Title: For trekgeezer ~ Praxis???
Post by: Trevor on April 25, 2007, 01:50:44 AM
 :bouncegiggle:

I've been at a conference at the Nelson Mandela Foundation www.nelsonmandela.org (http://www.nelsonmandela.org) in Johannesburg for the last two days and it was the usual thing of people who know more than the other person taking a opportunity to whale on their colleagues and to use words that are longer than marmalade.

Anyhow, you get the scene ~ people basking in their glow of contentment and spouting forth on subjects that are so exhilarating you wish someone would drop a car on your head ~ until one person started emoting on the peripheral continuum of a archive document's Praxis.  :buggedout: :buggedout: :buggedout:

That last word brought out the schoolboy in me and I laughed. The audience was a little stunned and the person said "Whoever laughed at that, what is so funny?" My Chief Director also wanted to know why I laughed, so I explained to them that Praxis is a Klingon planet in Star Trek.

Collapse of tetchy audience.  :teddyr:

Actually...
Praxis was a Klingon moon.

Here's an interesting page on Praxis.
Tons of details.

I actually get a pretty good laugh out of people trying to explain the science of Star Trek. You should go on some of the Trek boards and watch some of the discussions, those people are nuts.

I used to post on some Trek boards.  I'll never forget the time a guy got banned from the board because he was angrily threatening to hack into someone else's computer.  The reason?  A disagreement over the length of a starship.  One guy thought it was 345 meters long, the other guy 400 or something.  It wasn't even the Enterprise, it was some ship that had appeared for 1.5 seconds in an episode of Deep Space 9 and 2.5 seconds in one of the movies.
