Title: Actor Charles Lane passes away at 102
Post by: Menard on July 10, 2007, 08:57:34 PM
Although not eminently recognizable in his latter years, Charles Lane has been a staple of the entertainment industry for as long as most of us can remember. Heck at 102, probably longer than any of us can remember.

Trying to choose a favorite role is near impossible; he had so many. IMDB credits him with 322 roles he played, and I believe the number to be higher. He was just always great in whatever role he was playing. Often a cantankerous old man, but just his presence, no matter how bad anything else was in the movie or show, would always inject something into it; and he was such a familiar face that we knew we were going to enjoy it.

So many roles are flashing through my head as I think of what part of his body of work I have seen...this could take a while...dang that's a lot of roles.

Rest in peace Charles, and thank you for the spirit and entertainment you always brough to the screen, big or small.

Gosh RIP Mr Lane

Man I saw his first movie "Smart Money" (1931) a few months ago, I looked it up on IMDB and saw him listed as Hotel desk clerk (uncredited) he was 26 then and looked like a cranky curmudgeon at that young age. He had that squinty look about him even then, that made you say "I know that guy." I don't know how many of his movies I've seen but it has got to be at least 100 or more. Mainly caught him on old sitcoms like on Petticoat Junction he played Homer Bedloe.  What a guy, what a character.

Now I'll have to get a few old tribute movies to watch.

I think ...
You Can't Take It with You (1938)
Pardon My Sarong (1942)
Here Comes the Groom (1951)
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966)
Movie Movie (1978)
Vanishing America (1986)

Really doesn't have anything from the 90's or 2000's

Charles Lane's part in YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU is small, but you won't miss that voice and those glasses!  He had a good long life.  Goodnight, Mr. Lane.

RIP, Mr. Lane.  It is probably impossible not to have seen him in something -- unless you live in a cave with no tv & don't go to the movies.

Yep, I'm got the DVD, I think most of his roles are small, but agreed you can't miss him.

I posted this at another site, but, as I still have the information in front of me, I'll post it here, too. Before he died, he was the oldest surviving member of the cast of "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." Still surviving among the credited cast members are . . .

Sid Caesar
Mickey Rooney
Jonathan Winters
Edie Adams
Dorothy Provine
Barrie Chase
Peter Falk
Stan Freberg
Marvin Kaplan
Carl Reiner
and Arnold Stang

Surviving among the uncredited actors, who had bit parts in the film are . . .

John Clarke
Nicholas Georgiade
and Jerry Lewis.
