I enjoy:

As you already mention, DK's and The Ramones
Bad Religion- "Suffer" and "No Control"
Screeching Weaslel(obviously)- "My Brain Hurts" and "Boogadaboogadaboogada"
The Queers- "Beat Off" and "Love Songs for the Retarded"
The Dickies- "Dawn of the Dickies" and "The Incredible Shrinking Dickies"
Circle Jerks- "Group Sex"
The Adolescents- Self-Titled(aka the Blue album)
NOFX-"White Trash, Two Heebs, and a Bean"(their latest album was a disappointment, though)
Guttermouth- "Shave the Planet"(been out for about a year now, and still play the heck out of it)
Sloppy Seconds- "Destroyed"

Loads of others, just can't think of 'em at the moment.

I hear you RCMerchant.  I've got an eclectic taste in music, but punk and ska have always been my favorite.

Bad Religion - 'How Could Hell Be Any Worse', 'Suffer', and 'Generator'.

The Descendents - 'Everything Sucks'

88 Fingers Louie - Most anything they did was great.  I prefer 'Back On The Streets' and '88 Fingers Up Your Ass' though.

Face To Face - 'Don't Turn Away' is still my favorite of theirs.  They seemed to lose their unique sound as time went on.

NOFX as Moron Boy mentioned.  'White Trash' was the first punk album I ever bought.  I also like 'S N M Airlines'.

Circle Jerks - 'Golden Shower Of Hits' and 'Oddities, Abnormalities, and Curiosities'.  If you have never heard 'Oddities..' then it's worth checking out.  If I'm not mistaken it's the last album they did.

Falling Sickness - Loved these guys back in high school.  Sadly they broke up a few years back.  Both of their albums, 'Right On Time' and 'Because The World Has Failed Us Both' are fantastic.

As for The Ramones, who doesn't like them?  They are by far one of the greatest rock bands of all time and their influence can be felt in most every "rock" song now, if such a thing exists anymore.  I just recently picked up that big Ramones boxset: "Strange Tales Of The Ramones".

http://amazon.com/o/ASIN/B0009CTUPA/ref=s9_asin_title_1-serq_g1/104-2409672-3437544?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=18QXD91SJ4KC9F114TQN&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=288448501&pf_rd_i=507846 (http://amazon.com/o/ASIN/B0009CTUPA/ref=s9_asin_title_1-serq_g1/104-2409672-3437544?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=18QXD91SJ4KC9F114TQN&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=288448501&pf_rd_i=507846)

It's done up in an E.C. Comics style and is heavy on the comic book motif.  The comic that is included is fantastic and is something that I'm sure RCMerchant would get a kick out of.  It also includes 3CDs and 1 DVD of Ramones songs, which equals up to about 103 songs and some videos thrown in as well.

Punk change my whole life really. I just love it. Besides the Classics that everyone likes DKs, Adolescents, Ramones Black Flag, here some other bands I really dig:

Discharge have their "Society's Victims" Box set and it just great. Especially the early Eps and albums. This is early Crossover you can say.

Broken Bones- The guitarist from Discharge left to form this. Still fast and hard and actually  id great fusing Punk/metal together at that time when so many failed. "Dem Bones and Decapitated" is what I'm listening to now.

D.I.- Other band from the OC. The album Horse Bites Dog Cries is great

Reagan Youth-From my hometown of Queens great 80s hardcore

DeathCycle-Other band from New York that plays hardcore and is a recent band

Modern Life Is War- A great Melodic Hardcore band and their Witness is a great album

Thats just some of the few. I go to shows almost weekly.UP DA PUNX

Punk bands are ok, but punk's distant cousin SKA is amazing.

You can't forget about...

THE STRANGLERS - I got a rare LP of IV with versions pf "Meninblack", "The Raven", and "Rok it to the Moon". Great stuff. Gotta respect the duos.

THE MEMBERS - Sort of the inbreding member of the family going by KYGOTC's logic. Yes, there was ska/punk before OpIvy. Their song "Don't Push" off of At the Chelsea Night Club is one of the greatest punk anthems ever. It always surprised me why it's not as popular as some other stuff.

Nobody mentioned CRASS? Oh come on! "Big Man, Big M.A.N." always seems to get stuck in my head.

INFA RIOT - "Kids of the 80s" is still one of my favorite songs.

CROMAGS - Love that 80s hardcore. Listening to "Show You No Mercy" still makes me want to beat the crap out of somebody.

I heard GUTTERMOUTH. One of my all time favorite punk bands. "So you think your kung-fu's pretty good, heh? I want to fight your brother. Him against me. LET'S KUNG-FU!!" The "1,2,3...Slam!" video on Cinema Beer Goggles was friggin' hilarious!

JUGHEAD'S REVENGE - A lesser known band on the Nitro Records palate. Jughead's was just a plain-out kick ass punk band with various metal influences. I still think "Just Joined" was the best punk album of 1997. The Bouncing Souls s/t was overrated! Unfortunately, they were sued by Archie Comics near the turn of the century. Apparently it was all that dweeb Dexter Holland's fault, too. Archie Comics wasn't suing because of the name, but rather a T-shirt Nitro was putting out with the character Jughead's image on it. JR told Dexter to pull the shirts, Dexter didn't, Archie sued. They went under the name Jugg's Revenge for awhile, but that didn't last. Most of the original members are in a new band now, KILL DETAIL.

RC mentioned MUCKY PUP. I have a comp with them on it from a label called Crustacean Records out of Wisconsin. Didn't really get into them too much, but a couple other bands on the label were really good. MAD TRUCKER GONE MAD and BIG BIG FURNACE.

Has anyone ever heard of a band called ANGST? They were on SST Records in the early-mid eighties. Their albums include a self-titled, Lite Life, Mystery Spot, and Mending Wall. I happened upon all of these albums (two on cassette, two on vinyl) as if I were destined to have them. They're a bit on the mellow side, but they are four of the very best albums I own. ANGST. If you ever see it at your local record store (you know the real ones) don't hesitate to grab it.

RADIO BIRDMAN - Kick ass surf punk from Australia named after a misquoted line in The Stooges' "1970." Saw them last year in Boston. Yeah, they're like 60, but yeah they still kick ass. One of the best shows I have ever been to.

And talking about great shows, I also saw the MELVINS a few months back. They merged with this other band BIG BUSINESS, and those two guys is BB played their set, and the MELVINS set straight through with one, maybe two, breaks. That guy was playing drums for almost two hours straight. Phenomenal. Recently picked up the MELVINS with JELLO BIAFRA and another one with them and LUSTMORD. Both incredibly awesome albums. Especially the JELVINS. I'd vote for JELLO.

AGENT ORANGE - I love these guys. About a week ago I heard a god-awful cover of their song "Living in Darkness" while I was in Spencers. I promptly went home and listened to the whole album twice.

Falling Sickness was good, but I was always more partial to AGAINST ALL AUTHORITY. At least "Destroy..." and "All Fall Down." And while we're halfway there, why not mention some good ol' ska? My favorites include THE SPECIALS (obviously), MADNESS, THE SELECTOR, BAD MANNERS, SKAVOOVIE AND THE EPITONES, TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS, GANGSTER FUN, SKANKIN' PICKLE, THE RUDIMENTS, THE BUSTERS, BIG LICK, CHECKERBOARD CHARLIE, and MUSTARD PLUG.

Well, I could go on forever. On top of being a movie dork, I'm also a pretty big music one too. Everyone always wondered why I didn't have a car in high school... Great thread. The Meatmen rule RC, don't worry.

About 1994(?) I saw the Melvins on a bill with the Reverend Horton Heat and White Zombie. I went to see the headliner,White Zombie, and came back remebering the MELVINS!!!

wow there has already been a lot of great stuff mentioned.

i'd have to go with the Ramones for sure. some other ones that have stuck with me most through the years: Bad Religion, DK, Crass, the Buzzcocks, the Descendents, Rites of Spring.

also - there's all these other bands that come to my mind that a lot of people would consider punk, but other people wouldn't. like Fugazi, stuff like that.

Title: Re: Punk Rock music
Post by: Amontillado on June 22, 2007, 03:17:03 PM
Yeah, I would put the aforementioned ANGST in that mix. I never really got into FUGAZI, not that I don't like them. I had a bassist once who was obsessed with them. I knew a couple of people who were really into them. I never got it. There are a lot of really good quote/unquote post-punk bands. GANG OF FOUR, WIRE and PERE UBU all come to mind. They were before FUGAZI, but FUGAZI is certainly the next logical step after those guys. There's also THE FALL, but I can't friggin' stand The Fall. My brother loves them. I got most of my pre-90s muscial knowledge from him. He made me various mix tapes (that's the common means of education). He would always put the damn Fall on every tape. "Bingo Masters Breakout" is one of the most annoying songs in history. I quite enjoy some of the "modern post-punk" (for lack of a better term). LIARS are probably the creme of the crop. I also like BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB and INTERPOL. I saw Interpol at Radio City Music Hall. Great show, but I don't really like the whole eMod scene (emo + mod = eMod = my fist). I just want to grab one of them and scream "GIVE ME BACK MY CULTURE!!!" It's a cryin' shame what passes for punk these days.

I like old punk rock, but can't stand the new stuff.  Quite frankly, it has been co-oped.  Many lame bands are calling themselves punk but differ from traditional punk both in sound and ideals.  In fact the label "pop-punk" should be a contradiction.

I agree...what passes for "punk" nowadays is not the real thing...IMHO,it just isn't as spontanious and go-for-broke as the old school stuff.

So, has anyone notuiced how the Clash are actually quite musiclal and melodic?  Its actually not that punk at all.  Frankly, I just don't get punk.  Ska, yes, and the attotudes behind punk yes, but I don't get punk music.  I want to get it, but sadly, do not.

When I first was introduced to punk music in NY by my older brother Mike in the early 80's,I didn't quite get it either. But he made me buy some punk albums...we went to a record store and he picked out some choice ones to "turn me on" to the music: Black Flags DAMAGED,the Sex Pistols, the RAMONES first, and the Cramps GRAVEST  HITS.  He played them constantly...soon I was hooked! Don't really like the  hardcore oi bands,or some of the really depressing stuff too much. I think it's the high energy level and DIY thing about punk that got me going. Still enjoy the old punk...but when I'm sittin'around the house,I generally listen to old 50's and early pre Beatlemania stuff.

Wow!  No love for my favorite band of all time:  The Misfits!!!

"Horror Business" is (thrashy) punk rock perfection.  I dig them because, they had one of the best singers ever, a good mix of fast and slower songs, and all their song are about old horror, sci-fi and B-movies.

Matter of fact, it was because of listening to them as a teenager, that I became a fan of bad movies.  I was curious about the main inspiration of my favorite band.

The Ramones are my second favorite.  Good thing I got to see them before they started dropping like flies.  "Rocket to Russia" is probably the best punk album ever.  It's one of those rare albums that I can just pop in the CD player and listen to from start to finish.

I love The Misfits, but I personally think that Jerry and Glenn can be real tools. Though, Jerry is much less of a tool than Glenn.  I saw the last incarnation with Dez Cadena and Marky Ramone back in '04. That was a pretty awesome show. They broke into some Black Flag and some Ramones as well. The 50s cover album was decent. Isn't Robo playing with them again now?

I preferred Michale Graves singing over Jerry. Though, I'm sure that he doesn't want to have to deal with another lead singer.

I don't know, I never liked the Misfits or the Ramones as much as the New York Dolls, The Clash, or the Dead Kennedys. Though, you really can't put any one over the other outright, in my book anyway. I just think I'd pop in the Dolls' s/t or "Give 'Em Enough Rope" before "Rocket" or "Earth A.D." (though I would burn a copy of the either of the first two with "Death Comes Ripping" and "I Wanna be Well" tacked on the end).

I saw the Misfits in '04.  Jerry was very cool.  After the show he signed autographs for 45 minutes.  I didn't have anything for him to sign but I did have a toy store receipt in my wallet.  :bouncegiggle:  So I have a Jerry Only autograph on a crumpled receipt.

I love the New York Dolls as well.  My friend had a band a while back whose two main influences were the New York Dolls and Misfits.  It was glam-horror-punk kinda thing.  Great stuff.  They broke up unfortunately...mostly because they had all settled down.

Bad Brains has a new album coming out tomorrow.  They're going back to their roots...No reggae!  It's produced by one of the Beastie Boys.  I can't wait to pick it up!

Robo(Black Flag) played with the Misfits when I seen them in Nov. '05.

The Only/Dez/Marky line-up plays in a side project called Osaka Popstar with John Cafiero(I think he's a producer) and Ivan Julian(Richard Hell and The Voidiods). They released a CD which is kinda a poppy punk. It's mainly covers(just 2 original songs) including their own versions of Daniel Johnston's "Wicked World", "Man of Constant Sorrow" from "O Brother, Where Art Thou", Kids of Widney High's "Insects", the theme song to "Astro Boy", and others. Fun CD, if you listen to it not expecting it to sound like Black Flag or the Misfits.

Music wise, I can't listen to any Misfits CDs beyond American Psycho, and even that one was a little too soft for my tastes. I hear mixed things about Danzig as a person. A guy I used to work with who was a manager at Best Buy back when Danzig was probably at his highest commercial success. There was an autograph session at his store and he said that when there weren't any fans around, Danzig was a really quiet, reserved type who drank orange juice and didn't make any of the usual a-hole demands for special treatment. I saw him during his "retirement" tour a couple years ago and enjoyed it, especially when Doyle stomped out onto stage with his giant Frankenstein boots to do all the classic Misfits sets. Also discovered the Polish metal group Behemoth, who, as they said, "we come all the way from Poland to rock with you!".

As far as punk music goes, I listen to anything Rancid related, whether it's regular albums, side projects or solo stuff. My fiancee was awesome enough to treat me to a their last NYC show at BB King's in Times Square last year and it was the coolest show I've ever been to. The crowd was devoted and everybody sang along with each song word-for-word. A fight broke out right next to me, but the guys stopped the show and told the guys to get the f*ck out if they were gonna pull that jock monkey testosterone bullspit at their show. Video screens around the stage played horror movie clips the entire set, including the Evil Dead movies and original Romero Dead trilogy.

We also went to a Bad Religion show last year too, but I'm sorry to say that the crowd banter between songs really blunted my opinions of them as far as being as cool as their music. Still love the tracks, just not sure I'd take in another one of their shows. Pennywise on the other hand were just as angry and loud as their music, which turned out to be my highlight for the show.

I went to the Warped Tour a couple of years ago and one of the only bands I wanted to see was Rancid.  They played 2 and 1/2 songs and then, I guess someone passed out or something because they stopped playing mid-song.  Some medics made their way slowly towards the person (it took them a half hour).  By the time they got the person out of there, Rancid had only time enough for 2 more songs before Less Than Jake was supposed to go on.  Needless to say, I wasn't too happy about it.

I know why Rancid does stops the music if somebody goes down in the pit...A kid died at one of their concerts a while back during a mosh.  But, I payed good money and hung out in the hot sun all day long to hear 4 and 1/2 songs.  I'll never see them again.

Bad Religion is one of my favorite bands to see live.  I actually bumped into the guitar player at a pretty small venue in VA.  He was pretty cool because mostly (I think) that I didn't gush when I saw him or go, "Hey!  Your the guy from Bad Religion".  Most musicians hate that.  We just BS'ed for about five minutes about some of the goobers that were in the outdoor smoking area.  Cool guy.  Shorter and skinnier than you might think

I'm also a fan of the Adverts and the Saints.  Has anyone heard the new Saints album?  I was thinking about picking it up but I'm a little apprehensive about getting it since they haven't put out anything in years.

My brother has a similar story. I guess it's just the whole thing where he never seems to be out of the stage get-up. I guess I can't fault him for that. Glenn's a peckerhead though. A friend of mine met him when he was playing at some festival (maybe Furnace Fest, I'm not sure). Anyway, he asked Glenn for an autograph, and Glenn refused and said something along the lines of him not giving out autographs to someone not able to bench 150. Brian Posehn's W.A.S.P. story reminded me of that.

I like Rancid, but I can't stand any of the side project stuff. I'm not the biggest fan of Lars, and the Transplants make me want to shoot myself in the face with a bazooka. Tim tries waaay too hard nowadays. I went to the Warped Tour in 98 because I wanted to see them, but I missed them on the count of being passed out. You learn life lessons when you're a stupid 17 year old. That day I learned one in the sun is worth two in the shade, and that I was a light weight.

All pits turn into that apeman crap nowadays. There's an ugliniess about it. It used to be everyone was bopping around, some pushing, some shoving, but everyone was concerned with themselves and feeding off of everyone else's energy. Now, most of the guys must "protect their manhood" by beating the p**s out of anyone that touches them, you know. They go in there with something to prove, not because its a release or its what the music prompts them to do. They go in to hurt people because that's what's fun to them.  It's crap like that that makes me think that the movie Idiocracy is going to happen.

Man, I love Gaye Advert. She was my dream woman when I was fourteen! Her and Debbie Harry.
My brother told me that the new Saints was decent. You've got to approach it like all the reunion albums. The Dolls, the Stooges, Stiff Little Fingers, they all put out new material but its more of a vehicle to hit the road with. They know everyone is going to want to hear their old songs, the new stuff is sort of novelty. Except the Damned. I really liked their recent stuff. And the New Model Army of course, but they never really stopped. Their new album is finished! Can't wait for that. Ugh, gonna miss the show unless they head back to NYC or to Boston when they get back from Canada.

the funny thing is most musicans can't bench 150.  They are usually quite thin and weak.

The Ramones, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Misfits, Black Flag...I can listen to their stuff all day long and never get tired of it. I love the quick beats and hopping sounds. Actually punk actually reminds me in some ways of the Beach Rock music of the 1960s (especially the Ramones).

Just watched an Original print of "Rock N Roll High School" a couple of weeks ago.  I must do a review, but it was lots of fun, and I still find it funny that Todd Rundgren, Devo and Van Halen were possibilities instead of the Ramones.  Ah how things may have turned out...

Okay, I have to start by saying that punk music never really grabbed my attention. I do like the Ramones and some individual songs from other bands, but I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan. I'm only posting to this topic because of my niece. She's fourteen and thinks she's a punk rocker. I call her a poser because she has no idea what a true punk is all about (she is extremely whitebread and thinks that Green Day is a great punk band). It's great fun to bait her, even though I am probably just as whitebread as she is (with mayo, no less).

Were/are the Dead Milkmen considered punk or New Wave? I know the hardcore punk fans hated New Wave, but some bands seemed to ride the line, and I always liked at least some of the Dead Milkmen tunes.

I love both late 70s, early 80s punk and 80s New Wave although it became less enjoyable when it turned into mostly soft rock love ballads. New Wave and Punk do have some level of crossover IMO.

I've been into Punk for a very long time.  The music definitely changed my my life for the better.  Just as I was beginning to realize that popular music was crap, and that the values of "normal" society were unacceptable to me, along came punk.  The music really spoke to me.  What a breath of fresh air!  I suddenly had an outlet for my rage, and met people that I actually had a lot in common with.  I like many of the bands already mentioned.  I usually have a favorite band, but that seems to change every few years.  If I had to pick an all-time fave it would probably be the Misfits.  I'm currently "rediscovering" some of my old favorites because I am in the process of putting my old vinyl onto MP3 discs.  Besides the old vinyl (DKs, Minor Threat, Subhumans, Society Dog, DOA, Black Flag, Ramones, Adicts, MDC, Toxic Reasons, and way too many more to list), I've been listening to  a lot of lo-fi garage lately.  One of the newer bands I like a lot are The Coffin Lids.  I've also been getting into a lot of Japanese stuff lately like Supersnazz, Teengenerate, Guitar Wolf, The Jet Boys, and Balzac.  Japanese punk rocks!

Two former favorites that I can't stand anymore are The Clash, and Bad Religion.  The albums "Recipe For Hate" and "Sandinista" were turning points in the wrong direction for those two, and I haven't been able to listen to them since.

A lot of "old-school" punks seem be taking the opinion that punk has been co-opted by the mainstream and is ruined because of bands like Green Day, Blink 182, AFI, etc., but I don't think things have really changed as much as some people think.  There really is no such thing as new school or old school punk.  There is "punk", and there is "not punk," and the true punks know this.  The media and the music industry try to tell us what is punk, but they don't have a clue.  It was the same way back in the 80's when the mainstream was calling Billy Idol, Bow Wow Wow and Elvis Costello punk.  Now it's Blink 182, Green Day, and Good Charlotte!  Different names, same story.  If you want to listen to real punk bands, they are alive and well, and you can find them with a little effort, so the geezers need to stop whining and support the cool bands that are keeping it real!

As far as Danzig goes, for anybody who hasn't seen it yet, here's a vid of his confrontation with a guy backstage at a show. The metal midget is finally put in his place...

I used to listen to LOTS of punk music in the 80's and early 90's....not so much now as I mellow out...(read GOT OLD).Still...oh-whateer! Do you like punk rock, and any favorite...here's some of my favorite punk acts, and my favorite albums by them!
.the RAMONES-Rocket to Russia-all they're stuff,really!
.The STOOGES-the 1st album...'1969' is more than ok...it's titties and beer!
.the DEAD KENNEDYS-a toss up between' Freash Fruit for Rotting Vegtables' and 'Frankenchrist'.the CRAMPS-Bad Music for Bad People-does that mean me?
My favorite band at the moment is THE STOOGES, though they're referred to as "proto-punk" and frankly better than many so-called Punk bands.

Bands like THE CRAMPS were kind of an inside joke, in a good way.   Bad Music For Bad People, I'm sure you know, is a compilation of their best and the one to own.

Does anyone listen to acts like ULTRAVOX, JOY DIVISION, NEW YORK DOLLS, THE SMITHS, WAYNE COUNTY, BLONDIE (yes I actually wrote "Blondie") BUSH TETRAS, CHRONIC SICK, ...?

So, has anyone notuiced how the Clash are actually quite musiclal and melodic?  Its actually not that punk at all.  Frankly, I just don't get punk.  Ska, yes, and the attotudes behind punk yes, but I don't get punk music.  I want to get it, but sadly, do not.
-Ed
Whoever said Punk isn't "musical" or "melodic?"  Perhaps THE CLASH differ from other Punk-labeled bands in that their songs are very often not simple.  THE SPECIALS, with at least a few great Ska albums, were way Punk, though the term is still too loosely used to be ironclad.  If a band was intelligent, political, rocked hard, and were undersold, they were PUNK.

Now you're getting to the root of so-called Punk, which was more intended as a return to the 2.5 minute single and Chuck Berry (and CHESS Records) Surf Music, Rockabilly, than anything else.   All the rest, the politicizing, the antics, are all accoutrement.  It's true that bands like THE RAMONES, for one, missed the heady, fast and hot, quick, singles of early Rock n' Roll and were reacting to the psychedelia and a perceived "overblown" aspect to Acid Rock and Art Rock releases.
Punk wasn't born in New York, Los Angeles, or London.  If you have to pick a city, it was Detroit.  THE STOOGES, though not a true Punk band (were originally called the PSYCHEDELIC STOOGES and such influence is apparent on all three of their albums) presumably inspired a bunch of would be Punk Rock gods with their 1969 release of their first album, one of the most important and prophetic LPs in modern music (though they themselves were not that interested in the 2.5 minute single and had no luck with any).  THE MC5, also from Detroit, invented the definitive Punk Rock sound on their BACK IN THE USA set, sometimes they almost sound like THE CARS... observations like this make me blur the line even further between "Punk" and "New Wave."

Anybody listen to the old 1972 compilation of national and regional hits Nuggets it was re-released as a 4 disk set (from a double LP) including dozens of 60s "garage rock" bands like THE STANDELLS, THE ELECTRIC PRUNES, THE BALOON FARM, THE SEEDS, THE AMBOY DUKES...?

Since I haven't kept up with music much in the last 20 years the only punk I've got is ...

The Sex Pistols
The Clash
The Ramones

Some of these group I saw listed, I've never heard of. Shows you how much out of the loop you get as you get older, get married and have kids.

JOY DIVISION became NEW ORDER after Ian Curtis killed himself.
Too Rye Aye was a damned good album, as I recall; they had a huge international hit with "Come On Eileen."   DEXY'S MIDNIGHT RUNNERS warrant no mention in the Rolling Stone Album Guide of 2004 which does not surprise me as there are many exclusions; the editors of which I emailed regarding exclusion of artists like THOMAS DOLBY.  I never received any response.

ROLLING STONE rag don't know sh!t from apple butter. They pretty much ignored the punk revolution when it was occuring...better to play it safe and retread the hippy dippy stuff, disco, and junk like STYX and BOSTON. Now that it is acknowledged, they jump on the bandwagon and yatter away....

Yeah, don't pay attention to the lists that they put out.  Not just Rolling Stone, but any of those mags, like Blender, Spin, etc.  Most of the lists they put together generally don't mean anything.  It's the same retreaded list, just rearranged differently.

And I wanna know why some artists never seem to get as much recognition as others.  I see Elvis and Chuck Berry listed a lot (I do like both), but not Jerry Lee Lewis or Buddy Holly.

Hello, HappyGilmore.  I was not referring to the Rolling Stone List of 500 Greatest Albums (or whatever) but their book which was compiled the same year!  Albums included in the magazine's TOP 100 were denigrated by the book, and artists who issued such records in some cases are completely ignored (CAPTAIN BEEFHEART'S Trout Mask Replica made the top 100, but warrants no review at all in the 2004 guide!)  To me, it's editorial idiocy; Rolling Stone, though currently enmired, was and remains an important American paper that has covered, dis-covered, and mis-covered all areas of ROCK and POP, with some damned great journalism along the way as well as a fair amount of pomposity.  It's amazing to think when they started out, they were counter-culture!

I don't care for JERRY LEE LEWIS so much, and when I hear him referred to as "The Killer" I think of the plane he sold to RICK NELSON...I do recognize that he was important and recorded some superior records.  BUDDY HOLLY made #92 with a 20 track collection; JERRY LEE LEWIS does not make the top 100.  BUDDY HOLLY, though remembered fondly, is largely overlooked, which is a damned shame considering he was of such rare genius!

Yes! Metal Maniacs is (sorry, was) a well written, dare I say intelligent metal mag. I read the mag from the very beginning. My favorite period was when they had actual musicians writing for it (Alicia Morgan - 13, Mike Williams - Eyehategod, Kevin Sharp - Brutal truth, etc.)
And yeah, RCMerchant, Cannibal Corpse clones SUCK. So called "brutal" death metal is for hicks.

And the letters page was always interesting, where everything from politics and religion was discussed, unlike the lame crap published in most music 'zines...MM really went out on a limb to give ink to unknown, underground punk,metal...all sortsa stuff!

You made me think.
Are the Beatles punk?
Punk isnt just loud music-it's an attitude-it's rebellion.
The Beatles had plenty of that.
The establishment at the time hated them-for a minute-then they loved the "mop tops".
Then they reinvented themselvels-and if people say drugs had nothing to do with it-they would be WRONG.
Drugs had lots to do with it.
And then the "Establishment" hated them again.
So were they "punk"?
You brought up a good point Hallows-one I cant answer-I do know this-

I love punk rock.
This is a good place to post punk.
Hallows-I dont consider the Beatles proto punk-The Stones-yeah-but not the Beatles-I love the Beatles-they aint punk. The Aztec-oh yeah! Gonn! OOOH YEAH!
THIS is punk.
http://youtu.be/Cjd01Cup8yw (http://youtu.be/Cjd01Cup8yw)
What exactly is "Punk"?  RAMONES took their name from a PAUL pseudonym.  Sure, BEATLES aren't Punk.  Or are they?

You made me think.
Are the Beatles punk?
Punk isnt just loud music-it's an attitude-it's rebellion.
The Beatles had plenty of that.
The establishment at the time hated them-for a minute-then they loved the "mop tops".
Then they reinvented themselvels-and if people say drugs had nothing to do with it-they would be WRONG.
Drugs had lots to do with it.
And then the "Establishment" hated them again.
So were they "punk"?
You brought up a good point Hallows-one I cant answer-I do know this-
I love the Beatles!

You argue my point better than I could!!   :teddyr:
I think the Punk Rock and New Wave owe a lot to the Fab Four, and the Stones..., and dress designers!!   :bouncegiggle:

Punk is a vibe or attitude. I probably didn't have to say that.
Take a band like EyeHateGod. Sounds like Black Sabbath being gang raped by `My War`era Black Flag. Mike`s vocals are REALLY punk too.

THE DEAD KENNEDYS must have had JAYNE COUNTY in mind when they named an album Plastic Surgery Disasters... JAYNE does make a point, though.  What is PUNK?

Killing Joke's early material was quite punk - maybe post punk, but hey, they're one of my all time faves. After theiir first few albums they totally went into an almost synthpop sound (which is quite excellent though). Then they changed their style again into an industrial metal vibe. A very important group and a massive influence on many musicians. HAIL!

What bores you about them AHD? I think they're one of the most repulsive hard drug driven bands out there. They were all big time junkies around the time of that album. A million death metal bands can grunt about death and pain, but EHG really mean it. And what have you got against egg gargling vocals? Mike's screams just ooze with filth, disease and addiction. But hey, to each their own.

I agree with you to a point AHD. It's not the fact that I think they are legitemate because of their substance abuse. I just think they're an honest band singing about what they know. What would have happened to a band like The Stooges if they didn't use drugs?
