Title: Road To Bali (1952)
Post by: Scott on June 23, 2007, 08:47:29 PM
ROAD TO BALI (1952) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0045094/) - Bob Hope and Bing Crosby star in this fun little comedy. Our duo take a jobs as deep sea divers in Bali when nobody else will take the job because of a giant squid protecting a lost treasure. They have lots of inside type jokes that are pretty good and a couple times they talk right into the camera. This is one of those films you can find anywhere on DVD for $1 and it's well worth a dollar. One of the things I don't like about these Hollywood films is that they rarely used people of foriegn origin to play the parts like in this one they use Americans to play Indonesians.

  (7 out of 10 Stars) Never really liked Bob Hope films, but this one was ok. Maybe I'll check out the rest of his road movies.

  The Road Shows also star the wonderful Dorothy Lamour (except for Hong Kong which had Joan Collins).  They are all terribly formulaic, so Scott, I think you'll enjoy the others equally well.  It has been quite a while since I've seen them, and memory has blurred them all together, but from what I remember Rio was my favorite.

Road to Singapore (1940)
Road to Zanzibar (1941)
Road to Morocco (1942)
Road to Utopia (1946)
Road to Rio (1947)
Road to Bali (1952)
Road to Hong Kong (1962)

There was going to be an eighth called Road to the Fountain of Youth, but Crosby passed away before production began.

Iv'e seen a few of Bob and Bings pictures, but I get the titles mixed up! I prefer Bob Hopes solo movies much more, such as GHOST BREAKERS,THe CAT AND THE CANARY<MY FAVORITE BRUNETTE<AND CASANOVA"S NIGHT OUT (was that the title?). I do enjoy the ROAD pictures, though.
Comedy teams...of the ones named,I would pick Laurel and Hardy...but my favorite is missing...THE 3 STOOGES!!!  :buggedout: WOOWOOWOO!

EDIT: I remember now! It was CASANOVAS BIG NIGHT!

I have not seen any of those "Road" films in years. I really would like to take another look. Are any available on DVD? A box set of all seven would be awesome, but I won't hold my breath. As for comedy teams, I have to go with old Bud and Lou (Abbott and Costello). I watched those movies to death as a kid and still love them to this day.

All the Road To... movies are available on DVD. The box set does not contain all seven of them, however; it is missing (I think) Bali and Hong Kong, but as Scott says, Bali is easily available, and Hong Kong isn't really that good; it is more of a sixties-style movie that doesn't work as well with Hope & Crosby at the helm. These are among my favorite films. Yes, they are formulaic, but I watch them more for the chemistry between Hope, Crosby & Lamour than for the plot. It is obvious they are having fun in the film, and that fun is contagious. I showed these films to my daughter (teenager), and she loves them as well.

That said, I also love the Marx Bros., though I haven't yet bought their movies on DVD yet; those collections are more expensive.

Thanks for the info!  I may have to track these down.

All good post. I added THE THREE STOOGES, but I have to pick ABBOTT AND COSTELLO also. They are the greatest. Started to get into THE MARX BROS. films this year. Enjoy them also.

ROAD TO BALI is in one or two of the Mill Creek 50 Movie packs that I bought, but I haven't watched it yet.

My favorite team is tha Marx Brothers.  I have their entire DVD collection and I think it's great.

Lets see I have ALL of the Marx Brothers, ALL of the Crosby and Hope Road Shows, ALL 4 Abbott and Costello Collections, ALL of the Three Stooges (Even the ones neither officially released) and a lot of Laurel and Hardy they really need to release more of those to DVD.

You left off Martin and Lewis ... I loved them as a kid, but only slightly liked them as an adult. Some of them are really funny, others are just goofy.

There are a bunch more comedy teams that are great, I watch more old movies and than about anything.

I have all of these films, in addition to the Marx Bros sets, and the Thin Man movies.  Road to Utopia was my favorite when I did a first run-through, I will probably watch them again sometime and get new opinions.

Actually,. technically, "My Favorite Brunette" is not a "solo Bob Hope film," as Bing Crosby also appears in it, even if it is in a cameo role. Here are some more of Bob Hope's films, excluding the "Road" films in which Bing Crosby appears with Bob Hope.

Alias Jesse James
Cancel My Reservation
My Favorite Blonde
Off Limits
The Princess and the Pirate
The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Farrell
Son of Paleface
They Got Me Covered

And the title is "Casanova's Big Night," And if you like your villains, like I do, then watch this film. It probably has the greatest collection of villains ever gathered in one film.

I really like THE PRINCESS AND THE PIRATE. Watched it 2 or 3 times as a kid.
