Avery especially got the bugged-out extreme eyeball thing going on at an early age, something that was imitated endlessly by lesser beings to follow. McKimson was one of the mainstays of Termite Terrace. I never met him, but did get to chat with Chuck Jones at some length once upon a time -- You should check out my post here about "Bathtime at Clerkenwell", under "Craziest Internet Animation Ever?". That's how I got to appreciate classical music.

Post by: Raffine on June 19, 2007, 10:49:08 PM The Warner Bros. and MGM cartoons had great music and songs, but I'm a big fan of the scores of the old Fleischer b&w 'Popeye' cartoons. Great jazzy scores, complete with slap-tongue bari saxophone, and songs like "Brotherly Love", "I'll Do Anything That You Do", and "Sinbad the Sailor"!
This was always one of my favorites of the Popeye cartoons. A great song "Pappy" (including fairly sophisticated variations throughout the score) and those great Goons (complete with their own theme music!). Louis Armstrong: "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal You" . . . Slack-key Hawaiian guitar groups. Jug band jazz/Hillbilly jazz groups.
My friend who used to work for a media firm in Chicago once made me a 6hr. VHS of old Betty Boop from 1929/'31, pre-Hays, when she still had her "dog ears" -- Betty was originally conceived as a dog -- My my but the sexual innuendo doth fly: Erection jokes, impotence jokes, laciviousness jokes, you name it. Post by: Inyarear on July 12, 2007, 03:51:59 PM Yeah, musical cartoons have been with us for a long time, and I like them all. Here's a little edgy stuff from one of those Betty Boop cartoons. Note that this would have been running right around the height of segregation, although even the worst racists tended to consider black musicians "safe" as long as they were in a jazz band, which was more or less a socially acceptable outlet for black musical talent. I've also seen this cartoon incorporated into a longer feature in which, instead of running back home, Betty Boop makes her way out into the world and works her way up from washing dishes in a cheap restaurant to being the first lady President of the USA.

This was one of my favorites when I was a kid: [youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsQrKZcYtqg Now, of course, we've come up to the point where everyone and his dog can re-cut some animated footage and set it to just about any song there is, and there are probably millions of fan videos and AMVs out there. I can't say I'm sorry to see the stuff democratized; in fact, with the quality of MTV's stuff going into serious decline (along with the channel itself), a lot of those early AMVs were a marked improvement over anything the commercial music video makers had to offer. Still, when millions of people do the same thing, it's just not as much fun as it used to be... |
