Title: What Do You Drive?
Post by: Ash on May 16, 2007, 05:00:23 AM
This question has been asked here before.
And I think I was the one who originally asked it.
But that was years ago.

Time for an update!

What kind of car do you drive?

I drive a silver 1991 Geo Prizm hatchback that looks exactly like this...

(http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/8127/1y1sk5464mz0035441tq5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

That isn't my car but it's a dead ringer for it.
Rust & all...

I've never been one of those guys who needed a "hot" car to impress the ladies.
I don't gauge my self worth by what kind of car I drive like a lot of guys do.
Matter of fact, some of the sh***iest beaters I've ever driven in my late teens and early 20's were my favorite cars.
I think I've owned about 10 different cars since I was 16.

How about you?
What do you drive?
(pics please!)

  Hi Ash.

I drive a 1980 Toyota pickup, known locally as a "bakkie" and it still goes well. Unfortunately, I may have to get rid of it soon   :bluesad:  as it is 27 years old after all, spares are hard to come by and I will be going to film school (yes, at my age) next year, so I do need a new car or at least a good 2nd hand one.

I have pics of it but I unfortunately don't know how to post pics in my messages as yet.

I don't drive anymore.I quit driving in 1985. I live about a quarter mile from my job...I walk every where I go. Now the wify drives a 1989  Dodge Van...and for some reason, she painted flowers all over the sides....(sigh...she's a hippy type)....

I believe it's absolutely vital that we know what other members drive, so I'm contributing this info to this post.

I drive a Saturn SL 2002 White four door. No extras except a CD player. It's the workhorse in the household running all the errons. Bought in brand new in 2002 with nothing down and 0% interest at $250 month. Just made my final payment on it two months ago.

My wife drives a Honda Civic 2001 Midnight Blue with all power and a sun roof. She picked it due to it's reliability record.

My daughter drives a Chevy Cavalier Coup 2002 "Kill Bill" Yellow is the color with all power and sun roof.  We bought this one used two years ago.

2002 Ford Ranger pickup.  Bought it a month after Sept. 11, when the auto companies were offering 0% loans -- figured it wasn't going to go much lower, and my old truck was an '87 Isuzu pickup with 178,000 miles on it.

Mine looks like this:

(http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/1851/1948davisik6.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Except that my car has four wheels. And it's maroon. And it's made by Toyota. Okay, I drive a 1998 Toyota RAV4. It's my own personal Hot Wheels car, and I plan to drive it until it won't go any further (hopefully another 20 or so years like Trevor's) or at least until gasoline is no longer available. And then maybe I'll mount it on a pedestal (or at least cinder blocks) in the front yard.

We recently purchased a Honda Odyssey minivan.  With our third child on the way, it was necessary.  You cannot fit three carseats (we use Britax) in the back of an Accord.  That would be our other main vehicle, a 2004 Honda Accord.  I drive it to work, I come home, Katie drives it to work (and, yes, she does come home).

Our third vehicle is my 1995 Ford F150, which is my general work truck when I need to move large items or tow something.  I drive it to work once a week so that it is not just sitting and rusting.

Mine: 1986 Ford Ranger, over 300,000 miles on it now.
Wife's: 1994 Saturn 4 door, over 200,000 miles on it now.
Family: 2002 Dodge Durango, over 100,000 miles on it now.  (Andrew, we also use Britax car seats, by the way)

I've owned one new car in my life - 1983 Nissan Sentra.  The payments were $114 per month.  When I got it, it did not even have a radio, carpeting, etc.  It was truly a bare-bones car.  I think it had 150,000 miles or so on it when I sold it.

A car to me is a vehicle, a means to get from point A to point B.  It need say nothing about who I am or what I'm like.  I treat my boats a little differently, though.

Just yesterday, I had to go make a parking lot 'repair' to my wife's car.  The shift linkage broke at the shifter.  I few strips of trusty old duct tape and I got it home.  I'll probably be making a run to the junkyard tomorrow.

I actually bought my first ever new car, last year -- a 2006 Toyota Prius, green.

Averaging 52 mpg on this tank (goes about 500 miles on one tank, typically).   :teddyr:

The little woman drives a 1987 Toyota MR2, nice little car, gets great gas mileage, runs real good. I think that Poogie is about as tall (6' or so) as will fit comfortably in this car, I'm 6'4" and to be comfortable in it I must pop the moon roof open.

I drive a 2006 Jeep Liberty, use it for work and for vacations, also has a nice back seat for the beagles. This is only the 2nd. new car we've ever had.

I have never bought a brand new car. I probably never will. They depreciate in value so fast, it just doesn't make for a good investment. I've always gone with used cars and gotten pretty good deals.

Me: 2003 Chevy Impala that looks almost exactly like this one:

The wife drives a 2005 Chevy Malibu Max just like this one:

'92 Ford Taurus LX station wagon, with a 3.8 liter V6, fuel injection & overdrive.
I like it, but a couple of months ago somebody parked in my space, & I had to park it in a ditch. It rained that night, & the next day I had to call a tow truck to get it out. Ever since, the steering's felt kinda funny, it idles pretty rough when I first start it, & it doesn't quite have as much pep as it used to.

I took it to my mechanic, & after taking a look at it, he essentially said that he wouldn't fix it, insisting that the work (1,100 estimated) would cost more than the car is worth. So I looked around for another machine &, considering my current financial situation, found that my best option would probably be some type of 2.0 four cylender econobox, maybe a couple of years newer.

Of course, I like my big Taurus, & it seems to do okay as long as I keep a sharp eye on the fluids & don't push it too hard. so I think I'll just stick with this one 'til it craps out or another five grand falls into my lap.

In the meantime, I've been trying to restore my '75 Honda CB400f Supersport.
I haven't been able to ride it for a couple of years now, as it needs a lot of work, but the engine's held up pretty well.
I just got a new battery for it, & I'm hoping with my next paycheck to get a new set of ignition coils & plugs.
From there, it needs a new chain & sprockets, and a front tire.
Eventually, I hope to rebuild the front fork, & replace the contact points with a Dyna magneto.

"You're a mess, Malrb! You need new boots, now you need a new bike!"

I had a '94 Mercury Sable wagon; basically similar. I loved that wagon (despite it having been a Ford product). Unfortunately, the engine went (it remembered that it was a Ford product), and I couldn't afford to drop another engine in it.

The Taurus and Sable wagons are roomy, comfortable cars.

Still wish I had my Sable wagon. It was probably the only vehicle I can recall where, once when it was in the shop, I had used a rental car, and was so looking to get back to my car because the rental car was so uncomfortable compared to it.

I never cared for the later, shortened models; the ones with the teardrop looking back windows.

I bought a Dodge Neon back in 2002 much like Raj did when auto companies were doing anything to sell their cars.  After everything was said and done, the car ended up only being apx 12,000 with taxes and fees.  I got married about six months later and that has been my wife's car ever since.

When she took over the Neon, I reverted to driving an 89 Ford Escort that I had since the late 90s.  I bought it with only 18k miles on it and it was a great car.  Last August the transmission completely quit while at a stop sign so I went out and picked up a 2001 Daweoo Lanos.

This one looks quite a bit like mine although mine is not a hatchback:

The Neon will be payed off in July, and I have been contemplating getting another vehicle.  The Daewoo was just something cheap to get me from point A to point B.  I may see about looking into buying a used Prius like Zap mentioned since I've loved those since they were first released.  The extra gas mileage certainly would help as well.

Interestingly enough, I had inhereted a '93 Sable sedan from my grandfather in December of 2001, but I totalled it a couple of months later. Fortunately, my Mom had talked me into getting some good insurance, which I used to buy the Taurus.

Me: 2003 Nissan Frontier XE pickup (4cyl 5 speed). Gets decent mileage and I've got room for those Home Depot purchases.

My wife: 1998 Toyota Corolla w/110,000 miles. Good commuter, but I'm 6'3" and it kills my knees to drive the thing.

We're looking at buying a weekend and trip car this year, probably a Nissan Altima.

I had a 1996 Nissan XE pickup, but gave it to my son when he was in college. He had a crappy old Geo Storm that was falling apart, so I gave him my truck (which had about 110,000 miles on it) and traded his old car on my new truck (got $500 for it).  He gonna drive it until he's 25 and the insurance rates go down before buying something new.

My daughter had our 1992 Taurus until she inherited some money from her grandma.  She sold the old one to a friend and bought a 1997 Taurus in 2004 that had only 45,000 miles on it . It's a pretty nice car with leather seats, sunroof, and a cd changer in the trunk.

I've been driving for the last 3 years a beige 2004 Ford Focus Sport Wagon SE.

Got it because I'm constantly loading around music equipment and stuff.

First brand new car that I ever bought.  It's run like a dream since I've had it.

2000 Subaru Outback . . .
Boring car, but glad it runs well --
Our prior, which we were forced to sell to a Mexican neighbor, had a beautiful mural of the Standing Stones of Callanish on its hood --
Plus, a Homecoming Queen crown and champagne bubbles that my wife's High School associates/students had painted on the rear window --

With all these cars we should do a road movie with all of us meeting in New York to L.A. with CB's for 3,000 miles and seeing who will get there first. With nightly stops at regional drive-ins along the way so everyone would have a chance to be first by the time we all hit Hollywood. Coast to coast......................

At the end there would be a big B-Fest in Hollywood for all the badmovies.org members and lurkers.

I am a little disappointed, but will agree.  Katie would probably get upset with me for welding spikes onto the front of the Accord anyway (it gets the best gas mileage).

It would be a great B-Fest Cannonball Run style. We would all cross the country from New York to Los Angeles stopping at designated Drive-Ins each night for concession stand food and B-movie conversation during double features. We would have it during the Summers and it would end with a B-Fest in some hotel in Hollywood, California. We could even have points for those who stop at Captain Kirks hometown and other B-movie locations. With CB's in hand all the way we would talk movies and use or create B-movie dialogue during the trip. It would be filmed so we could sell the DVD and pay for the B-Fest location each year and bring recognition to badmovies.org.

It would have to be something that could be accomplished in 7-10 days so we could all get back home and work.

We could have it so that members who didn't want or couldn't go all the way to New York to start could meet the tour at half way points like St. Louis or anywhere along the way. There could be car pools also for those who didn't want to run their vehicles into the ground. With the cell phone we could help those who break down when they are out of CB reach. Looks like we've go us a convoy................

Ever since moving to a major metropolitan area I've discovered that owning and maintaining a car here is far outside my budget constraints, to the closest I get to driving is sitting in the front section of the R, N or D lines.

The last car I drove was by far my favorite of the 4 or 5 I'd owned till that point. It was a 1990 Chevy Caprice Classic. It was a tank of a car, it rode so smooth that going 80 down the highway was like floating along at 40. I wound up getting pulled over several times because I was paying more attention to my comfort than I was to the speed-o-meter. It was spacious, in perfect condition, had an arctic blasting AC unit and a friend installed a brand new cd player into it for me after I bought it. I only paid $500 for the car from a friend of my father. One of the hardest things to do in moving to Brooklyn was giving up that car. Sure, it wasn't good on gas, but this was before it cost a day's pay to fill your tank, so it wasn't all that bad. Besides, my friends all loved riding in it so much that thet were always happy to put up gas money for the privilege.

Dear Ash and RC --
Yes, that is in fact the very set of standing stones, though we were working from a photograph that I took, so a quite different angle -- much more emphasis on the central stone.
Callanish is a lovely place -- I recommend that everyone goes there --
"forced to sell" . . . ah, well . . . I'm currently out of work, so everything not tied down gets sold off, except the cats & certain memorabilia that I still intend to leave to my niece or nephew.

Well, I have the ultimate in transportation.  They're economical, doesn't need any fuel, and I don't even need a license.  They're called the left foot and the right foot .  And I also have access with a special card, and with one swipe, I have access with any bus and, especially, trains (specifically, the D, B, and W trains).  Seriously, That is my job working in transit.  So Tomb, if by chance you're waiting for a D train ( I assume in Brooklyn), look in the middle of the train for a fat black guy with a goatee wearing two pairs of glasses (one are safety glasses) and wearing a METS cap sticking his head out of a window.  But do so before the 27th of May, I'll be on the A and C trains after that.

Though I don't participate currently (rural community), I'm a big fan of public transportation.  When I lived in Denver, I took the express bus to work; since my job involved a lot of paperwork (grading), I got a lot done on the ride.  It sure was nice to not have to fight traffic, and a bus pass was cheaper than gas, too (even back in the mid 1990's).

Here's to ya'll.

Now that I'm back again, let's see if I kill this thread.

Until a few months ago I was driving a blue 1987 Escort station wagon, until the head gasket blew or the head crack, best we can tell. Coolant in the fuel anyway, and too expensive to fix for what it cost me. A beater, but I need it when my Camero gave me trouble a while back.

My best friend loaned me his 1986 F-150 XLT while hunting up a new car. Rugged truck big V-8 motor, not my kind of vehicle at all, don't usually need a big truck to haul stuff, but I got used to all the power. Lousy on gas, but it was fun for a little while.

I now drive a white 1994 Jeep Cherokee Sport with the 4.0 liter straight six motor. The body is a little rough, a few dings and scratches, missing a piece of trim on the side (haven't found one yet but we're looking), needs a better radio. I've always wanted a Cherokee, finally got one. There's still so many on the road I took it as a good sign. Hopefully as long as I take care of the motor I can get a lot of miles out of it. Fun to drive, has a bit of style (a car is a tool to me, but if it's a nice looking tool I won't complain), room for carying stuff (which I have started to need as I get out more). Probably he only SUV I'll ever own. And since I've had it, I have gotten a bit more attention from the women folk, who sem to like it. Shallow, but hey, life is short, and I'm due a bit of fun.

Being a contractor, I drive a diesel drinking monster Dodge Ram 3500 Quad Cab 4X4 I also have a RAM 1500 4X4 short bed for just driving.

It looks like this ... just not as clean with my LOGO info on the doors and a wench on the front.

My wife drive a super smug hybrid that gets 50 mpg to make up for the fact of mine getting about 5. LOL

  Dumb Question

Is a "Master Cylinder Rebuild Kit" for the engine, or is it for the brakes?

And, does anyone know how to use a drill tap?

Is it okay to clean the rust off a generator rotor, or do I need to get a new one?
Or should I replace the stater & the regulater/rectifier first?

Should I start with the electrical system first, or should I start with the carbs or the top end or something?

:hatred: No, no, no, I've already ruled out a "new" bike!

For the brakes

Yes

Depends on who much there is.

Or should I replace the stater & the regulater/rectifier first?

Don't know is it broke?

Always start with the mechanical parts first. If you can't make it mechanically sound you're wasting your time with electrical, as it is easy to replace.

Why?
