Title: Shockwave (2006)
Post by: Andrew on July 09, 2007, 03:18:12 PM
No, not the underwater Nazi zombies film.  This one was shown on cable, I believe Sci-Fi, as "AI Assault."  The missing "S" in the title is a big difference.

Some scientists create a pair of highly intelligent robots.  The robots, which have bodies shaped something like an elongated scallop (but no ridges) and several tentacle arms, are intended to replace humans on the front lines in warfare.  Unfortunately, the plane carrying the robots crashes on an island in the Pacific.  A Special Forces team, with the head scientist's daughter along as an advisor, goes in to recover the robots.  Also on the island are three criminals who robbed a cruise ship and the ex-military helicopter pilot who was hired by the criminals (the helicopter was forced to land on the island due to a massive tropical storm).

The robots are immune to anything smaller than a 5,000 pound bomb so the Special Forces guys have single laser cannon with them that can cut through a robot's main shell.  Unfortunately, the laser cannon and the unit's radio are lost in the first encounter with the robots.  Yes, they had one weapon capable of hurting a robot and one radio.  After that, the scientist's daughter tells them that shooting a 2" solar cell on the robots will cause them to explode.  Guess who is the hero and manages to hit the spot?  If you said the ex-military helicopter pilot, you get a cookie.

By the time the first robot is destroyed, most of the cast has been killed.  The robots have a lot of weapons at their disposal:  disintegration ray, microwave beam, machineguns, claws, a harpoon, and even boomerang circular saw blades.  So, destroying the last robot takes a plan and a lightning storm...

Oh, and if the last robot is not destroyed, an F-14 is going to drop a nuclear bomb on the island.

It is often hard for me to enjoy films that use a military team or person, then completely half-ass the facts.  The DVD cover says that the Special Forces guys are SEALs, but they have ranks of Major and Sergeant, plus I am certain one has an Army device on his collar.  They also use a CH-46 helicopter to reach the island, are apparently assigned to an aircraft carrier, and use standard M16s.  Not to mention that they exhibit the military prowess of a cub scout.  Most of the time, the Special Forces guys stand and shoot at the robot until it gets close enough to kill them.

Mistakes abound.  The rear sights appear and disappear from the M16s.  Oh, and how many shots do you think a 9mm pistol can fire before reloading?  15?  100?  Even better, how about the fact that an M9 service pistol never requires reloading, has no recoil, and the hammer does not move when the weapon fires?  Arrrgggggghhhhh!  I just about popped a blood vessel in my brain.

I bought this DVD and posted some comments about it a few months ago.  The opening scene with the guy firing his pistol out of the jeep, as you mention, about 100 times without reloading is hilarious.  As dumb as this movie is, I was never bored watching it.

Yeah we had a thread about this winer (one 'n') a while back ... it's was a true work of art (snicker) large boulders that moved with the slightest touch, gun that never ran out of bul-wets and paved paths through the the jungle of the deserted island. There were endless military mistakes and errors, I just gave up counting them and called it an even million.

I wrote a review of it. If you thoroughly search the Reviews forum, I'm sure you'll be able to find it. I gave it a 3 out of 5.

You liked this one a lot more than I did.  It drove me to drink with all of the dumb problems.

Yeah, in retrospect, it really wasn't that good. It was filled to the brim with plot holes and random acts of stupidity and such. Really its just another one of my guilty pleasures.
