Title: "karma points" biz...
Post by: zombie no.one on May 04, 2007, 07:32:27 PM
Im slightly intrigued by the concepy of "karma points" on this board, thats something Ive never come across before. at the time of writing this, I appear to have 4 karma points. I dont know who gave them to me, or why... is it some sort of unwritten secret code that if you see a post by someone and you really think they gave some kind of useful or radical input then you give them a karma point? but do you tell them though..do you say "yo word, Ive clicked on your karma status buddy"... or would that be embarrassing and out of place? to be honest it makes no bones with me if my karma goes into minus figures, in fact that would in some ways be better than having 4 plus points. this is "bad" movie.com after all, do we like villains or what. turn me into a -52 karma points having freak, damnit!

I don't think much of it, i've been on this board for years, made thousands of post and have 26 karma points.

apparently my posts aren't very enlightening..lol :twirl:

yeah but to my knowledge it only came in when the board got overhauled about 2 months ago...

hmmm.

would you like another karma point, susan?

I think that WyreWizard has a patent for negative karma.

In general, the karma system is just something for us all to have fun with.  If it ever hurts the board, I would remove it.  Besides, I sort of like watching Menard and Ash go ballistic when someone boos them.

There might be a mod for this new version of the forum that makes it so people actually leave behind a comment when they change your karma.  Stuff like "Funny post - you made me laugh" or "Yur r3t@rd3d!"  Eh, maybe the latter example is a poor one.

Susan, I think you were away when the karma system was turned on and have not been on as much until lately.  You certainly have been here a long time.  I wouldn't worry much about it in the light of that.  It is not as if we had "Susan is not here!" parties while you were away.

I wouldn't say there's "an unwritten secret code" but certain courtesies seem to have developed around when points are awarded.

Seeking negative karma points usually involves behavior that gets the word "troll" thrown around, or just being belligerent or fixated in the tone of your posts. Andrew has a point, do a search for topics started by WyreWizard sometime, who has a style all his own.

If you really don't care about it, then follow Susan's lead and ignore it. I'm honestly surprised sometimes when I gain points and it's not explained why to me. I've lost a few points along the way, I'm guessing for jokes I've made that maybe offended some other posters. Again I was surprised, but it didn't break my heart, just reminded me that there are some subjects that are touchy for other people.

And I thought we drank so much we blacked out and forgot that we had "Susan is not here!" parties?

I think I gave negative Karma twice...once to wille and once to a salesman....
I can't understand how I got so many...I guess being a babbling fool is a karma freindly.

Lotsa times I'll just be reading along, and bust out laffing at something,or see a cool picture, and give karma points..lotta times I don't say why,cuz I can't really don't know how to explain why I find certain things funny or interesting.

I haven't been 'booed' in awhile as I seemed to have mellowed a bit lately.

Usually, I only give karma when something makes me laugh out loud.   :bouncegiggle:

I usually use the karma as a tool when I think there's been a particularly good post or a good point being made [or the flipside of course]

I give it sporadically, but it's a handy tool for essentially giving a digital pat on the back for a job well done.

Incidentally I'm also one of the ones who raises and lowers Ash/Menards Karma for laughs when the situation arises, but always restore them to their rightful place, since I'm a guilty son-of-a...   :teddyr:

Of course then there's the truly awful posts that deserve good karma: smutty humour, bad lines etc.

I don't even know how to display the "applaud" / "boo hiss" things underneath my avatar but people still give me karma.

I actually feel sorry for WyreWizard and was thinking about giving him a positive karma a day for the next 10 days, then he'll at least have a 0 karma.

That somehow a post I meant for another thread ended up in this one?  Weirdness, I will move it over now.

Trevor, none of us can see our own applaud/boo,hiss links.

That would actually disappoint Wee Willie. He is an attention seeker who gets a kick out of his negative karma; not to mention that he has totally earned it.

Personally I like the idea of karma, I give it to people who post things that I enjoy, only gave negative ones to WW, and now I've stopped doing that because he's not worth the effort. All in all I think it's a good feature

The karma lets me know if someone actually read something I wrote. A lot of places I go, it feels like nobody read what I have put my heart and soul into.  :bouncegiggle: This way I know if someone has read it and either liked it or not liked it. I have been coming here a little less often lately and my karma hasn't moved.........Which I expect to happen, but now I'm here today so it should move maybe 1/2, at least.......maybe.......if.........you.......want.......Just kidding.  :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:

The karma lets me know if someone actually read something I wrote.

Same here.

Oftentimes, I'll get karma points awarded to me and not have any idea why it was given or who gave it.

I used to purposely write threads here that I thought were guaranteed to get me a point or two and most times, they did.
Sometimes they didn't.
(remember, I was at -1 karma not 6 months ago)

But nowadays I don't try to do that anymore and I still seem to receive karma from out of nowhere for posts that I never thought were karma-worthy.

My thanks to you who gave me positive karma.

I am one of the ones who is guilty of giving karma without telling the person. I've received karma without knowing who or why also. Today I came here and oops, I'm missing a karma and would really like to know why. I don't feel I've down anyone any harm or put something to hurt someone to make them upset enough to remove a karma. Now I would like to know why.  :buggedout:

Well, ya ain't missing a point now. :teddyr:

Most likely it was some a$$hole who has their head shoved so far up their ass that they misinterpreted a kind or funny remark you made as being directed at them. If they would just pull their head back out of their ass, they could read the forum a lot more clearly, and perhaps even realize that the world is not about them.*

I think that some people on here take the whole karma thing too seriously, esspecialy when negitive karma is given. Overall, I think we would all be better off with out it, as to not make certian folks jelous or mad, but I will admit, sometimes when I log on and I see that my karma has gone up, I feel like one of the cool kidz.

As for giving negitive karma, I think ive only given it once or twice, and those were for comments that seemed to take a hit at another poster. Its the INTERNET, boys and girls. Half of the folks on here are probobly just commputer A.I. anyway. So lets just CHILL, alright?

I only give positive karma and rarely give it at all but sometimes guys or gals will post something so fascinating to me personally or just so ultimately creative or appealing that I feel I must give out karma. RCMerchant, Raffine, allhallowsday and Menard have gotten the most positive karma from me. There's been a few others too...I believe Poogie, venomx and perhaps a few more.  But I don't overuse the button, at least I don't think I do.

I'm going to take a dissenting view.  I am not as active a member on this board as others, so I've never really noticed my karma rating other than a quick, "huh".

I love feedback as much as the next person.  After something I view as a substantial post, I'll check back several times that day to see if anybody has responded.  But I think the near arbitrary karma rating may be taken too importantly.  It's a goof, right?  Just a fun little statistic?

What I've always valued about this board is the environment where people are can freely discuss, and if necessary disagree on, their opinions about movies others may not give a second thought about.  In fact, I think it is very impressive that this board remains so cordial, because I don't know if you've noticed, but cult movies like this tend to attract very strict adherents.

It's the same reason I don't patronize popular critics.  I don't care about ratings, I care about the discussion.

Once again, I love the "karma boost" as much as the next person.  But I think we've been doing it very well by respecting each other within our posts.  The nigh-unto arbitrary number underneath our profile seems superfluous and maybe even distracting.  I think what was meant to be a fun diversion may be approaching a reward/punishment system.  We're all adults here, let's talk.

Some of us cannot afford to take karma too seriously.   :tongueout:

I will admit that I have looked at a poster's karma when I do not recognize the name, or when they are newer, and used it as some sort of measure of approval (presumably on the part of the more active established members).  They must be doing something right - right?

Aside from a niggling feeling that I had better do something about my post/karma ratio, my low karma keeps me humble - and lurking.  (Which of course IS counter-productive.  )

somebody, help out a noob please. Where are these "applaud" & "boo/hiss" icons you speak of? I'm not seeing them. Is there some setting I need to change, or am I just not looking in the right place?

Oh, and I vote for having some sort of comments with the karma, or at least an indication of what post it was for.. I just got my first one, which is what prompted this query, and I don't know why (but I do appreciate it, whoever you were!)

The applaud and boo/hiss will only appear under the names of other posters.  You cannot see them for yourself.

The Karma function mod still has not been updated for SMF, so it has not been installed.  Months ago, the creator said it would be updated in a few days.  I check every week or so and still no dice.

I know, but I don't see it on the other's posts either. You say it should be underneath their name? What does it look like? Sorry to be a pest but it just bugs me that I can't find it.. y'know, in case I ever want to give karma. Hey, it could happen.

My apologies.  I was not paying attention.  To prevent simple abuse by phantoms, I put a rule in place that someone requires a certain number of posts before they can leave karma.  It is not terribly high, being just 10.

Once you reach your tenth post, you can test out the karma system on me. Just come back to this post, and you'll find the 'applaud' above my avatar. Just click on that and you'll instantly see the number go up. Of course, you'll have to wait 6 hours before you can applaud me again, but feel free to do it as many times as you want.
