This is a tough one........Hmmm. Just had a pretty good one at Outback Steakhouse last week. Best? I don't really know for sure. If you have plenty of ketchup/Mustard/or Mayo it always turns out good.

If your talking fast fast food. Naturally the flame broiled ones at Burger King are good, and now they have the angus burger, but so are the ones at McDonalds with those little diced onions. Putting bacon/cheese on any burger improves things. Not sure why, but I always liked Carl Jr.s star burger out West. Jack In The Box has insane burgers with chilli and all sorts of stuff. Or was that french fries? Pure fast quality goes to the In N Out  (http://www.in-n-out.com/default.asp) franchise in California. They only do hamburgers and freshly cut fries. In N Out  (http://www.in-n-out.com/default.asp) now that's the best overall hamburger place for the simple burger.

I can make some good ones at home, but not as much as I use to.

Sushi has become my number one favorite take out.

There is a trend developing here that has taken off is gourmet burgers that are huge, and packed full of not only semi-healthy goodness, but big bits of quality meat.  They're pretty awesome, and one of the 'big guns' in this area is a place called 'Grill'd' (http://www.grilld.com.au/cpa/).  A personal favourite of mine is the "Simon Says": Grilled Chicken Breast, Avocado, Crispy Trim Bacon, Salad, Relish and Herbed Mayo.  Yum.  For some reason I've always been a fan of the chicken burgers, but as you'd expect they have a great selection of beef burgers as well.

Sure fast food is quick and easy, but gosh darn these burgers are awesome.  Though for almost AU$10 a burger they'd better be eh?

Damn, now I'm hungry...

There's a strange, dodgy restaurant in downtown Boulder City, Nevada, that can't quite decide if it is a greasy diner or a fashionable, California eatery.  Its identity crisis makes for some great combinations.  Imagine one pound of smoky, fat-ass grilled beef with avocado, 1000 island, ketchup, onions, tomato, and lettuce between huge slices of sourdough bread for $4.  Oh, and it comes with a gazillion fries made from actual potatoes and cola in a glass bottle.  I wish I could remember the name of the diner.  It's about 20 minutes outside Las Vegas.  On the right-hand side if you are following signs to Hoover Dam.  Oh well.  :teddyr:

Years ago when German immigrants came over to the U.S. they were cooking something called the steak burger without bread. It was a ground beef steak. Our hamburger of today.

There's a place located in downtown Roanoke, VA called Texas Tavern that sell these little burgers that are the most delicious that I've ever eaten.  They also have a type of burger called The Cheesy Western that is 2 of their beef patties, fried eggs, relish, onions and cheese.  YUM YUM!

There's a great place in Charlottesville, VA called The White Spot right near UVA that sells The Gus Burger.  It's kind of The Cheesy Western taken to the next level and I swear I can feel my arteries hardening up when I eat one, even though they're delicious as all get out.   They add more eggs and lettuce, tomato and ketchup which you can't get at Texas Tavern.

Any of the ones I didn't have to pay for.

Actually there is this little spot in the road deli/gas station/grocery/video rental/small engine repair place near me. (Can you tell I live in the boondocks) that makes the best burgers ... It's 100% Angus beef because the owner has a cattle farm too. They are THICK and JUICY and CHEAP and extremely good ... no beyond good THEY'RE GGGGrrrrraaeeettttt!!!! (Said Tony the Tiger-ish)

Now that sounds good....the best burgers are the ones that come off a real grill, and aren't processed patties.  I don't eat a lot of beef, but when I want a burger, it has to be a real one, no fast food please.

FIRST, for those uninitiated, let me reveal the secret of a truly GREAT HAMBURGER : once ground, minimize handling of the meat.  Pounding ground meat does not make it more tender.  Also, a great burger can be made in a skillet and need not be fire-grilled (though lovely) but the second secret of a great burger is that it be flipped only once!

Agree with Snivelly, fast food burgers and true Hamburgers are different animals.  Though their burger is kind of fast-foody, it's the best of the bunch and to-order: WINDMILL here in NJ.

There is a place about 20 minutes west, probably called "DINER" on Route 33 west of Neptune (can't remember for sure, being a good boy) that is truly a hole-in-the-wall that makes an outstanding, to-die-for, hand-formed hamburger of choice ground beef and just-right acoutrement -- ask for cheese!   :teddyr:   Applause to those cited.

I weep for all of you who do not live in Utah, because that is the only place one can find the family-owned Crown Burger outlets, truly the greatest hamburgers on earth.

I introduced a visiting friend to the overwhelming goodness that is Crown Burger, and now she curses me because she frequently wants one and can't get one where she lives.

OKI, for fast food burgers, the Texas chain called Whataburger ROCKS!!!!!!!!  It is head and shoulders above every other franchise.

For "Home grilled" style burgers, there is a little gas station in Lone Oak, TX that will cook up a double cheeseburger while you wait.  It comes with a plateful of fries and is THE BOMB!

Title: Re: Best Hamburger You've Ever Had

I'll second Indianasmith's vote for Whataburger as the best fast food burger, although I really like Hardee's also, though we don't have them down here in South Texas.

For gourmet burger chains, I'd go with a Fuddrucker's 1/2 pound buffalo burger; those are quite tasty.

But the best burger I've found anywhere is from a local place in Corpus Christi called Backstreet Burger: It's 1/3-pound of beef flame-broiled, loaded to capacity with fresh veggies. It's juicy, hot and wonderful, and the owners are really nice people, too.

I think I'm noticing a trend here, though: the best burgers don't come from chains, but rather from independent restaurants that cater to local people rather than to regions or states or nations.

I used to love Fuddrucker's, but the last few times I have been to one they were not so good.  Maybe the ones in the Midwest are held to a higher standard?

Either that or we just have less to choose from. Fuddrucker's is still fairly new here, so they are still trying to please customers. Otherwise, there's Wallbanger's, which has gone a bit downhill in the last few years.

I really liked the taco salad.  Once i found a little fruit fly in it. I guess that will happen every once in a while. The last time I had one, THE LAST TIME, there was a large dead fly at the bottom of my salad!!  I will NEVER eat there again.  Gross...

I haven't been to a Fuddruckers since I visted Edmonton in the 80s. The chain's not in this part of Canada. At the time, I was pretty impressed - meat freshly ground, buns baked daily, patties of various sizes cooked to order, an impressive topping bar and self-serve pop. Is it still like that?

I'd say, of the restaurant burgers available here, I'd have to go with Kelsey's cracked peppercorn burger. Big, juicy patty crusted in cracked peppercorns, with lettuce, tomato, pickle, red onion, cheese and fried onion rings, served with a basket of various bottled condiments for easy customization.

Hard to pick a fast-food burger. Each has its unique charm.

Probably the most spectacular burger I ever bought was at a place called Reuben and Wong's (combination Chinese and deli, as the name implies). It was the Brontosaurus Burger. I can't remember if it was a half, three quarter or full pound of beef in the patty, but it was like a meatloaf on a loaf of bread. And it was covered with cheese, bacon, onions, tomatoes and pickles, whole fried mushrooms and a bunch of other stuff. That was a meal and a half.

AHHH! yes! Except down here in London, ONT it was called the Kong burger. i am quite miffed that they closed up shop and i can no longer get it anymore. In the R&W at Whiteoaks mall I was quite well known there as the guy who could eat one of those, plus all the fries and gravy, plus desert.. and help his wife finish her meal. I have yet to find a restaraunt that can offer me a burger as good as that one!

For a fast food burger, I would have to say the Hardee's 'Monster Thickburger'.  Hardees was a local restaurant chain that was started near where I live but ended up being bought out by Carls Jr. a while back.  Originally it was just the Monster Burger which was much much smaller than what Hardees now has.

Here is a synopsis from Wikipedia:

The Monster Thickburger is a type of double-bacon cheeseburger with mayonnaise. The burger contains 1,410 Calories (5,900 kJ), 107 grams of fat, and 2740 mg of sodium.

Ingredients include a sesame-seed bun, mayonnaise, bacon, cheese, butter-flavored shortening and two patties of ground beef made from Angus cattle for a total of 2/3 lb (300 g uncooked) of meat.

The marketing of this burger may represent a neo-comfort food movement against alarms raised by nutritionists about an obesity epidemic. In an interview on CNBC, Hardee's CEO Andrew Puzder said the sandwich was "not a burger for tree huggers." The burger was also parodied on an episode of the Late Show with David Letterman when the "CEO of Hardee's" came out to talk about the then-new Monster Thickburger to David Letterman, only to die from a heart attack after just taking one bite. Nevertheless, sales for the 2,067-restaurant chain have risen steadily since the introduction of the Thickburger family in 2003, with same-store sales up 7.8% annually.

The Monster Thickburger is based on the Monster Burger, which had similar ingredients but was the size of a double quarter pounder instead of two-thirds of a pound.

I'm telling you that this burger is one of the most delicious things on earth.  I'm a mayonnaise fan to an extent and this thing is covered with it.  It's not just regular mayonnaise but a spicy recipe that only Hardees seems to have.  That along with all of the meat, cheese and bacon makes for a great heart-attack inducing meal.  Throw in some curly fries and you are set for the day.

You're in London? I used to live in the Waterloo area. Went to the R&W by the university. I still haven't seen another burger like that one. Mind you, I was also a big fan of the Mongolian Grill that set up in the same location a little later. I now live in a place at least 40 minutes of highway driving from the nearest Tim Hortons, so chain restaurants are kind of a treat. The Americans on here probably can't appreciate how remote that is. I used to pass three Timmies on my way to work in the morning.

You know it is kind of funny that most Canadians will use a Timmy's as a key landmark in most directions.

There just happens to be one at every major intersection, so it works  :teddyr:

I couldn't begin to pick a favourite fast food burger. This is one area where the major chains have actually shown some diversity. McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, etc. They all have a distinct style of burger, so it's hard to compare.

I had been trying to decide between the Big Mac and the Whopper with cheese, although sometimes those little McDonalds cheeseburgers (so basic, they're almost the antithesis of what I'd consider a good burger) can really hit the spot.

But then, out of the blue, I think of the A&W burgers, that have a sort of salty, greasy, caramelized-meat flavour. Mmmmmm. When you get right down to it, the meat is what really makes a hamburger.

The only Sonic I ever went to was in Kayenta, Arizona in Navajo territory just after visiting Monument Valley around sundown. We got a bite to eat at Sonic. It was a brief outdoor dining moment. The Sonic and Hotels are entirely staffed by young Navajo. The town is basically a flat dusty area where you can find gas, food, and lodging, but the surrounding areas in each direction are incredible.

Then we headed towards Page, Arizona. It was really weird. Following the sun over the horizon. The sun light should have been gone, but we followed dusk for about 90 miles till we arrived in Page, Arizona and finally dark. Waking up the next morning in another neat place.

Photo of downtown Keyenta. The Sonic isn't in the picture, but head around the corner South on Rt. 160.

Sonic has an absolutely delicious spicy breakfast burrito that I've gotten hooked on a bit.

There's a Sonic a couple of streets over from my house (along with a Dairy Queen & Hardees.)

If you like some hot stuff with a bit of kick to it, try their breakfast burrito's some time. I doubt you'll be disappointed.  They have a great coney island style hotdog as well that I like a lot.

Best burger I've had is probably one I had at Bennigan's.
THE BIG IRISH 1 LB. BURGER
Two juicy, 8 oz. patties perfectly grilled and served with two slices of melted American cheese and an extra bun.

Unhealthy as hell, but tasty. Heck, you NEED the steak knife they include to chop it in half cause of it's huge size to really eat that sucker. I wish though they still did their never ending fries though.

The best burger I had was one I made myself with ingredients from the supermarket.  A flat-ish freshly baked hamburger bun from the bakery (I hate the high domed ones), slathered thickly with a fancy dip made from chilli crab and pesto mayo.  A patty of burger meat, 4 slices of bacon that had been cooked in the fat from the hamburger patty and done until just starting to crisp.  A filet of beer battered fish.  Two slices of cheese - one tasty, the other swiss. Once large leaf of fancy lettuce.  Two slices of tomato.  All topped with bbq sauce.

My son is 6 foot 1 and built like a Mack truck.  After one burger he was conceding defeat.  But the groans of culinary ecstasy emanating from his very full mouth during the feed made me glow with pride   :teddyr:

As far as fast food burgers go, I generally like Burger King, and Hardee's has great ones.  I miss the old Hardee's menu when they had those awesome Chicken Biscuits during breakfast hours.

I really can't think of any great burgers I've had other than homemade ones.  There's a local place called Kaelin's that's one of three joints that claim to be the birthplace of the cheeseburger (I think it's the only one still operating, though) and I'd like to try theirs sometime, although I'm sure it's nothing special.

There's this bar/restaurant I go to fairly consistently that has a good burger.

The restaruant I work at has fresh ground patties made up everyday (no frozen patties or anything like that), and they have a special one called the "Royal Burger", which is two patties, lettuce, tomatoes, and one or two onion rings (fresh made) thrown on top.

steak & shake is pretty great for a chain.

in chicago, there's a joint just off the cross-street of damen & chicago ave, called "odge's yellow submarine". great burgers, kitschy digs.
