Title: Kontroll (2004)
Post by: Snivelly on June 20, 2007, 04:32:52 PM
I saw this one on the cable guide and decided to record it, as lately I've developed a fondness for foreign films.  This one is a treat, it's about some of the people who work for the subway system in Budapest, Hungary.  It's in subtitles, which is best because had it been dubbed it would have lost a lot of the nuances.

The story is about one of the workers, Bulscu, who has had something of a nervous break and won't leave the subway tunnels.  He's the supervisor of a crew of misfits working there, and the funniest moments of the film are of them trying to enforce the ticket policies for the subway.  But the film isn't a comedy, it's actually a very well-done thriller, as a mysterious figure in a hood is pushing people off the platforms into the paths of oncoming trains.

The film has a great techno soundtrack, if you like electronica at all, and I was surprised to learn that this was the director's first movie.  The pacing is great, and it's a very moody film.  Here's a link to the IMDB page, it's one I might have to buy for my own collection.

I had a manager who actually paid me to see this so he would have somebody to talk to about it.  I had mentioned it to him before because I had missed out on the screenings at the Chicago International Film Festival (it sold out all shows, even the extra one they opened up).  It's great, surreal, and has a narcoleptic guy that looks like my favorite waiter at a nearby restaurant.

I'm so glad someone else has seen this....I'm trying to get my hands on the soundtrack, but so far I can't find anyone who has it for sale.  Great film.   :teddyr:

I checked this out from the library I work at.  I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.  It kind of lost focus near the end, but that may be because the abstract themes of the film were coming to fore and I was very tired.

I also thought the girl in the film, the daughter of the train conductor, was really quite lovely.

Well, maybe not so much in that picture.

I'd be interested in seeing what other films are coming out of Eastern Europe these days.  The director has gone on to make VACANCY, which I'm interested in; but then I'll see anything with Frank Whaley.
