version of RUN MAN RUN  is uncut?

The full verson is around 2 hours (maybe a bit more in NTSC timing), but all Spanish versions are 80', with the plot being completely incomprehensible.

Finally rented this the other day. I liked it for the bit of fluff with hotties it was. Even Luc Besson couldn't screw this up too much, but the bullet time fight was pushing it. Dwight Yoakum was having a ball chewing the scenery and hamming it up in his costume. Steve Zahn was good, could have used more from his role, and none of his (or the body double's) nudity - although the up/down/up/down exchange was pretty cute. Wish they had done more with Sam Shepherd as well, at least they didn't go the obvious route and "kill off the mentor" like many movies do.

I got what I expected and my money's worth.

Strangely when I rented it the girl at the counter pointed out the disc was scratched, when I asked her about getting another one, she said all their copies of it were scratched up. Guess it's popular, but it played fine. Might have to pick up a copy when it gets cheap.

Yaddo it was a pleasure to see the two stars on film together and I'd like to see them do something else together. It looked like they spent just a little more than usual to make this Western. The jump off the bridge was pretty good special effect.

A friend of mine is supposed to be letting me borrow a copy of Bandidas.  but I haven't heard from him in a couple of weeks so I'll probably just end up renting it.

Ditto that ... it was fun if you just watch it and not really think about it .. so much fun I got it on one of those Blockbusters sidewalk sale for $2.00

A fun little B movie. Though I think that they should have gone for a R rating instead of a more watered down PG-13 version.

Was anything edited out for the PG-13 version?

Finally got to see it. Not a very good movie (I hate when people shoot westerns the way they would shoot anything for TV - Show the genre some respect!) but had its share of fun moments (the first bank robbery, the gals "raping" Steve Zahn) and was overall quite entertainning.

To Yaddo43: Yeah, I'd also wanted to see more of Sam Shepard. He's a fine actor and when he finally pops up in mainstream stuff - like in "Blackhawk Down"- he barely gets screentime
