Title: WHO HAVE YOU SEEN THAT NO ONE CAN EVER SEE AGAIN?
Post by: Allhallowsday on May 11, 2007, 10:38:06 PM
WHO’S GONE THAT WAS GREAT?  That you’ve also witnessed in the flesh . . . ?

What film or TV actor that has passed away, was great, and you also got to see in the flesh?  Here are my meager few passed luminaries:
Raul Julia!  (1992 in MAN OF LA MANCHA...seeing Raul Julia live on stage was the greatest theatre experience for me . . . and I don't particularly like that show.)
Jack Lemmon! (TRIBUTE, not sure what year, maybe 1976, he was mesmerizing.  He knew every eye in the house was on him and took advantage of it.  Hilarious and heartbreaking.)
Frank Gorshin (on the street)!

Who have you seen that no one can ever see again?

Alan Hale, Jr. ("The Skipper") spent a good bit of time in the little town where I grew up. I saw him at a local greasy spoon restaurant a couple of times.

Matthew Mcgrory (BIG FISH. HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES) was at a horror convention a freind of mine was hosting a couple of years ago. I was going to go up to him to talk to him but I stopped short when  I was how terrible he looked. I really didn't want to bother him. About a month or so later he was dead.  :bluesad:

I was one of the lucky hundreds to see Guitar Wolf during their last US tour. They came to the legendary CBGB's in NYC. Not only was I lucky enough to see a show in the legendary, now-defunct venue, but I was able to see Billy "Bass Wolf" in action about 3 weeks prior to his fatal heart attack and actually bought him a beer from the bar... only to learn about 2 seconds later that they were drinking on the house. If you don't know who Billy was, he's the guy I have the dedication to (along with Mitch Headburg) on our website. Cinematically you can see the man in both Wild Zero and The Sore Losers. He was the "cool, quiet, bad ass" foil to the group's energetic, screaming front man Seigi.

You reminded me that I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan about a month before he died in that helicopter crash in 1990.  Vaughan opened for Joe Cocker at the Garden State Arts Center (interestingly, half the audience walked out when Vaughan was done . . . I was perplexed since JOE COCKER was comin' on!!!)

I also saw DeForrest Kelley at the one and only Star Trek convention I've been to. I was visiting my brother and he took me. It was cool to listen to Kelley's lecture; he just told stories from his very long career. He wasn't bragging or name-dropping, but he told stories about his friendships with other actors, and since his career had been so long, there were some really big-name actors in his past (in addition to the Star Trek cast). He came across as a very likeable man, with an easy wit and abundant charm. While I'm nowhere near the Trekker my brother is, I'm glad I was able to go to this convention and see Kelley (among others).

I know this isn't movie related (or maybe it is since they were in Rock 'n Roll High School  :teddyr:) but the Ramones.  I saw one of their last shows in Providence, RI back in 1996.  Half my friends went to the Ramones show and the other half went to see Weezer in Boston.  The Weezer group had seen the Ramones a bunch of times and thought that they weren't going to be "retired" for long (like Ozzie).

Needless to say, the Ramones were just awesome.  (It was my second and final time seeing them  :bluesad:).  The guys who went to see Weezer said that the show and crowd sucked.  To this day, my friend Mike wishes he had gone to see Joey, Johnny, CJ and Marky one last time.

The thing I liked the most about the two Ramones shows I went to was the demographics of the crowd.  You had teenagers, 20-30 somthings punks and non-punks alike, and even some old 40 year old bikers/punkers rocking along with the music.  It was neat to see a band from the 70's rocking out people from across two generations.  The Ramones will be sorely missed.

R.I.P.- Joey, Dee Dee and Johnny!

Lucky you!  THE RAMONES; what an awesome and important band!

Well, if we're doing music stars as well as film stars:
Frank Zappa (6 times)
Zero Mostel (Worked with him on roadshow version of "Fiddler")
Harry Chapin
John Bohnham (Led Zeppelin drummer/Front row)
John Entwhistle
George Gobel
Henny Youngman
. . . actually, given my age (51), and the advanced ages of some of the people I worked with back in the day (Carol Channing, Joan Rivers, etc.), it's amazing my list isn't longer --
Muddy Waters
Bob Marley (Auschaffenberg, Germany, 1976)
Jerry Garcia
Papa John Creech
Hunter S. Thompson (Numerous times & once in my cab)
Roy Buchannan (also in my cab)
Allen Ginsberg (Helped take out his garbage once)
Kevin Coyne
. . . I'm certain there are others, but I can't think of them right now --

Oh, hell!
I should've read the other letters better:
That's right, I saw The Ramones back in '79/'80(?) in Richmond, VA.  I know Dee-Dee was still with the band then, as he did all the talking to the crowd from the stage.  I'm fairly sure Johnny was in that lineup as well.
Here's another:
Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown
