I excused them in Begins because Batman actually did some crazy driving that would require such things, so there better be at least one such instance in Dark Knight that excuses their return for this pod thing. It looks to be all tire! At this point Batman might as well be riding around on a bat unicycle that consists of one big tire with an engine and tear gas launcher...
