Title: ABBA
Post by: Scott on May 10, 2007, 04:26:16 PM
Just picked up our On Demand box from Comcast and I watched a special 1 hour documentary on the music group ABBA. They were such a great group with a kinda sad ending. There are no words for the ABBA phenomenon. In some countries they were bigger than the Beatles. The documentary said they didn't want to make any song like another. Each unique.

Waterloo (http://youtube.com/watch?v=cjt7eU88xUA)

Dancing Queen (http://youtube.com/watch?v=7GFpMb0sOaw)

I love ABBA.  Such awesome vocal harmonies and melodies.  Great range of songs too.

ABBA songs are one of my favorite guilty pleasures.

Not that I think they were musical geniuses, but the songs were fun.

I like them, though all I have is a greatest hits CD.

Yep, got ABBA on the mp3. I tend to be tired of the more popular songs (ie: Dancing queen).

Rather - I like "KNOWING ME KNOWING YOU", "ALL IS SAID AND DONE", "HEAD OVER HEELS", "SOS", "SUMMER NIGHT CITY"

Some of their melodies are a little haunting and sometimes sad. But i never tire of their music

Strange as it may seem, I was listening to a CD of theirs only this morning ~ my all time favourites of theirs are Lay All Your Love On Me and When All Is Said And Done, two of their later hits. :teddyr:

While I like their music and have done so for a long time, I cannot ever forget the rumour that did the rounds back in the 1970's in my home country of Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. The rumour (totally unfounded) spread the message that ABBA had funded two terrorist / freedom fighter organizations in that country and the result was a massive boycott of their music in that country.  :buggedout:

Scott, I would have never picked you for an ABBA fan.  Nothing wrong with that, just did not see that coming.

I would have never admitted to liking their music.  But, as I browsed back over some of those video's on YouTube, I came to realize something.  Their music has stood the test of time.  Most "pop" performers come and go and are forgotten - with very few notable exceptions.  Listening to ABBA's music yesterday without the "oh gag, it's POP" reflex going, I heard what is really there.  It's much deeper than "pop" (or what I consider pop in MY mind), and I have to admit, they deserve to have such a strong following THIRTY YEARS later.

Wow.  Thanks, Scott.

I like their music and still own a vinyl album of theirs called Arrival. I was stationed in Scotland in 1974 and they were a pretty big deal. They had just won the Eurovision music contest and I saw them doing Waterloo on The Top of the Pops.

I watched a documentary about them once which was introduced by by Bono. Seems he is also a big fan of the group and called Benny and Bjorn geniuses.

Yea, I liked the music when I was younger. Didn't know much about them back then, but remember the music, and today it's quite emotional. ABBA is mesmerizing.

As for music I like 80's New Wave, Heavy Metal, Drum and Bugle Corps, Movie Themes, Disco (but can't dance), and Morricone and Conan type music.

And to think, it all started because of Eurovision, which coincidentally, is on this week.

A must watch for the awful costumes and tacky songs...

Another one I liked a lot and perhaps even more was this great song by Yvonne Elliman. Beautiful song.

If I can't have you (http://youtube.com/watch?v=PDCvJ68ZRGc)

"Take a Chance on Me" is my favorite song by Abba. Otherwise I can take or leave them.

Very catchy songs that have actually aged a lot better than people thought that they would.

Never really cared for them although I recently saw Mama Mia on Broadway which has a ton of their songs.

Our middle school band did Fernando.  I was second or third trumpet at the time.
