Title: Futurama
Post by: Torgo on May 14, 2007, 10:51:03 PM
Is anyone else looking forward to the forthcoming direct to DVD episodes/movies?

Do you all think that they'll be up to the same standard as the original series was?

I was (and still am) a huge fan of Futurama but I've got some reservations about them trying to come back to it almost 4 years since it was canceled.

I've read that they're working on 4 direct to DVD movies that will also be shown on Comedy Central as well  (don't know about Cartoon Network but I'm sure they'll eventually make it there.)

I personally feel that the series really started cooking from season 3 and season 4 and then Fox pulled the plug like the idiots that they are.

I can't wait.  I watch the reruns on Adult Swim just about every night before bed, and even if I've seen the show a hundred times it still makes me giggle.

Looking forward to these also, always preferred it to The Simpons, hopefully they will keep them to the same standard as the show was/is.

I thought Family Guy's return (after a similarly lengthy break) was a bit rough, but they seemed to get their act back together this past season.  That said, I also have reservations about Futurama making a return, however nothing so grave as to stop me from seeing it.  I was a huge fan of the series and I agree with Torgo, it really hit its stride just prior to getting canceled by Fox.

My wife hates this show, but I just love it. At night I sometimes turn it on after she has fallen asleep. She'll wake up briefly, notice that I'm still awake, take a look at the screen to see what I'm watching and then make a sound of total disgust before flopping her head back down on her pillow.

I'm looking forward to the direct to DVD stuff, though I'm sure she'll give me the evil eye when I pick it out at the store.

Futurama was a show that I started watching late in it's life.  I ended up catching all of the old episodes on Adult Swim, and I must say it's a work of genius.  Not only is it damn funny but Groening was also able to infuse quite a bit of emotion into the show.  The episodes about Fry's dog and his brother are both surprisingly sad considering the show.

I can't wait for the new episodes.  Hopefully they'll be on par with the original series.

My wife hates this show

I'm with your wife on this one Shadow.
From the moment I laid eyes on this stinker of a show, I hated it.
And I've tried to sit down and get into it but just couldn't.

As soon as I see it come on, I snatch up the remote and change the channel.

OMG, the one with Fry's dog was the saddest thing ever. All those years that poor little dog waited in vain. :bluesad:

Ash, the only animated show my wife hates more is South Park. I've had the same reaction to some shows. Everyone goes on and on about how they're the greatest thing to come along since sliced bread, but I just cannot get into them. Like the X-Files. I tried and tried and tried but that show never caught on with me.

Like the X-Files. I tried and tried and tried but that show never caught on with me.

Ditto on the X-Files too.
I could never get into it for some reason.
Muldar and Scully are such icy cold characters...it was and still is hard for me to even try to identify with them.
Maybe that's why I don't care for the show.

A TV show can have great stories, but if I don't like the main characters...faghettaboudit!

I do like South Park though.

I've heard that criticism before from other people saying that they couldn't connect with any of the characters on Futurama.

I've also heard other criticisms in that the only character that anyone could really connect with was Bender, who happened to be a robot and not a human (or alien) character.

I will admit that the 2 only characters I would consider to be shallow was Amy and Hermes, probably Hermes a bit more than Amy though.

Amy had some moments to shine as a character like when we got to meet her parents on Mars and the part in which Kiff becomes "pregnant".

I always thought that especially as season 3 and 4 progressed, that characters like Fry and Leela got a surprising amount of depth with some really well thought out storylines that really fleshed their characters out a lot.

But Fox pulled the plug as the show really wasn't what they were wanting from the beginning (or what they expecting) which was just The Simpsons in space.

People forget that Futurama was actually still pulling in better ratings than South Park when it was cancelled by Fox.

"OOOhhhhhhhh! Let's make fun of star trek fans! Let's make as series about making fun of star trek fans!"

Yeah, as a star trek fan I got tired of being mocked and ridiculed a long time ago. Soa whole series about it wasn't really my thing.

An odd response since the Star Trek actors appeared on the series and spoke about how much they liked Futurama.

I'm a little surprised you are such a fan of Space 1999 then.

True that, I think pretty much the entire surviving cast at that point was on it and I've never seen an interview where they complained about the show.

Star Trek is about tolerance among divergent peoples, Sven. Might be a lesson or two there for you.
