Title: UNDERRATED?
Post by: Allhallowsday on July 02, 2007, 07:02:23 PM
WHAT MOVIES ARE UNDERRATED?
What film does everybody hate that you love?  What film do you love, or simply find interesting, and disagree with the consensus regarding the film(s)?   What reviled flick has merit?

I just recently sat thru the seldom seen STAIRCASE (1969) on TCM, and though I can't crow about it being a forgotten masterpiece or even an overlooked gem, it's definitely worth a look for its two stars, Richard Burton and Rex Harrison.  Interestingly, the previous time the two had been paired on-screen was in CLEOPATRA (1963) for which Liz Taylor was paid the first ever million dollar fee.

These two pros were paid $1 million a piece for playing, of all things, a longterm gay couple facing middle-age spread, baldness, aged mothers, and their constant bickering.  Apparently denigrated or disparaged by all film critics, including Robert Osborne and his guest programmer (?) for TCM's "Screened Out" series of films this past month, I did find it slow, boring in the beginning, annoyingly self-conscious particularly in Rex Harrison's performance, yet it somehow manages to come together and reveal a certain candid truth about relationships.   Hence, I don't think it's as terrible as I had read for many years.  Dated, sure, and yet had some tellingly relevant commentary about adoption.  Rex Harrison as a weepy queen?  Believe me, it is hard to sit thru this one at certain points, but you won't soon forget it!   :teddyr:

I prefer Critters I and  II to the Gremlins films...not many would agree.

Jaws II...not as good as the original, but unfairly panned by most critics IMO

Happy Gilmore...Adam Sandler should annoy me but somehow he doesn't.

I also think "So I Married An Axe Murderer" is Mike Myers's best film. not sure if it's considered terrible but you never really see it mentioned in the same breath as Wayne's World or Austin Powers.

Well, I've always liked The Fifth Element starring Bruce Willis, though some of the humor in it is rather cheesy and the ending's a bit cliched. I never understood why the critics hated it so much, though.

Bonfire of the Vanities was a good film too (also starring Bruce Willis, oddly enough) and I never could understand why the critics panned it. Granted, the misbehavior of the rich and spoiled is kind of disgusting to behold on the big screen, but all that immorality never bothered any of these same critics in other movies. The scene in which the put-upon Sherman drives all of his wife's party guests out of his apartment with a shotgun was priceless. I also liked the satire on Al Sharpton (the "Reverend Bacon") and the mayor's rantings. ("I don't care if today--is her mother's--bar mitzvah! You go NOW!!!") The only review I ever saw that gave any clear reason why the critics didn't like that one was Ebert's, and his complaint was that the movie wasn't over-the-top enough. (Huh?)

Steven Spielberg's film AI: Artificial Intelligence also has me wondering what's wrong with the critics. Come on, people! It's got a good story, the story's got depth to it, and Kubrick's twisted sense of humor shines through in a lot of scenes as well. What's not to like? I heard some people claim it was an emotionally manipulative film, but I thought that was sort of the point: to make you ask why your sympathies are with the young robot David in the one scene where he's pleading for his life with the people at the flesh fair, and yet you don't feel so bad for the loss of robotic life later on when you see David bash the head off of another robot who looks just like him. I like a film that inspires that kind of internal conflict in the viewer and makes him think.

Maybe I ought to do a corresponding thread in our Bad Movies section on films everyone else liked that I hated. (That's relatively few, since I tend to take a more forgiving view of most films' inadequacies than other reviewers, but I never really liked The Rocky Horror Picture Show, for one.)

Interesting choices, I think I particularly agree about JAWS II which was no JAWS, but JAWS II was everything everyone expected and should have expected...and also happened to be tackily 70s entertaining.

I like THE FIFTH ELEMENT, too, but not sure why!
I was so excited to see A.I. that when the rotten reviews and viewer response became apparent I skipped it and have yet to see it!!! Now with your recommendation, I will give it a shot.

yeah, not that tacky tho'...the scene where cheif brody is filling those bullet tips with cyanide is pretty intense and eerie....the burning woman on the boat scene is quite harsh as well!

Movies I like that everybody hates:
Maximum Overdrive, Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera, Ghost Rider, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, The Hulk, Mallrats, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, Car 54 Where Are You?

Movies I feel are OVER rated:
Wes Craven's New Nightmare, Scream, The Blair Witch Project, Halloween, Godzilla 2000, The Departed

good film, good soundtrack. I think "Who Made Who" was the first cassette album I ever bought. saw the film after...

I don't hear of  people  hating  these movies, just most have never heard of them:

Parents with Randy Quaid, where the kid finds out what the "leftovers" his folks are feeding him are.

Moving with Richard Pryor.

One people groan when I tell them I like:

Police Academy Like I read someone else say(may have been on this board a while back, not sure), I think the sequels are what really makes people scoff at the mention of this movie.

.ANACONDA-I hear lotsa groans about this one...I don't care. I like it!
.ACE VENTURA-PET DETECTIVE
My kids hate most of the movies I like...of course,I like a lotta garbage...that's why I am here!

All the Alien and Predator sequels. Yes, I like 'em all. ROBOCOP 2 and 3. The Rocky Sequels. Most of these delivered what I was looking for from them, only ROCKY V kind of disappointed me. TERMINATOR 3 too was far better than I was expecting. MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME too.

Also feel the following are underrated:

2010
THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI
ANDROID (1982)
THE BLACK HOLE
THE CAR
THE ARRIVAL (1996)
CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
DEEP RED (1994)
DR. STRANGE (1978)
MONSTER FROM THE OCEAN FLOOR
PANIC IN YEAR ZERO!
TASTE OF FEAR
THE UNDEAD (1957)
THE WEREWOLF (1956)
WOLFEN

Title: Re: UNDERRATED?

Agreed on The Werewolf, The Undead and Panic In the Year Zero, Jase, all very watchable, interesting variations on themes handled in better known but not necessarily better films. I haven't seen the others in your list.

Apropos of the OP and staircases I'd like to nominate the 1946 Robert Siodmak The Spiral Staircase, the best lady in distress thriller I've ever seen, and by far the most atmospheric. That they had a generous budget, thanks to Selznick and Schary's involvement, helped enormously.

Also better than its reputation might indicate is the 1948 The Accused, sort of lady in  distress also, with Loretta Young as a professor involved in a murder case. Nicely directed by Wm. Dieterle, with fine supporting performances.

Another from Dieterle, Dark City, Charlton Heston's Hollywood debut, in which he's literally "introduced" as Charlton Heston, is a very professional job, mostly done in studio (but what's the harm in that?). Liz Scott sings one too many songs for comfort, or mine anyway, but Viveca Lindfors' performance helps make up for this somehow; and we get to see Jack Webb, very early in his career, his future partner (hmm...I mean on Dragnet), Harry Mogan, plus Don DeFore (don't laugh, he's very good), the always reliable Ed Begley, the always smug Dean Jagger and a barely glimpsed at Mike Mazurki (one glimpse is enough with him).

Hi Telegonus,
Not sure I agree that THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE is underrated; it's certainly well known, and I think it works well (Ethel Barrymore is always a treat).

I can't laugh at Don DeFore, as he was much more talented than his longtime appearance on "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet" TV show might imply.  Ed Begley was a superb actor (can't claim the same for his son) but Dean Jagger always smug . . . ?  Hmm, y'know, Dean Jagger was always smug!   :bouncegiggle:

OVER Rated:

The Blair Witch Project

Now, you see, that's one I liked that so many didn't.  I like the fact that it was an original idea (no script, set-up like it COULD be real) - or if not totally original, at least DIFFERENT from the typical Hollywood formulaic crap.

I was smiling all through TBWP when I saw it on the big screen.  It was just....fun.  Not really scary, but perhaps creepy if you let it be.  The premise for the story certainly was well thought out in terms of being easy to be self contained.

What I find interesting is that we BEG filmmakers to take a chance, to do something different.  Then, when the do, when they really experiment with filmmaking, it gets panned for being too different, or not working completely, or for this or that triviality.  No wonder so many young up-and-coming film makers follow the Hollywood molds - it's a safer way to make a buck.

I liked the BLAIR WITCH PROJECT as well. It was really quite spooky, the charecters were interesting, even if the camcorder effect was kinda farfetched. It was alot better than most of the crap out at the time...I mean, how many times can you you remake FRIDAY the 13th,HALLOWEEN,Or NIGHTMARE on ELM STREET? There are BAD movies, (ie: FRNKENSTIEN's DAUGHTER) and their areBORING movies(most of the FRIDAY the 13th series)

I enjoy it when creative talents try something different, but I'm talking The Item different, not over-hyped media machine (that's since only been out-overdone by Snakes on a Plane) "three bad improv actors try to pretend they're scared while the extent of their adlibbing consists of dropping 20 or so f-bombs every 12 seconds" kind of crap that the first Blair Witch gave me. I gave it a chance. I saw it in a theater. I went into it open minded and I went alone to avoid the urge to MST3K the crap out of it. I left the theater $8 lighter and with chills running across my skin... thanks to the cranked AC in the theater. The "lets pretend this is real footage" gimmick was used 30 years earlier in Cannibal Holocaust and the improv should be left to professionals like Sasha Baron Cohen and the folks in "Whose Line is it Anyway?". But, and here's the all important disclaimer, that's just my opinion.  :teddyr:

 Hi Allallowsday,

Oh, I know that The Spiral Staircase has a good reputation and is generally held in high regard but I think it's even better than just being a really good thriller. To my way of thinking it's a classic. My sense is that the casting of George Brent, somewhat past his prime (such as he had one) hurts the film with the critics and historian. Had his part been played by Joseph Cotten the movie would probably have a better reputation (much as Brent in the Cotten role in Gaslight might have brought that film's reputation down a bit).  I say this with no disrespect to Mr. Brent himself, who was very good in the movie, but his journeyman reputation, his status as Bette Davis's favorite leading man, rather than as a star in his own right,  dragged the picture down somewhat in the prestige department.  I think that The Spiral Staircase is as good and probably better than most of Hitchcock's films from the same period, and I vastly prefer it to Spellbound, Notorious and The Paradine Case. Overall, I don't think that Siodmak was in Hitchcock's league as a director, but when he was good, he was really good.

I thought Blair Witch was fairly descent.  It kept a certain level of suspense going, though I would never want to see it a second time because some of the characters were soooooooo annoying, like that idiot that threw the map away.

The SADIST-The little movie with Arch Hall jr. and his girl freind who terrorize 3 school teachers in an auto junkyard. A great, suspenseful film that was waaaay ahead of it's time.
.KILL,BABY,KILL- Mario Bava's ghost story, with the spirit of a little girl that announces death for all that see her. A truly scary movie...and the photography is beautiful! The music score, with the little girl giggling,is really spooky too! My favorite Bava film. I think the title turns people off, thinking it's some kinda psycho killer kinda movie! HIGHLY recommended!!!
.BURN,WITCH,BURN- Mostly forgotton today, but a great movie about a teachers wife, and her (maybe) occult powers, that drive her husband apes**t. Been along time since Iv'e seen it...but not so long that it hasn't stuck with me after 30 odd years.
.I MARRIED a MONSTER from OUTER SPACE-Another  expliotive title for a good little sci-fi movie!  Not some goofy schlock like TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN. (Which is great in it's own trashy way!)

Recently sat thru THE SADIST on TCM, man that was hard to take, but well done and owes everything to Arch Hall Jr.
I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE is interesting for the fact that dialogue exchanged between Tom Tryon and Gloria Talbott makes it clear to the viewing audience that Mr. Farrell (as the alien doppelganger) did not have carnal knowledge of Mrs. Farrell . . .
Hmmm.... I recall these getting slammed as stupid, but I enjoy them ...

Judge Dread
Dungeons & Dragons

If enjoying these movies is stupid, then call me Retardo Montleban. Even with Rob Schneider (the former) and Marlon Wayans (the latter) in them, I was just as shocked as most of my friends to discover I actually had fun watching both of these! Granted, neither one will ever warrant a remake, a Broadway musical adaptation, or a spot on any AFI Top 100 lists anytime soon, but they were fun to watch. Besides, D&D had Bruce Payne in it, so it comes with a set of built-in awesome points!... blue lipstick aside... :teddyr:

A lot of sequels are better than people say, two immediately come to mind that were even better than their precursor in a lot of ways.

Child's Play 2
and The Return of Count Yorga

Unfortunately, these are seen as a lot of people to be rip offs of their originals. Though they are similar in a few ways, shouldn't they be? They're about the same antagonists aren't they?

Child's Play 2 had more killing than the first, scarier killings, and yes, more suspense. Andy saw Chucky come back, his adoptive parents killed, and the final battle was one of the bloodiest deaths of a doll ever captured on screen!

Return of Yorga wasn't as scary as the first, but was still plenty creepy in parts, and had noticeably better acting, not to mention the characters were more explored.

Apparently I got really buzzed one night and just kept saying Rob Schneider's "Okay Mr. 'I am the law'." line over and over. My girlfriend laughed at it for the first hour, then got really annoyed for the rest of the time afterwards... sad.

I think Daredevil get's a little too harsh treatment. Though I've read very little of the character I will admit. I loved Bullseye and the Kingpin. I do hear that the director's cut is better.

Godzilla Final Wars. Seems pretty 50/50 to me but I still think it's underrated. I liked it on first viewing but it's grown on me. Second best of the Millenium series.

GMK, again needs more fans. The best of the Millenium series.

I just bought this on DVD a few weeks back and the only reaction I seem to get from people is "Why the Hell would you buy Hudson Hawk!?". I don't get the constant panning either. I think that it's monster box office failure just spooked a lot of people and it's since gained an almost legendary status as something terrible that no one should ever watch, but should instead be criticized by these people none-the-less.

Then again, I'm sure there actually are plenty of people who watched and did in fact hate it. It's not for everybody though.  :tongueout:

THE PATRIOT with Mel Gibson is one of my favorite films of all time . . . but the critics sure hated it!!

I've watched it twice, but I was forced two since both times I watched it, it was for educational purposes and was tested on it.  I never cared for it, I'm not much a Revolutionary War buff, so I didn't get into it too much.

This are the movies that I think are underrated:

All of the Rocky Movies (I even liked Rocky 5, Rocky Balboa was awesome in every way)
The Godfather Part III (I get laughed at work because I liked this film)
Highlander II (The most recent version is the best that it can be, It's not bad but not good either)
All of the Star Wars prequels (well 1 was ok 2 and 3 were good)
Mommie Dearest (I am a guy and loved this film even though I am not gay at all)
The first 3 American Ninja Films (4 was not that good, and I am avoiding 5 at all costs)
Best of the Best 1 and Best of the Best 2
All of the Kickboxer movies
Office Space (Still a favorite of mine)
Clerks (I agreed with that film on so many level)
Date Movie (I loved it)
Heaven's Gate
The Karate Kid Part 2 and Part 3
Equalibream
The Grudge

Overrated films:

Borat (I've only say 40 minutes and I did not enjoy it)
Titanic (Bad, Bad, BAD)

Edit Note:

I had The Trial of Billy Jack as underrated and after some much though of the matter, I've changed my mind and removed it.  It was a bad film, but I enjoyed it, because it was so bad it was good.

Kudos to everyone who gives A.I. a chance, it's certainly love or hate...but the people who hate it are wrong.  :tongueout:

Pretend that it's not endorsed by any big names.

Also, rent "The Wicker Man". If you haven't seen the latest Nick cage 'version', don't. I am 100% sure, just from the previews, that giving it the same name is an insult to this rare gem.

It's obscurity adds to it's charm, but it also deserves a much bigger cult following for its astounding mixture of genres.

I think "Medicine Man" is a VERY underrated movie, it's one of our frequent re-watchers. The Jackyl is another, we seem to watch whatever portion of it is remaining when we see it is on, but never really looked for it. Even though it made loads of money, I rarely hear someone talk about "The Matrix Revolution" without complaining about it. I think it's one of the best modern movies made.
"Hollywood Kniights" is one movie that it seems only 1 in 1000 people have seen, but I think it's hilarious. Another is "Wonderland", good movie, kinda sad overall. "The Cannonball Run" is another that I think is real good, , but the sequil was a major letdown.

OOoh, I liked that one!  I really like Robert Downey Junior and I'll watch anything he's in, and I thought this was one of his better performances.

As I've said here before, I liked Ghosts of Mars, thought I'm not completely sure why.  Another underrated Carpenter flick is Prince of Darkness, I'll watch that one whenever it's on.

In no way can I help you with that first statement, as I tried to like Ghosts of Mars and still couldn't. As for Prince of Darkness, you're absolutely right and it is entirely underrated. The few times I actually come to John Carpenter's defense (such as the topic of "Who sucks more: John Carpenter or Wes Craven?"), I always note Price of Darkness.

SCARS of DRACULA with Christopher Lee allways seems to get a badshake, and I don't seem to understand why. Sure,it's bloody, sadistic, and violent, but so what? It gave Lee more screen time than most o the previous Hammer series Dracula films put together! Also FRANKENSTEIN and the MONSTER from HELL...many call it the worst in that series,no classic, but lot's of fun.

MANIAC COP 2 was a great action film as well, yet it is barley ever given a footnote anywhere...very cool and nonstop action. The scene in the convience store is wild!!!! As is the bus chase! Great performances all around as well!

Josie And The p***ycats.    Yep I'm serious, its actually a really clever film plot wise when it comes to explaining pop culture phenomenon.

Well not in R1 but you can get Manic Cop 1 and 2 from Europe for 7.99 euros ($10.80)

I don't hear of  people  hating  these movies, just most have never heard of them:

Parents with Randy Quaid, where the kid finds out what the "leftovers" his folks are feeding him are.

Parents, was one of those movies that gets burned into your brain at a young age. one day i'll get around to watching it again. Ravenous was another underrated cannibal comedy.

I'm still not entirely convinced that Parents doesn't deserve it's obscure status, I have to agree that Ravenous is one of those too often overlooked gems that deserves a larger audience. It's probably the only context in which I can stomach David Arquette... no pun intended.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1
Cannibal The Musical
Dumb and Dumber (I know a few people who hate it.)
The Cable Guy (VERY Underrated.  Genius flick.  Everybody hates it.)
Undercover Brother
Ed Wood (I think I'm the only person I  know who's seen it.)
Man on the Moon (That Andy Kaufman movie with Jim Carrey.)

Ed Wood took forever to get to dvd.  Soon as it got released I bought it just in case they like, recalled it or something.

Johnny Depp was great, and Landau rocked it as Bela.

Another one here for the Ed Wood fans. It's a movie that's deceptively perfect for Tim Burton because despite it's lack of big freaky set pieces and nightmarish characters, Ed's childlike enthusiasm and undying optimism make him the perfect hero for a Tim Burton movie. The only problem I had with it was that after watching it I couldn't look at an Ed Wood movie without thinking about the man grinning behind the camera in his pink angora sweater and living his dream. You can't watch a movie made by a guy like that and say it's the worst movie ever made! You just can't!

As such, let's hope that Tim Burton doesn't try to do the same for any other crap movie directors like Buchanan, Charles Band or the Polonias, otherwise bad movie reviewers will be out of a job...

I loved Ed Wood as well.  I didn't think Jeffrey Jones did a good jobs as Criswell.  I saw bits and pieces of Man on the Moon on my flight to Japan about 5 years ago (I feel asleep during parts of the film)

The Cable guy was ok, it wasn't bad, but wasn't good either.  I don't think I could watch it again though.

I don't agree regarding JEFFREY JONES, who does not "re-create" CRISWELL, certainly, but does kind of humanize and explain this most artificial of pop culture turds...  :bouncegiggle:

I really liked Waterworld.  Kevin Costner did a good job and the idea of dirt being more coveted than gold was interesting.

Battlefield Earth.  Let the howls begin.  It was cheesy and silly and John Travolta in platforms was a sight to behold, but I loved it.  I found myself cheering when the humans rose up against the aliens.

Snakes on a Plane.  The special effects were well done and I just love Samuel L Jackson.  'Nuff said.

Starship Troopers.  This is one of my faves.  But I love Verhoeven's movies anyway.

Escape From New York/LA.  John Carpenter is a favourite in our house and these two were pure escapist nonsense.

Oof...I didn't know it was possible to like Battlefield Earth.  I can't truly judge it since I've never seen the entire thing, but the parts I've seen were so bad that it baffled me.

As for Escape from New York, I don't think it's underrated, rather it's well regarded by many people.  But L. A. is underrated for sure.  It's not at good as the first, but it's over the top enough to be entertaining.  I mean, it's got Kurt Russell surfing with Peter Fonda through an L. A. street!

Mystery Men- Vastly underrated in my opinion.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie- Decent enough kids flick.
Return to Oz- Shame it wasn't a bigger hit.
Little Nicky- Downright hilarious.

I LOVE this movie!  Sure, it has it's flaws but it's more faithful to the Baum books than the Judy garland version.  I love the dark take on Oz that the director had.  I'd like to see another Oz movie that tempers the darkness with  lightheartedness.

Take this for what it's worth:

Sci-Fi Channel has an upcoming remake/re-imagining of the Wizard of Oz, called Tin Man.  It stars Alan Cumming as Scarecrow, Richard Dreyfuss as the Wizard, and Zooey Deschanel (Elf), as Dorothy.

It's a science fiction type remake.  I heard it's a miniseries though, so it's probably gonna be like, 6 hours long.

"House of Dracula"  -It's considered by many to be the low point of the classic Universal horror era.  I love this movie and all of its over-the-top monster madness.  With Dracula, the Wolf Man, Frankenstein's monster, A Jekyll/Hyde type mad scientist, and a hunchback all in the same movie how can you go wrong?  The only thing that would have made it better is if Bela Lugosi had played Dracula.  John Carradine is still great though.  This one is always a lot of fun to watch and is probably my second favorite Universal horror flick just below "Bride of Frankenstein."

I also think the entire spaghetti western genre is WAY underrated!

Has anyone ever seen IMPULSE with William Shatner? aka WANNA RIDE,LITTLE GIRL? Bill plays a real creepy scumbag psycho. It has weird child molester overtones...so mebbe that's why it doesn't get too much air play.

The Shat goes WAAAY over the top (more than usual) in this one! His performance makes this a real classick! I saw it only once...in the seventies at the movie theater! In-friggin-credible!

Since I've been on a Kubrick kick lately, I'll say Eyes Wide Shut.  Hated it my first time with it but with more viewings, I've found it to be much much more than just a skin flick.  Fantastic film that a lot of people just don't talk about enough.

Also, RC, Impulse looks great!  Might have to search that one out.

RETURN TO OZ was wonderful and way underrated!!!

I really liked Waterworld.  Kevin Costner did a good job and the idea of dirt being more coveted than gold was interesting.
I like Waterworld and even have the DVD ... yep should have put it on my list.
I like WATERWORLD despite all the complaints, I think it works if it isn't stunning... So quote CHEEZEWIZ and me from July.  It's an entertaining movie.

Starship Troopers.  This is one of my faves.  But I love Verhoeven's movies anyway.
I think STARSHIP TROOPERS is way underrated, and you get karma for that one even at this late date of my own thread... !      I don't think everybody gets that film.

Escape From New York/LA.  John Carpenter is a favourite in our house and these two were pure escapist nonsense.
I don't know about "nonsense," but who could argue?

"House of Dracula"  -It's considered by many to be the low point of the classic Universal horror era.  I love this movie and all of its over-the-top monster madness.  With Dracula, the Wolf Man, Frankenstein's monster, A Jekyll/Hyde type mad scientist, and a hunchback all in the same movie how can you go wrong?  ...This one is always a lot of fun to watch and is probably my second favorite Universal horror flick just below "Bride of Frankenstein."
You're givin' me cavities 'cause I gotta sweet tooth for this stuff... love HOUSE OF DRACULA, and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN is one of my top 10 favorite films...
