Title: The most weirdest/dumbest monster you've ever seen?
Post by: flackbait on April 17, 2007, 08:33:52 PM
So whats the weirdest/dumbest monster you've ever seen?

For me it's probably the rat-bat-spider thing in The Angry Red Planet.

Ro-man from ROBOT MONSTER . . . gorilla suit and diving helmet with TV antennae?  At 5 years of age I laughed at that one.  Talk about dumb.

The Creature from the Haunted Sea
(http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q122/DENNISDURWARDHAMMOND/creature-hauntedsea.jpg)
Besides looking goofy, in one underwater scene you can see that it's wearing Levis and swim fins.

The title aliens in Larry Buchanan's Attack of the the Eye Creatures.

While the one pictured isn't too bad, it's the aliens that only have a head and that are wearing skin-tight black outfits to hide the fact that there wasn't enough full costumes to go around, that are the goofy looking ones.

From Larry Buchanan:

Used by Buchanan in both "It's Alive" and in a slightly altered variation in "Creature of Destruction".

LOL! Larry Buchanan might pop up more in this thread. The Mutant from In The Year 2889 was pretty bad as well. Ditto the monster in the Zontar the Thing from Venus remake.

Damn it, Shadow beat me to the punch on the Eye Creatures. My favorite MST3K segment stems from that movie and consisted of Joel and the bots disecting just why the movie's makers "just didn't care". It also features the memorable cut of the film whose title card actually reads "Attack of the the Eye Creatures".

So, I'm gonna have to pull out Rock 'N' Roll Nightmare's rubber starfish demons (http://www.badmovies.org/multimedia/movies6/rrnightmare1.mpg).

Them, or that movie's lead demon... or the hilariously bad beast from Master of Evil...

.... I just had a weird thought: Godzilla Vs. Emmanuelle

You wouldn't by chance be refering to Night Crawlers would you, because I have a longstanding grudge with that movie and one of these days it will either kill me or I will wipe all known recordings of it from the face of the Earth...  :hatred:

This is a tough one.  The beast from "It's Alive" and the monster from "The Creature from the Haunted Sea" are both good choices.  Ro-Man is always hard to beat, ditto with the Blood Freak.  I guess the problem is that it is easy to go with the one that required the least effort to create...

The aliens from ALIENS FROM SPACE.

You have to mean "Killers from Space."  Those eyeballs always crack me up.  Nathan has a review for this one on his site:

That mutant blobby creature from BRIDES OF BLOOD.

The suit is awful, but I think that the monster is actually rather interesting so it gets away with being a vague, horribly painted blob.  I am actually working on a review for "Brides of Blood" right now.

Guiron from Guiron vs Gamera 1969 he looked funny.
off the subject about Gamera , Godzilla ... Q: Is Kadokawa/Daiei really planning to make Godzilla vs Gamera?
A: At this point Kadokawa is no longer trying to get this feature made. They are however focusing on some really great properties like YOKAI DAISENSO (a remake of the 1968 original) and apparently a new Gamera film!

That get's my number one vote... Thanks, Akiratubo- I'd seen that one before but couldn't remember the name.

Guilala gets second place and Guiron comes in third. Gappa deserves honorable mention for reminding me of the winged monkeys in The Wizard of Oz. The Guardian from Prince of Space seems tame and ordinary by comparision.

After reading your review, I have to say that I really empathize with you. Only someone who's been subjected to the Polonias' brand of anti-acting & nauseatingly dull story telling can truly understand the kind of sheer hatred one developes for these guys & everything they stand for.

Okay, here goes: The boxed set to which I refer is called Galaxy of Terror, not to be confused with the Roger Corman classic http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082431/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082431/) whose name they blaspheme!

The stinkers in this boxed set include:
Dinosaur Chronicles http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0491761/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0491761/)
Preylien: Alien Predators http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0491801/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0491801/)
The Weapon (Not Listed)
Blood Red Planet http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0275229/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0275229/)

Now, certain things could've been excused, such as the guy in a baggy bear suit & a skiing vest, the Halloween masks, the hand puppets, the toy motocycle helmets for spacesuits...
But Mark & John Polonia take production values to an all new low, using sanding goggles & dust masks for spacesuits, and two different kinds of really stupid spiders: The first being a nerf ball with pipe cleaners stuck in it, with a toilet snake for fangs, the second spider being, uh, well, a glove.
Also, I can understand when financial, legal or insurance issues prohibit the use of decent prop guns, but these guys use those kinds of water pistols you only find at the Dollar Tree.

Combine all this with the afformentioned non-acting & no-story-to-tell storytelling, & you've got an inexcusable affront to the visual arts that would make Larry Buchanan look like a genious.

I'd like to give the Beach Ball Alien from DARKSTAR an honorable mention for creativity on a budget.  It is not ridiculous like some of those listed, but it is pretty funny and obvious.

As for the dumbest?  Of those listed so far, I'd have to include my vote for Mogunetudon.  I laughed for about ten minutes when I saw that, along iwth akiratubo's comment "Your eyes do not deceive you.  He does, in fact, have a catfish for an a$$."

Title: Re: The most weirdest/dumbest monster you've ever seen?
Post by: Raffine on April 19, 2007, 07:53:07 AM
My vote has to go to Mogunetudon, too.

Diving helmet-wearing gorillas, giant chicken-dinosaurs from the stars, and walking trees are all ridiculous, but that catfish head for a butt creature takes the cake.

"Monster Archives" has further info on this beastie:

Powers:

Flame Breath - Though not resembling true fire, Mogunetudon can expel a white mist like flame from its maw.

Talons - Each of Mogunetudon’s hands have several mammoth sized claws for which to do melee battle with

Second Head - Located on the monster’s tail end is a catfish like second head, which can bite and attack when need be.

Burrowing - Mogunetudon can tunnel underground and cause massive earthquakes.

I'd like to see the expression on some Mississippi noodler who stcks his arm in a swamp hole and comes up with this.

FYI: 'Noodling' is the practice of sticking one's arm into underwater swamp holes in the hopes a big catfish will clamp down on it. Withdraw your arm and there's your dinner!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noodling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noodling)

EDIT!: The complete Spectreman "Gallery of Monsters" illustrates having a catfish head for a butt is pretty much par for the course in that universe.

Wow.  Some phenomenal critters out there.

I have to vote for the mangy carpet monster from The Creeping Terror too.  The thing flops along looking like a wounded shag carpet escaping after a bad frat party.

My memory may have embroidered it but I fondly recall glimpsing several sets of tennis shoes underneath providing locomotion, as well as one of the 'victims' reaching up and lifting the leading edge of the carpet - er, orifice - over her in order to facilitate being swallowed.  Hard to beat for 'dumb' factor.

Here's a YouTube clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLTUV1RitPM&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Epopmatters%2Ecom%2Fpm%2Fblogs%2Fshortends%5Fpost%2F5862%2Fdepth%2Dof%2Dfield%2Dauteur%2Dtheory%2Dgodmonster%2Dof%2Dindian%2Dflats%2F)

JUST IMAGINE

That movie's a hoot! It's from 1930 and I'm guessing the first sci-fi musical, with lots of pre-code naughtiness. The star is El Brendel an odd comedian with a terrible fake Swedish accent who goes into suspended animation and wakes up in the distant year 1980. Names have been replaced with letters and numbers like "LN-18" and "RT-21" (get it?) and everybody flies around in little personal airplanes and buys babies out of vending machine. Part of the movie is set on Mars, where that fellow in the picture lives.  There a several really terrible/hilarious big musical numbers, some of them by Martians. One really promising number featuring Martain maidens in monkey suits is unfortunately interupted by some evil Martians. Maureen O'Sullivan is the heroine and appears as a big "singing" head in telescope.

It's never been released on VHS or DVD but turns up (or used to) on the Fox Movie Channel every once in a while so there's probably bootleg DVD-Rs around. Required viewiing!

Oh God, that Piñata movie is on AMC all of the time (it was on last night, actually).  They've betrayed their name (American Movie Classics) for a long time, now.

I cannot view it from here, but will guess that the clip is of the women waltzing with the monster.  I never quite understood that part either.

You know, the werewolf from "Monster Dog" probably deserves a mention.  It ended up looking like a plastic head on a stick.
