Title: 1000's and 1000's line up for the iPhone ....
Post by: CheezeFlixz on June 29, 2007, 08:18:55 AM

Why does the phrase "Get a life .." come to mind? I was by a store yesterday that had people lined up waiting on this phone and they all looked so excited ... I couldn't help but walk by them and say .... "It's a stinkin' phone, for chrissake." Appeared to be mostly young adults and or college kids and mostly with no life.

NOTE: If you waited in line to get a PHONE ... I'm truly sorry.

Heck, I don't even have a regular cell phone.  Can't recall ever having lined up to be the first on my block to have any new consumer item.

Lets see. Line up for days to spend over $600 for a cell phone which will probably break/ or be obsolete sooner than they realize. Smooth.

I don't see what the big deal is with the anger against the line sitters.  People line up for weeks to see the new Star Wars film, but people are treated with disdain for waiting in line for a new Apple product.  I don't understand it.

I'm one of the ones that would actually like to own an iPhone.  I certainly am not going to spend 600 dollars on one, and AT&T doesn't service my area so the phone functionality of the device would be nonexistent for me.  I'd like to have one so I can quit carrying around so much crap with me.  I carry my cell phone, iPod and Nintendo DS on my person most of the time due to the fact that I need to have access to telecommunications most of the time for work related reasons.  The iPod is just there for multimedia (video/music/etc) and the DS is there as a lightweight internet browser.

I'd like to own an iPhone since it does all of these things, and apparently does so quite well.  What amazes me with this iPhone launch is that everyone wants one, especially those who have no need for it's internet browsing functionality and such.  I'm assuming most of them are buying the iPhones, just to throw them on Ebay and make some quick, easy, cash.

And honestly, where do you get the feeling that you should pass judgment on those in the line?  Doesn't the phrase "Get a life..." apply to those who would b***h about such a thing on an internet forum?

I wouldn't wait in line to see Star Wars, I wouldn't wait in line to get a XBox360 or a PlayStation or a Tickle Me Elmo ... soot I won't wait in line to buy stamps and I actually need those from time to time. It's takes far less time to point out the insanity of waiting in long lines for something material that is more often then not, a want than a need, than it is to actually wait in line for it. I say a mere nano-fraction of the time.
But hey if you want to stand out on the street and wait for hours on in to be the first kid on the block with a new gadget ... go for it. This is America by God and you're given right to do that!!  :teddyr:

But, I'll still think it's silly. :tongueout:

 What's an iphone?
I would stand in line for FREE stuff! Free is good! Or MONEY!!! But to buy something...nah. I would just wait for all the hoopla to die down...or better yet...wait a few years for the prices to go down. Look at DVD players...they were an arm and a weiner a few years ago..now they give them away at Sinister Cinema when you order a few DVDs...(or they usta...)

It's $600.00 and $60 month for a 2 year contract.

It's a phone, web browser, PDA, calculator, picture viewer, it slices, it dices, it juliennes ...

My goal is to get through my entire life without one. I commute about 100 miles a day now, so I really need to get one for auto emergencies and such. But I'm still refusing to get one. There is an inborn stubborn streak  in my family a mile wide that's not easily overcome.

I have a deal with my techno-obsessed friends (I have a surprising number of them): I don't make fun of them for their constant desire to get the latest electronic gadget and they don't call me a "Some Kinda Backwoods Luddite".

Those people with the Bluetooth headset still look like The Borg to me, and I sometimes can't resist asking them if resistance is futile.

I've been in the computer business for 28 years and I have never had a use for gadgets.

For years as a field engineer I carried a little notepad and pen to keep up with my calls. At my current job, my boss got me a PDA and I ended up giving it away to someone else.  Now I have  a Cingular 8125 pocket PC at work which is good for playing solitare during meetings and reading email, other than that it is a lousy telephone.  The dial pad is on the screen, which you can't even see when outdoors.

My personal cell phone is the free Samsung they were giving out when I changed my plan a couple of years ago.  I only carry one so family can get hold of me when I'm out of pocket and  I want a plain and simple phone that works.

The only real morons in the iphone story are the news media, they literally saved Apple millions in advertising by showing us those lines of the gadget obsessed rather than the real news.

By the way here is a link to Apple's next hot product (http://nationalnitwit.blogspot.com/2007/06/apple-flush-with-dealer-orders-for-new.html).

My sentiments exactly.  Unfortunately....

A few years ago, my wife broke down in MY TRUCK in Charlotte, NC at aournd midnight.  She had to walk nearly two miles to a working pay phone to call me.

After that, I got her a phone.

I later got one for my business, but I quit using it.

Now, her work virtually requires her to have  cell phone.  She got a family plan, so I got one, too, in the deal.  I hardly ever use it, but it WAS cool calling her from the boat offshore outside Cape Fear Inlet a couple of months ago.

Now regular phones I could do without as well.  I lived in Colorado for a year with no phone.  It was great.  Everyone thought I was nuts - "how can you not have a phone?"  I just smiled.

I'm with you guys; I talk alot on the phone to earn my living.  Why would I want my calls to follow me around?  Back when I was a kid I practically lived on the phone, but now avoid long telecons with anyone but those I won't be seeing.    Now, if I was still commuting 80+ miles one way each day, I would probably give in and get one.
I'm not a line setter, either, Cheezeflix, so I can relate.

I have pretty much refused to own a cell phone.  Katie has one for emergencies or trips (most of the time it sits on the counter, connected to its charger).  In any case, there are times when I want to go do something without having to worry that someone is going to call me.

Did anyone catch the news story about the iPhone battery replacement issue?  Seems that replacing the battery might be a bit of a hassle:

I saw a news story the other day that a number of them have already broke. And another story about an issue with the battery. Yet another reason I stay behind the techno-curve, I want to big bug out before I buy something.
