Title: Earth Day!
Post by: Andrew on April 22, 2007, 06:52:06 AM
Today is Earth Day!  I have another thread to post, but wanted to mention one reason I really like where we live in Baltimore.  They do, by default, curbside recycling of glass, plastic, and paper/cardboard products.  Every night, after dinner, Jenna and Andy know that they get to carry the recyclables out to the containers on the deck.  We put them out on Monday night for Tuesday morning pickup.  Sadly, I have noticed that a number of our neighbors do not participate.  Maybe today I will get a chance to mention it to them.

Also, to cut down on food trash, we bought a tumbling composter.  It dramatically cuts down on the amount of kitchen scraps we throw out.  The benefit is that the product is rich compost that I can introduce to the backyard area.  When they built this townhouse development, it appears they scraped the topsoil, laid back a thin (maybe 1") layer, seeded it, then sold the rest of the soil.  The richest part of the lawn is the area right under the composter, obviously from the nutrient-rich fluids that leak out.

Last, but not least, we have a small lawn.  Our lawnmower is the old-fashioned push kind - not gasoline driven, but person driven.  It is pretty darn cool as it has a multiplying gear.  The rotary cutters turn much more quickly than you are pushing it.

I just wanted to say, that they do the same in the city, where I live. If you want to participate, there are two different garbage bins. One for recyclable products 9paper, metal, cardboard, etc. )And one for everything else that cannot be recyclable. I would also add, I do not know how much top soil was scraped off, but for inch of topsoil they did scrape off, they scraped off 500 years. As it, apparently, takes that long for one inch of topsoil to form.
